OhCanada-ParticipantThe Sacramento Kings are one of the most talented "young" teams in the league today, and with another Top 5 Pick in the 2011 Draft they look close to threatning breaking the threshold and becomingg a "Memphis Grizzlies", "Golden State Warriors " type team that would be a 6th or 7th seed in the East, but gets held down in a tougher Western Conference. They have some issues that are extremely detrimental to their success in a difficult western conference.
-True established leadership on and off the the court.
-A real floor general at PG to direct the team.
-A defensive minded wing to stop other teams scorers.
We tend to forget Evans is only 21 years old, his stats and on court persona can be very deceptive. Sometimes it may seem like even he tends to believe hes some bigshot veteran superstar in this league, but at this point he isnt really anyone. Evans has a long way to go with his game just like Cousins, these 2 young players have to mature together and learn to harness their skills and grow as players to win. Things like Evans having 17 assists and 15 turnovers in the past 3 games really need to come to an end, he is better then that and I think this is not a talent issue, or intelligents issue, I think it relies fully on focus. Sacramento needs a new Head Coach who will push these young players to want wins, a true leader of this team, because if DeMarcus Cousins feels he has to challenge the team and be the leader, there obviously is noone there doing that job.
What would you do if you wer ein charge at Sacramento.
I would do something like this…
-Fire Paul Westphal and hire Mike Brown a hardworking defensive coach who may not be a great offensive playcaller but can definitely put this team in a position to win with a great team concept adapted and getting the best out of his players with hardwork and focus.
-Attempt to find buyers for Jason Thompson and Donte Green and look for a suitable wing position player that can be a defensive stopper along the likes of Ron Artest, Thabo Sefelosha, etc. There are only a handful of players like that in the league, but they should search and get the best defender they can find.
-Draft Kyrie Irving and shift Tyreke Evans to the SG position. Tyreke will have to put an extreme amount of work in to improve his jumpshot if this is going to work. Hopefully Irving can bring a sense of balance to the team, and he seems like a good leader to bring them through rough times.
Although I have watched alot of Kings games I would like to hear the perspective from a true Kings fan. I would have to say my favourite 3 teams other then the Raptors are the Warriors, Kings and Thunder.

BKKnicksfanParticipantI think they just go Kyrie Irving or trade for Mo Williams to hold down the position and wait till next season and add a Euro PF next to Cousins

OhCanada-ParticipantLol so they can get Rivers? They dont need to go get more picks they need to start winning because they have the necassary talent. Everyone needs to buy into the plan, Cousins would be one scary dude to go up against on a winning team with 4 players on the court that trust him and that he trusts.

llperezwas in sacramento a month ago, and the maloofs were on the radio and they said they have the most money to spend this next summer in the nba and they have every intention of spending all of it and trying to get the best players they can get to win now. This is a bit of a change from their rebuilding/money saving ways of the last few years. Just throwing that out there.

HitsterParticipantI’d agree that a PG or an SF or even an SF/PF are their biggest needs this summer. Irving would be a perfect PG who could develop around Udrich allowing Evans to play at SG and thus spread the floor. Perry Jones could also be a good pick up for them as he seems to be a very good sort of complimentary player who could help the team become better as a whole whilst not being the team’s superstar.

OhCanada-ParticipantAnd whyb wouldnt they pay out LL, they have cash they have 2 great young talents soon to be 3. What if they just offer Brooks and Gasol huge contracts and sign like Hitster stated a Perry Jones, Terrence Jones, or Harrison barnes type 3. Thats an extremely dangerous team in the works even starting to remind me of a poor mans Kobe and Shaq with Evans and Cousins, not because they are as good as Kobe and shaq more in the sense that Kobe always thought he was better then Shaq. I wonder if the 2 co-existing is going to possible because it is apparent that Cousins will settle for nothing less then being the alpha male.

HitsterParticipantCousins seemed to work fairly well on what was John Wall’s Kentucky team last year. They have loads of cap space but would probably have to pay over the odds to try and get the very top talent. I could see them maybe making a move for someone like David West if he opted out or Aaron Brooks as OhCanada said. Also his point that Harrison Barnes would be a nice fit there I fully agree with.

RICO 1981ParticipantI know i’m going to get killed for this comment, but I don’t evans can be as effective at the two guard. He seems to need the ball a lot, maybe kyrie could give him the enough to be happy. I guess it could happen, but i never really seen evans without the ball in highschool, college and the NBA. remember when coach cal moved him off the ball, he didn’t do as well.

OhCanada-ParticipantI dont think he is as effective as people think he is at the one. I mean 17 assists and 15 turnovers his last 3 games, and this is with Cousins playign like an absolute beast so its not like Evans is forced to do it all. Sacramento doesnt win games, Evans needs to expand his range. I also think he will not be so succsessful at the SG position but thats just because people have such high expectations. You know your talents are being overused when you have stats like his at 3.2 turnovers per game.

boffacheeriosParticipantyou guys all forget that tyreke currently isn’t a 1 or 2. he takes the ball up and initiates the plays most of the time, but he is absolutely not playing point guard. He needs the ball in his hands because pretty much the only things he’s exceptional at are ball handling and driving/finishing.
The best option next to tyreke would be another combo guard with the exact opposite skills to him. Reke can guard 1’s so this new guy doesn’t need to be a stellar athlete. He needs to be a GREAT shooter and a willing passer, and have the ability to handle the ball. A player like irving would be pointless because you basically eliminate evan’s strength by taking a classic point guard. who do i propose? i’ve been contemplating this for a while, but i can’t think of a better match than jimmer fredette. shooter: check. willing passer: check. ability to handle the ball: check. plus the most important thing: this team has character issues, and does there exist a player with better character than jimmer? it just seems like a great fit, but let me know what you guys think. as someone who watches every king’s game i feel like i can pick out weaknesses pretty well.

BasketBalAllanParticipantllperez is correct. The Maloofs have publicly stated that they see this coming summer as almost the same as when they put together the main core of the great Kings team of the early 2000’s. They have young talent, some desirable trade assets, a top ten draft pick, and a ton of cap space to use. I think they will be looking to keep the main young core together, while adding as much leadership and talent around them as possible.
Since you asked for a Kings fans view on what they should do, I would say this.
Players to hold on to: Tyreke, Cousins, Casspi.
Players that might be traded but could stay: Beno, Garcia, Thompson, Whiteside, Pooh, Darnell Jackson.
Players to be traded: Landry, Greene, Luther Head, Taylor.
Players to be resigned: If possible, the Kings should renounce Dalembert’s bird rights and try to sign him for a midlevel contract. He is an incredible help on defense and plays very well off of Tyreke.
As far as whom I feel the Kings should draft, I do not think they need another young PG. I think drafting at either PF or SF would be best and trying to use trade assets and cap space to acquire Mo Williams would be what would work best for the Kings.

OhCanada-ParticipantMo Williams is a horrible defensive PG, that wold just set your franchise up for losing records in the western conference imo.

BasketBalAllanParticipantThat was a typing error, what was meant to be there was "someone like Mo Williams", meaning an established PG in the NBA who is less of a star, but can bring some leadership and shooting to the equation, obviously someone who is not a defensive liability is preferable.
