I’ll concede that if anyone is stupid enough to trade away 5 & 10 to move up a few spots, it’s the Kings. But if maybe, just maybe, they’re starting to figure this out. Right now, it’s looking like a 30/70 proposition at best that a PG would be there at 10 if they went SF at 5. So what might they do to improve their position that doesn’t involve giving up the bank?

Option 1: Trade picks 5, 34 and Langston Galloway to Lakers for Pick 2 and Luol Deng. Sac gets pick of whoever Celtics don’t take and Lakers can still draft a stud player, while getting out from under that horrific contract…which Sac can easily absorb and wait out given their competitive window. The Lakers have to be viewing a shorter time-horizon given their ability to potentially attract free agents.

Option 2: Take BPA at pick 5…probably Tatum, who fills a hole as big as the one at PG. If Smith or Frank N. don’t make it to pick 10, ring up Portland about trading back for a couple of their first-rounders. The fit would be way better in terms of what each team needs. There should be a really good stretch-4 for the Blazers and the Kings can add some backcourt and wing depth with the two picks.

Option 3: Take BPA at 5 and trade pick 10 for a 2019 first rounder with some sort of protection to compensate for the pick they gift-wrapped to the 76ers in that draft. This can be done even if option 1 is taken.

    Thoughts?

I think option 1 makes sense for the Lakers financially but I don’t think they would make that move. Magic needs to make a splash and he knows it. Option 2 I think the top 10 pick is more value able then two late first rounders but that’s just my opinion. I think at 10 even if you reach a little it’s better then picking later. Option 3 I think is the most logical. I think WCS is a special player he just needs a few more years. Not saying he will ever be a scoring threat but think he could be like D Jordan in the near future. So getting a pick in 2019 makes sense. Do you think the sixers would take the 10 for there 2019 pick back?? I might do it if they would. Wonder your thoughts.

I think if Monk is still on the board at 10, the Kings should definitely ring up the Sixers about getting back that 2019 pick and make them say no to a valuable bird in the hand now vs. who-knows-what in two years.

Portland probably makes the most sense as a trade partner though. The Kings could ship them the 10th pick and take on Turner’s contract no problem in exchange for Affolo (who the Blazers cut for cap relief) and some combination of picks in this year’s draft and/or future picks.

I don’t think there’s any need to give Portland the 10 pick in this scenario, unless you’ looking to grab all 3 of their firsts. If you take Turner or Crabbe (I like Crabbe as a better fit) Portland will probably hand over the 20 pick (maybe even 15) and take Afflalo off their hands. Taking one of those contracts takes Portland from 11 mil over the cap to 6 or 7 mil under.

If I’m Sacramento I would take Smith Jr. with the fifth pick. His talent and ceiling are comperable to the 3 guards ahead of him, and you don’t have to gamble on a point being there at 10. At 10 you take the BPA, even if it’s a big. If you aren’t going to compete right away go for talent at any position. I do think a trade with Portland could be possible but it would probably be taking one of portland big , young contracts and a first for a second or Afflalo, who Portland could cut. Although Crabbe is overplayed, he could be an solid starting wing for the kings, and you add the 15 or 20 pick.

There is zero chance Lakers do that deal. The Kings have reported to have been in love with Fox and may consider trading both lottery picks to move up to get him. That would be a giant mistake. I think the top11 has some especially intersting players. Fox may be there at 5 but even if he is not it still makes sense to keep the picks. I like Fox, but not much as other people. If you can anag Tatum, Fox, or Isaac at 5 and grab Smith ( a lot of teams will regret passing on him), French Frank, or Lauri at 10 that would be a good score. Surprisingly Skal didn’t stiff it up like a lot thought. If Hield can be solid and you hit on 1 or both of the lottery picks that is a very good start to the rebuild.

I don’t know that LA needs the #5 and #10 pick from Sacramento. They need, but I’m not sure they can get, Willy Cauley-Stein. It struck me that Sacramento has Koufos and Papagianis at center and by the time Koufos leaves, Skal Labisierre will ready for center.

I’m not sure if LA quite needs to give up the #2 pick for him, but D’Angelo Russell could be enough. In that case, the Kings could be free to take Tatum and Jonathan Isaac or something like that. The Lakers could surround Lonzo Ball with shooters and guys to throw lobs to: Larry Nance, WCS. They’d have to draft shooters at PF (like Kyle Kuzma) and SG.

Agree that L.A. probably won’t trade out of the 2nd spot even if the deal makes a ton of sense. At this point, they’re almost forced to take Ball unless they absolutely love someone else and are willing to risk the backlash and him coming back to haunt them down the road.

I’m down with Dennis Smith if the Kings like him over Tatum. Bring them both in and see what you think…and see which one actually wants to be there. I think that’s why they fell in love with Fox so much – they’re so used to no one wanting to come there that right now they’re kinda like a really unattractive girl/guy swooning over the really attractive and interesting person who showed a little interest.

If they keep the picks they should either go with Smith Jr or Isaac. If they get Isaac then there might not be a point guard there at 10 — so they should look at Mason at 34.

If they get Smith then they are set at point guard and in the backcourt. At 10, the best guys on the board will probably be big men (Collins or Markannen).  Maybe OG Anunoby is a possibility as a full time small forward or you reach for Justin Jackson.

I think I would roll the dice and take Isaac at 5, Markannen at 10, then Mason at 34.

Smith Jr, Markannen/Collins/Jackson/Anunoby, and Bell/Motley would be great picks too.

Fox is not falling to 5 , Fox is there top prospect . They are going to try to trade up. They are not getting 3 for 5 & a player either it would have to be 5 & 10.

If they fail to do that and keep the 5th and 10th I think they will be tempted to take Smith at 5 and bpa at 10. But If Tatum is there they also will likely take him and hope for Ntilkina to be there at 10 but if he isn’t the are sol. And will then try to to trade 10th for 2 of Portlands picks (portland only does this if Markkanen is still on the board) then sac can justify Juan Evans with one of the aquired portland picks later in the 1st and also can grab a defends 1-4 multitool like Bell or Ojeleye.

     Option 2 seems very bad.

The Kings absolutely needs to take a PG at 5. It’s way more likely Tatum falls to 10 than Ntilikina or Smith given who selects after 5. It’s probably 50/50 with Orlando, then Minnesota, New York, Dallas would take someone else because he just does not fit at all. It’s very possible Tatum gets selected at 4 to the Suns but you already dismissed that scenario.
