thoughts on this guy, does he help or hurt the team. He took 18 shots tonight in the loss to the Spurs and only scored 18. Randolph and Gasol combined only got 14 shots. Is it just me or is this team better when they bang the ball in the paint?

Better with him. He plays in the flow of the game, he isn’t a ball stopper. He is an extremely skilled offensive player and took 18 shots. There are plenty of shots to go around.

He plays within the flow of the game and isn’t a ball stopper??? What are you watching…

He took 18 shots and got 19 points… That’s awful. IF Gay takes 18 shots and Randolph AND Gasol together only 14, that’s a problem.

Gay needs to BUY IN, not think he’s the superstar. He’s not the best player on that team.

On a team that wins…Gay is a 2nd option player at best.  Gay is a talented offensive player but not THAT good.  He HAS to play in the flow of the game, and on the Grizz team, that means he needs to be more efficient and defer to the #1 option….Randolph.

None of you guys even watched the game so y’all really have no idea what you are talking about. Randolph was shooting terrible tonight and just did not have it so Gay had to take the shots. Randolph did not even play that much.

8-18 is awful. That’s 1 shot from 50% from the floor, and it’s 44%. There have been worse shooting games.

Also, I heard the Spurs played Randolph tough after how he killed them in the playoffs and he was pretty ineffective. I do think Gasol should’ve seen the ball more, but the Spurs really were trying to take the Grizz frontline out of the game.

I didnt see the game, but I saw the box and 3-8 for Randolph is not bad shooting as far as I am concerned unless he gets the proper amount of touches.  8 attempts is not enough for the guy that carried them in the playoffs.  Gasol was 5-6…so whats the excuse for his lack of touches?  The point is that Gay isnt Kobe or Lebron, so he should at least should buy in to what made their playoff run so successful.

You can say what you want, but I’ll bet they dont win many games if Gay gets that many more shots than the bigs.  Did they win tonight?  The main reason is because they turned the ball over 25 times.  The underlying story of that is, not enough interior play and likely too much one on one shot creation.  The better you post play and half court sets…the less turnovers.  Shooting % may suck but the chance of giving up easy buckets in transition decreases.

It’s just one game. Rudy Gay is such a beast, ask the Lakers if they want him right now

If you saw one of Lebron’s awful NBA Finals games, would you be dying to have him?

I think people need to cut Gay a little slack, he hasn’t played basketball in a long time due to the lockout and his injury, so he’ll take a bit of time to find his rhythm. Admittedly he took too many shots, but it isn’t surprising if San Antonio were gameplanning for the Memphis big men and took them out of the game.

Give him a month or so to find his groove before you judge him too harshly, I still believe in him.

If Lebron’s 26ppg, 7rpg, and 7apg is what got me there in the first place, hell yeah I would be dying to have him.  we are not talking about Lebron being awful in the FINALS because with NO LBJ, the Heat dont get that far, they probably wouldnt have gotten past the Sixers….but fact is the Grizzlies almost got to the Finals without Rudy.  so thats two totally different things.

If they want to be a threat in the West, Rudy has to fit in around the team, not the other way around, because he has yet to prove he could lead them to that level.

I am not judging him harshly and he is a wonderful player, but he is not an elite player yet…how can you guys talk so much smack about Westbrook jacking up shots when his team is winning?  Even when KD was injured the Thunder kept winning.   Take away Russ, and see how far the Thunder get.  Take away Rudy…well, we went over that already….he needs to fit in, point blank, the team doesnt belong to him.

Indiana, what were you watching? Gay is by far the best player on the team and their ONLY wing scorer, outside of Mayo who comes off the bench. I wouldn’t say a guy that is the best wing scorer taking 18 shots isn’t a team player. Thats absurd. Because if I remember right Gasol and Randolph weren’t the one’s hitting the gamewinners early in the season last year, it was Gay! period.

Man, all this for 18 shots. Come watch the Melo on the Knicks and watch a guy take some shots. Really this is just one game. Fitting in is nice and all, but that team also wants Gay to continue to develop until he is consistently viewed as one of the best SF in the game. 15 to 20 shots a game seems about right.

But I didn’t catch that game, so maybe it looks like their bigs were being frozen out by the guards. I’m guessing it was more the result of double teams and packed defenses, but as I said, I didn’t see the game.

Yeah, 8-18 isn’t that bad.  He was 1-1 from 3 point range, but he did only manage to get to the line 3 times.

If we’re gonna talk about shooting it’s the Grizzlies 11-19 as a team shooting free throws.  You’re not going to win many NBA games shooting 57% from the stripe.

Rudy Gay is NOT better than Zach Randolph.

The Grizzlies went deep into the playoffs last season without Gay by playing inside out basketball. Gay needs to buy in.

I don’t have a problem with him attempting 18 shots. He only scored 19 on those 18 shots though and there’s no way he should be attempting more than Randolph and Gasol combined. That needs to change.

This is a contending level team if they play inside out… If they don’t, then they’re not… It’s that simple.

How is it his fault they didn’t get the ball more. He accounted for 18 out of 75 shots. Thats still 57 shots between everyone else. Maybe Jeremy Pargo and Dante Cunningham shouldn’t shoot as many times as Gasol. Or Conley more than Randolph.

I’m not necesarily "blaming" Gay. The team needs to do a better job getting the ball inside. I’m sure Hollins will address it.

It’s not a good look when Randolph and Gasol combined get only 14 shots.

But like someone said above, it’s only one game.

That he shot a respectable percentage and only scored 18 points merely means he needs to work to get to the line.  And did anyone expect Memphis to beat San Antonio who now have a chip on their shoulder from being eliminated by them?  Same basic concept as the Heat crushing Dallas and that is – of course they did!

You guys are twisting up what me and Indiana are saying.  I have no problem with him taking 18 shots either, but to think the team will be successful when their bigs arent getting the activity is dillusional.  All we are saying is, Gay can take all the shots he wants as long as it falls into the team structure that makes them successful.  One game doesnt matter, but if they do that in the playoffs, it wont work, this is something they have to correct.  We are not even blaming Gay, but they wont find themselves in the same position as last year if they dont play Inside/Out basketball….thats what wins for the Grizzlies.

Randolph and Gasol dominated tonight and got their touches against Houston.  With good PG play from Pargo and Selby, it was an easy win for them.  When the 2 bigs are clicking, they should not be taken lightly.
