I couldn’t help but notice from the previous Rubio thread, how some people here are still hating on his defense, with some even going as far as regarding him, as being “average or terrible” at it. I’m no expert, but if the game was anything to go by, he was anything but (terrible). Aside from the 2 plays were he went “Rondo-like” and gambled for a steal against Curry and Rose (which resulted to him being blown by), i thought his overall defense was solid, if unspectacular. He constantly stayed with his man (Rose, Westbrook etc.) and despite their physical strength and flashy ballhandling, they just couldn’t get past him, even tipping their ball away at times and making them slip in the process. Simply put, he was a pest out there. Granted, it was an exhibition and a different brand of bball, i still think he showed that aside from being already the best passer out of all the point guards there (at 19), he can more than hold his own, if not better, when playing D against high level NBA points by the time he arrives. Really, his only concern on D atm is probably when he’s caught on the break, against those uber-athletic and strong guards (Dragic-like…yikes), or manning them in the post.

100% agree. Also, let’s just say this.

Name the top 20 players in the NBA and tell me out of all of them how many of them play elite level defense

Name the top 10 PG’s today and tell me how many of them can play above average defense.

Defense is big in the NBA but let’s not overrate it.

lets remember this isnt the NBA its fiba..arroyo and mills looked good on offense and defense in fiba. with that said his defense isnt terrible and to be honest its not half bad. he clearly cant check rose, rondo, westbrook, etc in a nba game where the offense is run through them of course but he’s no steve nash on defense. i think people also have to take into account he didnt have to chase rose, westbrook, for 32plus min a game(i expect he will play that many min in the NBA) so he could come in and go all out on offense and defense since he knew he was gonna play less min. i must say he has improved since the Olympics though which is a very good sign

His defense is no worse then derrick rose as far as fiba basketball is concerned. not to be confused with the nba and the nba minutes he will get on top of a bunch of iso’s

His playmaking more than makes up for his questionable defense. Nash has shown that you dont have to be a very good defender to dominate a game. And plus Rubio is better at D than Nash with the same kind of vision and playmaking potential

Doesn’t FIBA allow hand checking? If so it makes sense that his defense was pretty good given how long of a PG he is.
Not saying he is a bad defender otherwise, just was wondering.

You’re going to compare Nash, a 2 time MVP and one of the best point guards of this decade.. to a guy that’s afraid to come to the NBA? CMON MAN!

Who is he going to stop in a one on one situation? He will get isolated just like Nash does right now.

He’s not afraid…he doesn’t wanna play in Minnesota.

I thought the NBA was 5 on 5

Come on man thats what the NBA is iso situations. Pick and roll and iso’s. He wont be able to stay infront of Rose,Wall or Westbrook. Answer me this if Rubio comes over here and plays in the west conference will he make an all-star team over Westbrook, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Steve Nash?

Not in his rookie season but I wouldn’t be surprised if he did. The All Star Game is a popularity contest. If he dazzles fans, he will get the vote of the US and Spanish fans.

Haven’t seen enough to make a opinion either way. Fiba defensive baskeball consist of a lot of gambling and handchecking. I personally dont understand all the hype but eventually when he is 28 or whenever he decides to come the the NBA I will see if he has the goods.

Mr.Knick, it would be great for players to choose what team they play on when drafted.

    LeBron went to Cleveland.
    Blake Griffin went the LAC.

Whatever happened to “I just wanna be in the league”

So now he has the right to select what team can draft him?

I’d be afraid to play for the Twolves too.
5 years would be a long time to wait to be free from them.
Smart move holding out he can reenter the draft in a couple of years?
More likely though the Twolves will trade him.

“[Rubio is] an amazing defender, that’s one thing that stood out to me is how well he pressured the ball and disrupted our offense.”
    – Kevin Durant

“[Rubio has] gotten bigger and he plays outstanding defense.”
