You’d sort of think, given last year’s difficulties, not to mention the always-on nature of the North Carolina basketball fan base, that UNC coach Roy Williams would be used to this sort of thing by now. It’s like clockwork (and not just at UNC; plenty of fan bases do this): If the team has a bad game, people call in to the coach’s radio show to complain. If it plays well, there are fewer complaints. If you win a national title, every call is "WOOOOO GRAHHHH CHAMPS RAHHHHHH" with the sound of car fires crackling in the background.

These are college basketball fans. Especially in North Carolina.

So, yeah, you’d think Roy would be used to a little radio-show grilling. Whether he is or not, he apparently doesn’t like it very much. Responding to callers that flooded the airwaves with negative questions after UNC’s ugly loss to Georgia Tech this weekend, Williams told fans to "keep their [darn] phone calls" to themselves:

"I’m really proud of those kids,’’ Williams said during his postgame media session on Tuesday. “Everybody talked about how poorly they played at Georgia Tech. My radio call [show] last night stunk; everybody was talking about how they were Carolina fans for 9 million years and how bad we are; I don’t give a [darn] how long you’re a Carolina fans, those are kids in the locker room, and they played their buns off tonight.

"I can remember working for Coach [Dean] Smith, and we go down to Clemson, and we got beat 93-76, and I thought the world was going to end. … But I didn’t have anybody calling up the TV show, talking about my team. Don’t call me next week and say how good we are; keep your [darn] phone calls to yourself.”

After a later question, Williams added: “… And I apologize, talking to you [media about this], but my God, these are 18-, 19-, 20-year olds. Did any of you call my call in show? Then I apologize; I should tell them that. I thought I showed great restraint last night.”

In other words: If you don’t have something nice to say … take it to the message boards?

I guess those fans are not used to losing so much. After all of those championships and great teams, loosing tastes kind of sour. I don’t like it either but I don’t go complaining to the coach right afterwards. As long as they play hard I’m okay, and it sounds like from Coach Roy Williams that they did play hard.

That swhat fans do stupid. You would think someone who is a coach would understand that fans talk about coaches and fans. As long as he has been a coach does he honestly think that fans arent goin to speak out? get real! Especially when you are at a prestigious winning school like norht carolina. But seriously if he doesnt get them back to their winning ways i dont see any reason why they will not let him goin 2 or 3 yrs

Man, UNC has always been my team, but as of late, Roy Williams has become a bit of an embarrassment when he doesn’t have a team stacked top to bottom with NBA prospects. This team he has now has legit talent, but Ro even seems to be trying his hardest to make them underachieve.

It isn’t the fact he isn’t winning national titles…but unc is a school that should be in the dance every year when your coach is in place and recruiting who he wants. I don’t put to much on mcdonalds all americans because some people obviously make it because of there college choice. roy needs to shut up because whether he likes it or not he is gonna be measured by how he matches up against duke and well quiet honestly he doesnt…yeah yeah two titles in five years but atleast duke stayed competitive every year they didn’t win. I’m a UNC fan and it’s not that im not satisfied…just get in the dance. I also heard that durant tried to commit to unc with lawson and roy said they only wanted ty…wth…Yeah he is one in done but how many full seasons did william graves give unc??? 1…so u tell me…why would u say no to durant…I don’t like Roy Williams one bit but all everybody wants him to do is not sub 5 in 5 out all the time. We don’t want him overcoaching down the stretch (pick the best lineup and stick with it, not subbing like crazy with 1:39 left in the game). Drew was the pg that took unc to the NIT so why not start marshall from day one? That’s just me…i understand fans who still support him but i think he overthinks the game…i could go on and on about why i don’t like him
