Lotto StudParticipantBy the time Rondo finishes his career do you think he can pass John Stockton, as the leader in assist?

RUDEBOY_ParticipantHe might pass Stockton..But then he’s going to have a hard time catching Kidd & Nash ..It seems like those guys will be playing another 10 years….

llperezstockton:15,806
kidd:11,109
nash: 8, 600
Stockton is safe from kidd and nash. If Kidd averaged 10 apg and played all 82 games, he would need to play this year and then 4 more years. I cant see him keeping that pace even if he did play another 4 years. Nash isnt even in the discussion. As for rondo, time will tell, but its gona take some incredible health.

SwatLakeCityParticipantHe can average 14 assists for an entire season, but as far as beat Stockton in total assists. No way. That number is just insurmountable. He would have to have amazing health (play all 82 games and play at the top of his game in every single one) John Stockton’s record is just impossible to reach because it is very high especially now a days with so many injuries and health issues.

creepingdefParticipantUhh Rudeboy, Stockton is the league leader in assists with 15,806.
I don’t think Rondo will pass Stockton, Stockton played til he was 40, and in his final year he was averaging around 8 assists per game which is pretty good. I could see him passing Kidd at number 2, but he’s gotta stick around well into his mid 30s to get up there.
It’s all about consistency and longevity.

RUDEBOY_Participantdang..i know that stockton is the leader..i was joking about kidd and nash..even though they’re in their late 30’s..they dont seem to be ready to retire soon…

llperezthe assists might be broken one day. But i was just doing the math, and if a player played all 82 games every year and averaged 10 assists per game, he would need to play 19 1/2 seasons.

ilike.panochasParticipantPeople forget that Stockton played till his 40 years old and only missed fewer than 10 games in his career. He was the Cal Ripken of basketball and basically was indestructable. For someone who wants to break his record, they basically have to play 20 seasons, average atleast 11APG and not miss no more than 10 games in their career. I consider Jason Kidd to be pretty durable and he isnt even near the record. I dont think the record will ever be broken.

PlatypusParticipantHe currently has 2,369
he needs 13437 more
he’s 24 years old
if he were to play till he was 37 he’d need almost 1000 per season
that is averaging a little over 13 per game untill he’s 37
aint gonna happen

Johnny KilroyParticipantbut as long as Rondo plays for a winner, he will get extra games every year. 10 postseason games would add around 100 assist each year- just throwing it out there

akhan786ParticipantI’m a big rondo fan- but expect is assist numbers to go down and get replaced with some more points when the big 3 retire. I doubt rondo could average more than 11 assists per game when he has to be the number one scoring option.

llperezpost season assists dont count towards career records.

Scottoant93ParticipantAs mentioned earlier without the big 3 i doubt he comes close to stockton. he is a good player but the big 3 are the ones making him look good.

Johnny KilroyParticipantI never knew that- might be a stupid question, but does that apply to all sports? (playoff stats counting toward career stats?)
0 - Posted on: Wed, 12/08/2010 - 5:38pm #454617
llperezim not sure about all-sports. But in the nba, they have seperate playoff records that are kept different from regualr season.
0 - Posted on: Wed, 12/08/2010 - 5:45pm #454631
HaleParticipantThe only sports that count playoffs as stats are collegiate. NCAA football and basketball do it, I’m sure the other NCAA sports do as well.

hiphopismylifeParticipantYeah I think we’re seeing the best of Rondo these next few years. When the Big 3 leaves things will change drastically.
Not to mention so much has to go into being the assist leader. Durability, playing with one of the greatest bigs of all time for most of his career, and being part of a great, consistent franchise with a great coach.
Finding the stability that Stockton had for, really, a solid 13 years is extremely rare.

balla619ParticipantLong way to go.
0 - Posted on: Thu, 12/09/2010 - 6:29pm #455110
OldSkoolBasketballParticipanteven if he averages 14 assist this year, few years down the road when the big three are gone those numbers will go down. I think his points per game would go up.
0 - Posted on: Thu, 12/09/2010 - 6:31pm #455112
PlatypusParticipantonly way its broken is if there is a brett favre of point guards, this is also the only way john madden would watch the nba too
0 - Posted on: Thu, 12/09/2010 - 6:35pm #455114
balla619ParticipantLong way to go, and in a few years the big 3 won’t be around.

Counting StarsParticipantStockton was a pass-first, pure point guard. I think the best points we have today are too offensively minded to get close to his record. Stockton averaged 13.1 points a game for his career. Let’s have Rondo play like he is for another 6 or 7 seasons before we even put him in a discussion about all time leaders.
