The role of coaches

What is a coaches job? What should they be looking to do when they are appointed head coach, or assistant coach? What should they bulid their philosophy around? If you were a coach what would you do?

I actually am a coach... The role of a coach in the NBA is to cater to his superstar.. The role of a coach in college is to win while developing players.. The role of a coach in HS is to turn boys into men, get them ready for the real world or college, and show them that people are rewarded for hard work...

Nah... I dont do facebook..

Nah... I dont do facebook..

I am a confident person so I think that I know more than most people out there.. I mean I have spoken with some of the greatest coaches in the NCAA and have never been lost in conversation.. I spoke with Coach K for about a hour one time a about zone defenses and what offenses were best against what defenses...

I have talked to Coach Beline about his 1-3-1 defense and how he extends it at different times in the game...

Obviously I talk to Huggins...

I think I am poised to become a great coach.. I am about to dump this HS crap as soon as I graduate and move to college...

Okay. Are you a head high

Okay. Are you a head high school coach?? I mean I bet you are or should be considering being a grad assistant. Get a masters while coaching.

How did you meet Coach K??

No.. I was an assistant head

No.. I was an assistant head coach and I coached the JV team... I was playing college ball but I destroyed my Achilles Tendon so I jumped on a team as an assistant.. I implemented most of the offenses and defenses and ran the show at practice.. The head coach just did work on game time.. I go to coaching seminars all the time.. I go to camps every summer.. I met Coach K at a coaching camp. I was playing college ball at the time and I was shooting with with Singler during the lunch break and Coach K and I got to talking then.. After the camp, they were having summer practice so I stuck around to watch and thats when we talked for so long...

I want to start at a small college and be a head coach... IDK if that will ever happen but I have talked to all the local college coaches because I am quitting playing.. When I was young, I never wanted to play in the NBA or even at the college level.. I wanted to be a coach and thats what Im going to do... I dont want to be behind anyone for long.. I realized that as an assistant, you cant change a school.. My head coach and I disagreed about some things and I knew that I knew more about ball than him but out of respect, I never questioned what he wanted to do... It was so freaking hard for me to do that.. LOL... My Dad says that I am cut out to be a head coach and not an assistant..

8th I am sorry you got hurt,

8th I am sorry you got hurt, but I respect your drive. That's cool your dad has been coaching. It takes a special breed of people to be a head coach at the college level, something I am not cut out for. I would love love to be an assistant and recruit as well as graduate kids. I have a bunch of goals relating to basketball and education. Maybe one day if I have an AAU team or something we cross paths, and I lead a recruit to you, lol.

8th, if you believe you will

8th, if you believe you will be a head coach in college you will be. Just don't give up and pay your dues. Also, do well in school b/c say you want to be a grad assistant somewhere to have good grades is never a bad thing. You say you talk to Huggins a decent amount, look at WVU and see if they have graduate programs that interest you, and be a grad assistant under him.

Thanks man.. The injury is no

Thanks man.. The injury is no big deal.. It is almost healed.. I didnt like my coach anyway.. As soon as the season was over, he told me he was pulling my scholarship...lol

Yea... I know I can do it and I think that everything happens for a reason.. I think that my injury was my first step to becoming a coach...

That'd be really cool if we did cross paths.. I would give you my name but Im not a fan of that... The day I give out my personally info is the day that I stop coming here.. When I think I am about to make it, I will tell everyone what my name is and where I am going...

I have to get my grades up and I have talked to Huggins about coaching with him but he recommends that I do it from a different level.. He doesnt like the fact that we talk. He says something about not being as hard on me as he is his assistants because we sort of have a friendship... Thats cool IMO... He can at least give me a recommendation.

Thanks for the support though!

No Problem. Are you going to

No Problem. Are you going to stay at the school you were playing at?? If you don't want to mention here that's fine. Feel free to email me at [email protected], if you don't want to that's fine. I have posted my email on here before, I don't care. That's a smart move by Huggins, he is right. Also you should be fine, just go to the right place where you will feel comfortable.

No offense but Im not gonna

No offense but Im not gonna email ya.. Nothing against you, just dont like doing that.. I dont think I am staying at that school.. I thought about transferring to WVU but I think up there I would be a small fish in a big pond.. Where I am now, I am known by the local college coaches and HS coaches.. I feel like I am going to transfer to a college that is just up the road about an hour or so and finish school.. I actually think that Im not coaching HS ball either... My education needs to be my number 1 priority right now... I am young so I can do the coaching thing once I graduate.. I mean people already know me so I think 2 years will be okay for me to not coach. I might even try out for our semi-pro team, the WV Blazers, as a practical joke.. And if I make it, I get paid like 300 bucks per game... LOL...

No offense taken. You have it

No offense taken. You have it if you ever want to. You shouldn't say you're not going to coach high school ball because you're limiting yourself, keep all of your options open. You have to pay your dues, I can tell you're driven, but you don't want to limit yourself. If you're down with the HS and College coaches where you're at now, just finish your education there, and land a job in the area as a start, and then start expanding yourself. Though if you get your grades up you can go to any top D1 graduate school and do some better things.

shame on you

If u watch sports and u dont know what the coaches' job is then u should stop watching, participating, and being a fan all together because thats a disgrace to all sports that you dont know what a coach does for his/her team

to TaylorCondrin

why do u want to be a coach at 18? and if so do u wanna coach lacrosse or basketball? if u suck at basketball why would u want to coach it? what u know obviously wont help anyone out... at 18 what u know about a sport like basketball for example is smaller then a grain of sand...(trust me im sure i know things u probably wouldnt even thought of yet in basketball)... but you get into coaching by developing a rep. either by playing like Don Nelson or Avery Johnson and maybe someone wants u to teach what u know or working ur way up at high school if ur lucky or junior high... but like i said, u have a shot if you play a sport and develop skills and niches that sets u apart from other coaches however u said ur a junkie so...

If all you want to be is a

If all you want to be is a local coach at a HS or something, its really sort of easy.. The way it works in WV is that if you are not hired by the Board of Education, you have be take a 15 hour class to become certified.. It cost about 300 dollars to take the class.. After the class, you have 3 test to take.. Once you pass, you are certified.. THEN, you have to bid on jobs... The thing is though, anyone that is hired by the board can knock you out of your position.. Say you bid on a job that nobody has bid on and a 90 year old English teacher bids too, you are knocked out... It sux...

That is for the HS level..

For MS, in WV, you can just volunteer.. You have to be certified for a head coaching position but as an assistant, you can just be a volunteer..

You dont have to be good at a sport to coach it.. You need to know fundamentals, know the game its self and not just how to play, and know how to communicate or teach what you know... The biggest advice that I can give you is never stop learning.. When you arent getting better, you are getting worse.. If you are serious about being a coach, go to clinics and coaching camps as much as you can.

Also, a great coach listens to everyone.. Even if its a retarded person, you listen but you dont have to do what you are told.. You never know who is going to give you good advice... Dont burn your bridges either...

Ummm... I am only 20 years old and I have coached 2 teams already.. I coached a middle school team when I was a senior in HS, while playing for my HS, and I was an assistant this past year.. Umm.. I can try to answer any other questions you have.. IDK how much stock you can put into my word since you really dont know me but I will, like I said, try to answer questions you have..
