If you had to pick between:

    D. Green or Griffin who would you pick as your third big?

    CP3 or Harden?

    Drummond or Cousins?

Everyone else i think is locks…

     Draymond Green..

Chris Paul (gives you a needed halfcourt option that can control the pace)

Andre Drummond over Cousins any day of the week

Green, Paul and Cousins easily for me.

Green and Paul set a tone defensively and Cousins can bang with the Gasols if you have to play Spain.

Otherwise, having a big isn’t all that important because USA can just press and trap and shut teams down. Thats the route I’d take at least…overwhelm the competition with the defense and athleticism.

It doesn’t matter, they win with any of them.

It depends on the rest of the roster, but Green because he can shoot from outside.

Paul because Harden brings some offcourt circus stuff.

Drummond, as Cousins can be a bit weird, and Drummond is a monster center.

I would want Green on my team, but as an Aussie I would love to see Griffin and Bogut go at it representing their countries if they met at any stage.

You would probably take Paul, he offfers a bit more than Harden. You can take 100 people in the NBA if you want points. If the locks here are Curry and Westbrook I would think with their histories their times would find any medical excuse to stop them going. I twouldn’t surprise if at least one didn’t go.

I think either big would be good but I would take Cousins. Think he would relish the opportunity and love winning (not that Drummond wouldn’t)

When you look at those choices for fringe players you just wonder how the team ever loses a game. Egos are a funny thing.

Drummond SHOULD be in.  Yes, he is bad at free throws, but they can have crunch time lineups with AD or Blake or Draymond at the 5 which is what I think they SHOULD do anyway.

BUT, Drummond gives them the best possible rebounder out there, a great dunker, and a guy who can block shots.

    I think he is in.

My team right now, similar to my team a few months ago:

    Starters

    PG Steph Curry

    SG James Harden

    SF Kevin Durant

    PF LeBron James

    C   Anthony Davis

    Bench

    PG Russell Westbrook

    SG Jimmy Butler

    SF Kawhi Leonard

    PF Blake Griffin

    C   Draymond Green

    Reserves

    SF Paul George

    C Andre Drummond

I think Butler gets one of those last spots over Klay.  Having a better year and has had some HUGE scoring games, plus he is better on defense.

This team only has two point guards, but lots of guys who can handle the ball and pass.

Chris Paul is my alternate.  A guy who can step in if either Steph or Russ gets hurt.

I can’t really see leaving any of these guys off the team.  Then even if you argue that someone should get in over Andre Drummond, then you would go with another big man instead of another point guard.

I would pretty much assume that LeBron would be the team’s third string point guard option.

Other than Drummond being the last guy in my other competition is Butler vs. Klay Thompson and I like Butler’s 2 way game better…

If Blake plays his way out of contention, I might consider Aldridge or Chris Bosh for that other big man spot.

Bosh is a great stretch 5.  Aldridge isn’t as good at that but he can really score, is great from mid-range and is a bit bigger and a bit better rebounder than Bosh.

Starting:  Curry, Harden, Durant, LeBron, Davis

Bench: Westbrook, Leonard, Klay, $Green, George, Drummonds, Cousins

This squad you can play international small ball and players change play different positions.

F#$& Blake…homeboy has turned down playing for Team USA too many times!  Plus he plays no defense.

The odd player out is Butler.

Hard to leave any of those guys out.

So, outside of the 12 man roster that I posted, here is my five man Rio Snub Team:

PG Chris Paul (alternate, but not a 12 man roster guy)

    SG Klay Thompson (sorry Kobe)

SF Carmelo Anthony: Men’s Olympic Basketball Team SUPERSTAR.

PF LaMarcus Aldridge: Does it all at the 4.  Can even do the same stuff at the 5.

C Chris Bosh: THE stretch five of our generation.  A matchup nightmare.  Probably LeBron’s best ideal fit for a teammate.

Alternate: Kyle Lowry.  How did he not even make the final cut?

Alternate Alternate: Paul Milsap.  Does lots of everything.  A small ball 4 who can hit the 3 and score inside.  Or, you can make him a Big 3.  Somehow didn’t make the cut either.

Ok, my NEW roster made up of guys who NEED to be on this team, also with some guys who really fit in well.

    Starters:

    PG Steph Curry

SG Klay Thompson (helps complete the Natural Born Shooter video game back court).  Don’t like Harden’s game.

SF Kevin Durant.  Ok, ok, the Natural Born Shooter Perimeter lineup.

    PF LeBron

C  Andre Drummond: Having the best season of any center in the league.  He can’t hit free throws?  So what?  He can rebound, dunk, and rebound.

    Bench:

PG Russell Westbrook: probably should start with Steph but I only have two point guards on my roster.

SG Jimmy Butler: Mister Two Way.  An intense player who just had 40 in a half a couple of weeks ago.

SF Kawhi Leonard: Probably should start.  But, won’t.  Great player who is also shooting well from the 3.

SF: Paul George.  Ok, almost left him off this roster and made him my alternate but a promise is a promise and the guy is having a better year than LaMarcus Aldridge.

C Draymond Green: Natural Born Warrior.  He can do it all on a great team.  One of the handful of guys in the league who de off the roster.  serves at least a few MVP votes.

    Reserves:

PG Chris Paul.  Ok, ok, I added a third string point guard.  Gets the nod over James Harden as the obligatory annoying, chippy, ball-hogging, Western Conference stud.

PF Anthony Davis: Just too hard to leave him off the roster.  Especially with no Blake Show this team needs a bouncy athletic big man.  AD probably the best shot blocker on the roster too.  Also, with fewer bigs on this team you need a third big that can do some of everything.  More of a 4 but will see some time at the 5.  Probably a closer on this team, with Drummond (a poor free throw shooter) being a better option to START games as a true center.

Alternate: LaMarcus Aldridge: Team is short on bigs.  So, if one goes down, you need another one as an alternate.  I even thought about picking LMA over Paul George, but PG gives you more outside shooting and more athleticism.

I really like your team, write-up, and analysis. Aside from switching Anthony Davis and Andre Drummond (starter/reserve role), I think you hit this on the head. I really agree that despite James Harden having seniority and seemingly the title of the league’s best SG, he has really struggled this year to be efficient, has not improved his D, and is not an obviously better spot-up shooter than Klay, Butler, Leornard, or George to warrant his shoddy defense over their D-shooting combination. Again, really like your analysis!

Thanks giddyup.  Well, my last lineup is more about guys who I think would FIT and there are about 3 or 4 spots that, I think, are still open.

I was thinking of starting Drummond because even if opponents DO want to send him to the foul line, they don’t want to be in foul trouble 5 minutes into the game.  So, he starts.  Then you have Draymond Green playing center for much of the game.  Then you might close games with AD.  OR, you can go with a bigger closing lineup of Steph, Russ, LeBron, Davis, and Draymond.  5 guys who can score and defend.  Steph can flat out shoot, and Russ can drive.  Davis can run the floor and block shots, while Draymond can even hit the 3.  So, they can go big down the stretch without compromising their "small ball" fundamentals.

I can see 17 or 18 guys making a LEGIT case to make the team.  Could come down to fit, and who has some GREAT practices.

Draymond is a phenomenaL player, but I think he misses the cut this year. They don’t really have a need for him. Paul George, Khawhi, Lebron, Westbrook… Those guys can defend. The toughest part of this roster will be selecting the bigs. I don’t think there are any locks except for Anthony Davis. Love and Aldridge have slim chances. The battle is between Cousins,  Drummond, BlakE, and Howard. For this team, I would probably pick Blake and Howard. Howard won gold and would’ve been on the last team if it wasn’t for injuries. Blake missed because of Injury too.
