ricky rubio will be a bust
he is really fast actually, he just luls the D to sleep so he could jet past them. bruce bowen is a good shooter i don't know what ur talking about. jaric sucks, as clips fan i kno. he does not have a left hand. its like they cut it off at birth, he refuses to use it therefore its easy to guard him. And uhh, is steve nash an amazing athlete, uhh no but he is a two time NBA MVP. Ya, if he plays bad then why did he win DPOY for his entire league which is the best in all of europe.
ive never played him before but ive watched him on a couple of occassions (i play in the second division in spain/germany,turkey) and yea he is overrated..what most people in america dont realize is that its very very very political over there alot more then here..you can get player of the year offense or defense even though youre clearly not that good of a offense or defense of player...rubio is a pretty good player butnot great as people have suggested..he has quick moves but hes not that fast of a player. pretty good instinct for his age but has trouble with athletic american players or if they have handles..the thing that gets me are the people who jump all over the band wagon after seeing him on youtube since anyone can look great if you just show there highlights..or a coupel of people that said he was great in the olympics 4pts 3ast a game...for the seaon hes averaging 9pts 5.7 ast 1.6 stls
josh huestis: nobody in the olympics has good stats. Who in the olympics averaged 20 pts a game: NOBODY! Rubio did not start until the title game. In that game he played pretty well and his stats were not wow stats but they were pretty good for the olympics. Plus, he did that at 18 years old. Brandon Jennings who should be a good nba player is putting much worse stats than Rubio yet u act like rubio's stats mean that he will be an average player. He is 2nd in the whole ACB in assists at 18 years old! How many of these young Euro players in the past coming into the NBA actually have better stats than rubio ? Not many.
actually most have better stats then rubio comming into the leauge from euro..go to eurobasket and look it up..most 99 percent of the guys average more than 9pts a game and less turnovers..one thing he has is the ast but its only by like 1 and a half or 2...so sorry to tell you his stats are lower then just about all the euros that come to the nba
You took every word I was about to say out of my mouth clippers. I don't know what half of these guys on these forums are talking about. Maybe if you said Ryan Bowen it would have been a little better post lol, and show me a video that shows he cannot play defense.
I would not say that Rubio is goin' to be a bust, but he is overhyped.
Because for the past many years, WHITE guys have been overhyped in the draft and many turned out to be less as good as expected, take a look

he is a badder shooter than bruce bowen? wow.....badder.....really? and bowen can actually shoot......
anyways, rubio won't be a franchise savior or anything, but for an 18 year old pg, he has lots of talent and bball iq, and is improving his shot.
i don't like ricky rubio, but lets be fair. If anyone can play in the league, it is the guys from spain. Look at the players they have Pau & Marc gasol, rudy fernandez, sergio rodriguez, jose calderon, juan carlos navarro, and jorge garbajosa. when you want to hate on europe, i would look at other countries not spain. And i am not saying he wont be a bust, just don't use the "he is from europe" argument. He is from spain where they had about 7 or 8 guys play in the nba effectively.
I would like to point out that none of your overhyped white/Euro guys are PG's. It just seems that more white/Euro guys are better at playing PG than anything else because it has more to do with skills rather than being strong or athletic. i.e. Steve Nash, John Stockton, Pistol Pete.
He would be a starter at 75% of the teams in NBA.
If you say that he is average deffender and slow, then you haven´t seen him playing more than a few minutes... that´s his best skill.
And he pass as the best PG in NBA.
He is not a shooter... and? what´s the problem?
Of course, he can pass as good as Paul... and as good as 99% of PG in NBA.
You can discuss if he is a better shooter, athletic... etc... but he can pass as the best...
¿Why are they thinking about picking him in top 5? He must be good in something... ¿no?
All the players from Spain has been good and Rubio is said to be one of their better players and even if he has holes in his game now you are talking about an 18 year old kid with nice size for the point guard position and great skills who is playing for the Counties national team. That says a lot right there.
I just cant see this kid being any good in the NBA. All i can picture in my head is him getting
A.) Dunked on
B.) Blown past on every possesion
C.) Not being able to finish in the lane because of his lack of strength
D.) Becoming a decent back up point guard at best
I'm not saying he's garbage. I like his basketball IQ and passing ability, but his flaws aren't very fixable. Will his game translate to the NBA?
Of all things to get on Rubio on, his defense is in question now?
Also, I can't even think of a NBA point guard who HASN'T been dunked on. Interior defense is what big men are for.
And strength... its not like guys are just physically unable to get stronger or quicker. Compare today's Tony Parker to the rookie from way back.
But whatever, I respect Josh's opinion because he at least brings up valid points every once in a while but I think a lot of people just love the Euro-Hate Train.
Why we always use age as an excuse for a player. You never know who is going to get better or who is gonna level off. I mean some players reach their prime at 18, 24, 27, 30, years old sometimes its a craphoot becasue of injury, mentality, physical build etc...
I feel like Rubio has the pose and skills and the experience to be a great point guard in the NBA. Every player has limitations. I can see him being better than Calderon who many felt should have made the all star game a year ago. There are a lot of point guards that have trouble on defense. Most of the time it is the whole team job to stop what the point is doing because they control the offense. Steve Nash defense is not good yet he was a repeat MVP. Also I have heard that Rubio actually play decent defense. I have not seen enough on him to say what and what but I have seen some highlights and part of that Olympic game and he moves pretty well. I feel like he will be better than Udrich as a rookie and Urich is a decent back up that they allowed to start.
yeah they dont average 20 but 4pts and 3 ast?????????? and 2 turnovers..come on now...and in the title game he had 6pts 3ast 3 turnovers so is that considered pretty well...if thats the case shouldnt patty mills be in this disscussion since hes also a young pg who actually played alot better then rubio and better stats
rubio is slower then the average starting point guard and his olympics wasnt that great..average at best so im not sure where this " he had a great olympics is comming from"..and rubios d ( from what ive seen this seaon from watching his actually games" is suspect against athletic american guards...so liek im telling all of yall who seem to give him all these praise from a average olympics and the youtube highlights yall should wait and watch a actually game or 5 before jumping on the bandwagon...i never give that much praise to a player who i havent watched play a couple games yet
so just because you have a bad supporting case and you play well then does that take away from how good you play?...if thats the case eric gordan doesnt belong in the disscussion as top rookies nor does oj mayo, russell westbrook and any other player on a bad team ...also with his bad supporting case mills only averaged 1 less ast then rubio
I think part of it is his race and the other part is that in America he is an unknown commodity (people are always indiffrent about unknowns) plus dont people get judged on their race/ethnicity/color???? But I believe thats another issue. As a basketball player I dont know much about him but people say the transition between European and American basketball is a big DIFFRENCE..... so I curious to see how he does. Your right Tocane you dont know how he is going to turn out but its fun to speculate on all the young players that get drafted.
He was Spains best player in the olympics as a 18 yr old and u can see how well the rest are doing in the nba!! He has been playing pg in the pro s for some years and is a great defender just ask C Paul about that!!! He is a tall pg who can pass very well and will continue to fill out physically as he gets older. Americans love to hate on players from else where, but some of the best players now are from other countries.....pg's in this nba are huge for teams just look around the league!!
I have no problem with Europen players, Kukoc, Radja, Parker and of coarse Dirk are all very good players. I am only saying that Rubio is NOWHERE near any of these guys and he is projected to be as high as # 2 in this years draft. Either he is very overated, or this years draft is very thin. I think it is a combination of both.
This dicussion is so old...ill b honest i dont kno much about this kid(like 99% of the people jus hatin for no reason) besides what i see on youtube...so to be honest its kinda hard to pass much judgement on him...i mean he has great size for the pg position( not weight tho yet) not to mention an unrealristic passin ability(picturin the lobs he'll b throwin in the league i cant wait to see) n hes only 18 people remember that... I mean yea hes skinny n doesnt look too athletic but come on nash made so he needs a fair chance too....I jus wish people would acutally kno what their talkin bout on this site its kinda sad how hatin leads to writin unknown facts...If i had to guess tho i dont think hell b a hall of famer n definelty shudnt b a top 5 pick but due to the weak draft n the hype he has thats likely gon happen
how you figured he was the best on his team at the olympics..this is based off of what?..you do know he averaged 4pts 3ast and 2 turnovers in the olympics right?.paul gave him bucketsand rubio had 6pts 3 turnovers against the U.S....so once again what olympics were u watching?
The only point guards in Europe with more talent than Rubio are Papaloukas and Spanoulis. And no I'm not Spanish, I'm Italian, so don't accuse me of being a Spanish Homer (those guys are quite notorious). Anyway, the talent is all there with Rubio. So the questions are the desire to play in NBA, which Papaloukas lacks........, but Rubio obviously has..............
and can he adjust to a new way of life, which Spanoulis could not. Sure, Rubio could be a bust, because Spanoulis has more talent and he was a bust. But if Rubio has the right mental approach he will not bust, in fact, he will maybe even have a chance to be a top 5-10 GOAT at point guard.
Spanoulis is a short guy; and he is an average shooting guard not a point guard... I think this comparison is not correct.
Papaloukas was a very good pg; he could have play in NBA when he was younger... but his game is absolutely european... he doesn´t run too much, doesn´t jump, he isn´t a very good shooter, he doesn´t dunk... They would have not understand his game in the NBA.
As I wrote this in other post, I copy it (it fits here)
I can't really see why this comparison of Rubio to Calderon. Calde is a first pass PG, ok, but he plays zero D and he has developed a jumpshot over the years, becoming quite reliable. He's slow and he has good court vision.
I'm not totally sold on Rubio (I'm spanish) but what I can tell you is that they are totally different. Rubio has great defensive awareness, plays much more loose basketball and one of his main strengths is defense and positioning. He puts under pressure the other PG with his body positioning reading where he will go and that allows him to create tons of turnovers and steals. Other than that, he is developing a jumpshot, he had only 10 days to work last summer with a shooting coach and he has improved remarkably, but he's FAR from being reliable.
I'd say he is fast enough and very long and tall to avoid defensive problems on his 2nd year and so on, but he will have to learn a bit how the D-Will and CP3 of the league do their stuff. He's a great creator, he's superb at the pick&roll but he will struggle until he improves his shot.
You can expect him to be a future Calderon (in terms of improving every year, team oriented pass first PG) but playing good defense (which can be an All Star). Rubio's main advantage is his quick improvement, he learns everything so easily that his second year will be years ahead of his first. So I can predict for him what Jose Calderon did: develop a good jumpshot and (what Calde never did) become a lock on D.
Another point worth mentioning is the discussion about the Euro statistics we see and why it look like every euro is sh*t, we should remark that in Europe assist don't count the same way as the NBA. Only if the pass is straight and the player receiving makes no dribble at all (almost catch and shoot) it counts. Actually it's not as easy as I say, but you get the point.
The NBA court is wider, Euro game is very crowded in the paint as it is smaller (remember NBA 3 point line is further than Euro line)
By the way, for those who believe BJennings is gonna be the next great thing...
Rubio Euroleague: ppg 2.4 | apg 2.8 | to 2.4 | rpg 2.4 | mpg : 13
Jennings Euroleague: ppg 7.6 | apg 1.6 | to 1.2 | rpg 1.6 | mpg: 20
Hope it helps.
i´m tired of blind people who see a kid playing and say look how fast, strong, tall or hard he is,imagine what he can be?i tell you what he can be: faster, stronger, taller or harder.but not necesarily better.
basket its more than that, people who loves this game knows that some guys are specials and just make things happen.things than the other dont even see.
ricky is one of those guys, maybe his body dont let he be a multi-year al star.but he is rigth now a better player that 99% of this year draft would "ever" be.
i,m sure he,s going to be a star in this league, maybe not this year but soon, and i,m sure too that some people are going to keep thinking he,s overrated cause it´s people that just like this game for the "in your face"dunks the fade away 3´s and the statics.if i want that i see a match of beisbol.
Ricky RUbio is not WHITE! hes hispanic. Get that correct. Have any of you guys seen how well he played during the Olympics as a starting PG for his National Team Spain. They won the silver medal and a big contribution was from the PG spot which was Ricky Rubio. He was only 17 years old then and is now only 18. HE wont be a bust but i dont think he will be bettter than some of the other PG is the draft. He shouldnt be a top 10 pick but def a 1st rounder. He has creative ball handling skills but lacks a jump shot. With his youthness most aspect of his game can be worked on at the NBA level. Therefore I can see him being better than an Jose Calderon.
Spain born people are European: Gasol, Rodriguez, Rudy...
Although we share language with south americans (you seem to call them hispanic) we usually do not look like that. Our skin is whiter, but anyway I can't understand why it is important for you. This is basketball we are talking about, and Ricky is a good prospect with great potential.
Let's see if he's top3 (because if he's not he wont come till 2010) and then we speak about him.

rubio is average he is one of the slowest point guards i have every seen he has no athleticism he's in average at best defender he is a badder shooter than bruce bowen i don't see why all yall guys have a man crush on ricky rubio at best i see him as in andre miller from philly type player in the nba at worst marko jaric for the grizzles
