Assuming the Lakers get the number one pick do you take Ben Simmons regardless of how he would fit or look next to Julius Randle. I maybe on of those rare people that think Randle & Simmons can coexist, i personally want to see them run & gun together, Randle is improving his range on his jumper which would give Simmons lot more wiggle room to create.

Well what do you all think?

I don’t think it would work. Randle is really a post player with a good handle who likes to grab defensive rebounds and bring the ball up court. This is Simmons greatest strength and allows him to facilitate and make everyone around him better. Also, with Simmons you need at least 3 shooters on the court with him to be successful. Would be best to draft Simmons then trade Randle while he still has good value for a quality 3 & D small forward. Then In free agency they should target a defensive big maybe Joakim Noah or Hassan Whiteside. 5 Trading Randle  would also free up time for Larry Nance who has shown great promise, and he can shoot better and play small ball centre with Simmons.

It’s not a question of fit at this point..You have to ensure you have the best players available, and the Lakers will do that. I will personally be really happy if we get any of the top 3 players (Simmons, Ingram, Bender). That said, if you get a no. 1 pick, you select Simmons no matter what. In my eyes, long-term, he’s a mismatch of a small forward, so it’s easy to find playing time for both of them.

Questions about fit are just so irrelevant at this point, these kids are 19 and 21 years old, respectively. Plenty of time to correct their jumper and defense. Jimmy Butler was 23 when he entered the league as an unknown player and he turned out just fine. Give them time, there’s no trading your future away.

Randle’s not good enough to worry about fit next to Simmons.  If they’re in a position to draft Simmons and he’s their guy, take him and move on from Randle or move him to the bench.  He’s probably better served going against 2nd teamers anyways.

a terrible offense.  more i watch of simmons the less I am impressed.  Especially when 6’3” guards guarding him are shutting down his game because his handle isn’t as great as I thoguht in a half court offense when players are playing 6 feet off him inviting him to shoot.  Randle’s shot is really inconsistent too.

Maybe it’d be fun watching them both crash boards as their bodies mature picking up each other’s misses and throwing it down.

But in a half court offense, no way man.

You don’t move Randle, you keep him even if you have to make them fit, if Simmons can make people that much better why get rid of Randle he’s a beast on the low block and a improving jumper

Me personally, I’d move him sooner rather than later because I simply don’t believe in his game.  He’s progressed very little since his junior year in HS.

And no, he’s not a low block beast.  He’s a face up who can only go left, lacks vertical explosion and length and can’t shoot.  He’s also poor defensively, has a low IQ and a petulant personality.

Like I said, I wouldn’t worry about fit with Simmons mainly bc I don’t believe in Randle’s upside.

It’s essentially Randle’s 1st year and he’s averaging about 10 and 10 in about 25 minutes. Sounds, at the least, a starter in the league.

On horrible efficency, bad defense with very little floor game. His offense lacks dimensions,  his game as a whole lacks nuance and for such a bull of a physical player, struggles to finish in the only area of the floor where he can score.  In terms of RPM, he ranks 93rd out of 95 PFs in the league.

I’ve followed this kid for a while and as I said in my previous post, he’s shown very little progression as a player since HS.  I like to see year to year growth from players bc I think that’s a great indicator of the likelihood they will approach their potential.  I haven’t seen that in Randle.

His numbers aren’t impressive even for a rookie, especially on a bad team in need of a PF.  I’m not sold that he’s a starter in this league. I actually like Nance Jr more now and going forward bc unlike Randle, he actually looks like he knows how to play the game, has skill, better length, better vertical explosion and has the mentality to play a role.  Players can be stars, but the overwhelming majority are role players. He doesn’t have star potential to me and I don’t think Randle has the mentality or game to be a valuable role player. I’d personally put him in the Derrick Williams category as a player. I can see his career unfolding in the same fashion.

If the Lakers get the 1st pick I would draft Simmons, because homeboy maybe able to play SF in the League. And after the Lakers fire Scott, their new coach Luke Walton will want to play “small ball” using both Randle and Simmons. But the Lakers really do need a true Center.

     ^^^

Luke Walton to the Lakers makes a lot of sense.  Especially if they get Ben Simmons to go with their other young talent.

If they get Walton, I bet they take a look at Festus Ezeli and Harrison Barnes.  If the Lakers can’t get the higher end guys like Durant or Whiteside, I think they should take a look at these two Warriors’ free agents.

I would play a similar style in LA with Clarkson and Russell in the backcourt, Barnes at the 3, Simmons at the 4 in a Draymond Green-like role, and Ezeli at center.  Nance, Jr. and Randle headline the bench.

I think they Lakers would STILL need at least one more high level franchise-type talent, but they would be headed in the right direction.

They would have a rebuild closer to Showtime (at best) or the Lake Show than the Shaq-Kobe dynamic duo.

If you get the #1 pick, you get rid of Randle, if they can’t coexist. Honestly, who would you rather on your team? Simmons or Randle? If you said Randle, then, well… you probly have something wrong with you. I was a bit skeptical with Simmons at the beginning of this basketball season, but right now, he looks like a very good #1 pick, and though he won’t be the next Lebron, he is playing at a high level, and could be a superstar. You most DEFINITELY take Simmons if get the #1 pick.

Why does everyone think if the Lakers get Simmons they must or should get rid of Randle? Who would you get for Randle there isn’t anyone his age with the upside he still has, this is truly his rookie season because of his injury so i dont think any on can say he’s not as good hes still developing, hes one of the top rebounders in his draft class, regardless on if there similar you draft Simmons and keep Randle so they can have 2 bugs that can push the ball and run the floor. The difference between the two is that Simmons is going to pass the ball more then Randle, & Randle play inside out and Simmons play out side in. Just because they both got low post game doesn’t mean they can work together & coexist on a championship level. Look at the spurs Tim Duncan and LaMarcus Aldridge & David West all do the same things and they fit well together and none of them can push the ball or can they create for themselves and others but Ben Simmons & Julius Randle can.

I wasn’t saying that, at the beginning of the post, I said, if they can’t work get rid of Randle. I think they could work, you dodn’t just need to get rid of Randle. I’m just kinda restating what everyone else said. If you have to get rid of one, you obviously get rid of Randle. Because Simmons will be a superstar. I think that Randle is good, and he’ll be good. But I think Simmons will be better.

Basketball is at the end of the day a business. If you were standing in the middle of Hong Kong and someone offered you the choice between $500US or $500HK you don’t knock back the US$ whixh are worth 10 times as much just because they don’t work. You take what’s worth more and make it work for you.
