valentineHello all, I am running into a very tough problem. I am trying to continue my basketball career and progress as a player, but I am beginning to become addicted to cigarettes. I am not to the point where it has affected my breathing yet, but I am scared that if I don’t stop soon it will. I stopped smoking this morning but now I am going crazy wanting a cigarette and I don’t know how much longer I can last. I know I have to quit and it has to be soon or it will just get harder, and I know if I don’t quit then I will have to quit basketball someday which I never want to do. Help, anyone!!! Tips please. Thank you soo much.

AfricanBallerShekiru it is not that easy. It is not like I am going to go pro or anything, but I just love the sport. I think basketball causes some of the stress because I am only 5’7 so I suffer from what some people might call "little man syndrome". I foul a lot and have a lot of problems with the bigger guys. But I want to quit the cigs and quit the fouls and try to become a great pure PG in the mold of a Bobbie Cousy or Stevie Nash.

TyroberParticipantGet some sun flower seeds. It’s what my father did. He goes through like a million of them a day, but atleast he doesn’t dip anymore

For_Never_EverParticipantTry Electric ciggarettes, I would recommend it for any smoker to try. Go to Wallmart and go to the cashier that sells all the tobacco products. The name is mystic electric Ciggarettes, cost around 15$ dollars.

ChewyParticipantSnacks help (sunflower seeds, gum, tootsie pops) but the easiest way to stop is to have a busy schedule. when your just sitting around is when you will be the urge the most cuz ur bored.

Raef LaFrentzParticipantDarko didn’t quit cigarettes because they were bad for him. Cigarretes quit Darko because he was bad for them.

mookieParticipantListen..you can quit. Mind over matter. Yes you will get severe cravings as your body has become dependent on them. But you have to control your mind. Cravings only last for a few minutes, that’s a medical fact. when someone quits and you go through the withdrawals and then your at the point where you just get cravings without the physical symptoms (headaches, trembling, etc) those cravings will go away within minutes. Best thing to do is soon as you get a craving, keep your mind busy! Think of random things and focus on that. Or eat something you enjoy, like chocolate, and this will stimulate dopamine release, a relaxing neurotransmitter, and make you forget about a square

Critically ThinkingParticipantim a smoker too, used to be the best athlete in my grade and now i can barely run a 1/4 mile lap around my high school track without stopping. its sad. i used to be a man amongst boys with my ability and size. now, even though only at a half pack a day, it makes a huge difference. you say you havent felt difference in your breathing, you have. sunflower seeds, that shit can work, ive seen a friend do it right in front of my own eyes. i wish i never started, im only 18 and i know ive gotta quit before its too late

apb540ParticipantIt can’t be that big of a deal. I mean AI was playing 40+ mpg while partying hard, gambling till late in the AM, and smoking mad beans, all on the reg. Keep it under 2 packs a day, remember the strong always survive, and you will be fine!

TRC1991Participantbe tough-minded and have the self-discipline to quit
anybody can quit
excuses or results what do you want?

DanEboyParticipantYou have to change your everyday routine. The patch, gum, all of that stuff won’t work. You have to WANT to quit, then change everything you normally do every day. Sounds weird but it works.
