Doesn’t it make sense for players like Love, Aldridge, and Gasol to look for 1 year max deals so that they can sign way bigger long term contracts next season?

If they were to do this it seems like their bird rights with their current teams wouldn’t be that big of deal because anywhere they sign will then have bird rights when they enter free agency next season.

Am I missing something here? It seems like signing a max 5 year deal right now could actually be a bad investment if players start getting 30 mil per year + starting next season.

I’m not signing a 5 year 110 million dollar contract, when I can make 20 mil this year and then sign a 5 year 180 million dollar contract. The math just doest add up.

I haven’t heard this mentioned anywhere, but I’ve been wondering about it.

I don’t know exactly about this question but I just read on NBC sports that Aldridge has informed that he is leaving the Blazers.

I think the Mavs and Spurs are the frontrunners for him and I don’t buy the Lakers as his top choice right now.

Stein said he wants to play for Spurs, Lakers, Mavs in that order.

The smallest contract these players can sign is a 1 year +1 player option contract.  Love is likely to take that contract and get a larger deal next year.  Jimmy Butler wanted that deal, but the Bulls offered the full 5 year max, so the shortest contract he can sign is a 3 year deal due to his restricted free agency.  Gasol and LMA could sign the 1+1, but they are both around 30 and likely want the long term security of a larger deal, as their play could begin to decline and their injury risk is higher.
