WrecklessParticipantOn the front page of this site they say that one of the top prospects in Europe, Dragan Bender has a 4+3 years agreement with Maccabi with a Million dollar NBA buy out in the last year. Can he declare at any time? For instance, would he be able to declare in the 2016 or 2017 draft, and then come over and play right away? Sorry if its a dumb question lol.

llperezjust did a quick google search and it says that european players can declare any time from when they are 19-22 years old. The calender year when they turn 19, they are eligible to declare meaning they can enter the draft at 18 assuming they turn 19 prior to the end of December. Once the player turns 23, they are no longer draft eligible and can only enter the nba as free agents available to all teams. Lots of guys will enter and get drafted and stay over seas for much longer but the team that drafted still holds their rights.

llperezwas reading up more on euro contracts and it says that if a player is drafted but doesnt like the team that drafted him, he can sit out for one year assuming he does not sign with any team worldwide and then he becomes draft eligible the next year to reenter the draft with the team who already selected him the prior year having no say. That seems really odd and it’s the first I have heard of it.

Mr. HookShotParticipantThis one popped up some time ago in another topic as well. Will never happen though, maybe only when a player gets severly injured right after the draft and sits out the entire year. Chances for that a slim to none however.

TenSecondTomParticipantHe can declare any time from year 19 on. He becomes automatically eligible (doesn’t need to declare) at age 22. Once his rights are retained by a team, it depends on the nature of his contract that determines when he could come over. Specifically, there needs to be an NBA opt-out clause during that part of the contract. The NBA has created a limit to which the amount of money a team can provide to the player in the buyout; the player has to supply the rest of the money. I hope this helps clarify things for you.

King CaluchaParticipantOpt-out and buy-out are not obligatory and they count for any team, not only NBA teams. Also, 1st round picks count agains the cap unless there’s evidence that the player has a contract with a non-NBA team.
There isn’t a limit for buyout money NBA teams can spend. However, only a certain part (600K this season if I’m not mistaken) doesn’t count against the salary cap. The rest counts as player salary.

TenSecondTomParticipantIn Dragan Bender’s case, he signed a 7 year deal with an NBA out after 4 years and on, so he’s eligible for the 2016 NBA Draft, but won’t be able to be brought over until 2018 under this contract.
