Is the word potential being thrown around too much? I mean we have alot of solid guys who are entering the Draft. But on the other hand, some players leave every year and are picked high and dont or wont pan out

Well, Daequan Cook of the Miami Heat was a strange pick and just last night he put up 20 pts in 3 pt shooting. You just never know.

Yeah I hate that word potential, but what are you going to say when you have so many raw players that are good. All the players leave either there freshman or sophomore years, so the only word that you can define a player is potential. Back in the old days you know the quality of a player because they stayed 3 or 4 years so it becomes lesser bust factors. institute 3 year college rule and then you wouldn’t have a problem identifying how a player will translate in the pros. Jrue Holiday should never be coming out, but he can, and has potential. Holiday is hiding something so that’s why he’s coming out because if he stays another year he could get exposed.

Jrue definately needs another year at Ucla, Russel Westbrook comparisons are way off seein that Westbrook has nba athleticism 2 go with a smooth game,is Jrue even athletic? BJ Mullens is still a MAJOR project. I only caught a few Ohio State games this season but anytime your an athletic seven footer that can walk and chew gum at the same time you would think he would be out on the floor way more than he was. Looks like Deandre Jordans draft night all over again.
One person who is a good college player at this point but im not sold on as a nba player right now is Tyreke Evans. I think scouts are trying 2 see a full time point guard at 6’6 but the flaws in his game make him an average 2 at best. Unorthodox shot, not very athletic or explosive ,not a good defender. Anybody agree?

yeah, I do agree that Tyreke, Jrue, and BJ should stay another year.

The thing is that I think Jrue will surpass Tyreke bc he has more “potential”

ALOT OF potential players sets alot of organizations back and keep them there for a few years! I think most of the time goes with the proven polish players than go with a player whom didnt produces but has protential..but its depends on the players if its a young team than go with the most certain player than a project player ie Brandon Wright

It’s a beautiful thing, my friends. It has produced both the best and worst draft picks in NBA Draft history.
It’s what makes drafts so interesting, because you have to balance drafting for team need while finding players that make can make an immediate impact, but you also don’t want to be the team that passes on a guy like Kobe Bryant, Dirk Nowitzki, Amare Stoudemire, Gilbert Arenas, Dwyane Wade, or decides to pick Emeka Okafor over Dwight Howard.
However, you also don’t want to be the guy that picks Kwame Brown or Darko Milicic, do you?
It’s all about risk/reward. The more risk you take, generally the higher the reward, or the bigger the bust.

In this draft, the biggest risk/reward players are probably Ricky Rubio, Brandon Jennings, BJ Mullens, and Jrue Holliday. These players have yet to prove themselves definitively on a major stage, and could be value pickups, or very disappointing picks.
I think Derozan has shown us enough to no longer be considered living purely on potential. I think he will be a very good player very soon.

I hate that word more than potential. Potential is a legitimate scouting word that is just overused. When people say, “Man this guys is ‘long’. What the hell does that even mean? It’s all based on whether you arms are exactly proportional to their height. No one is perfectly proportional. That is one of the worst terms ever made.

In addition to the guys you named, it also describes Luol Deng, Elton Brand, Andre Iguodala, Josh Smith, Al Jefferson, etc.
It’s not necessarily a bad thing…but certainly not a direct indicator of NBA success.
