valentineTo preserve draft stock and avoid getting injuries.
College is just a stopover for these top guys.
It wouldn’t be a popular move…but it would be a smart move in some ways.
It would absolutely destroy college basketball if it became a trend.
Look at Oden, Embiid….
NBA teams would love it…Fans would hate it

BallerScriptParticipantNBA teams wouldn’t love it! Less game footage to go over and evaluate, less evidence for scouts, less development in flow of the game and confidence. The NBA would not like this.

Hype MachineBigger sample size comes at the cost of injuries. It only applies for top picks who have clearly locked in a high pick.
If an NBA scout cant give me a scouting report on Ben Simmons or Brandon Ingram by now…he’s not worth his paycheck.

NickWayne87ParticipantIve been thinking bout this for YEARS now. Someone like Ben Simmons should do it. What is he really playing for? He’s not coming back, they not winning a championship, and he would’ve been the number one pick had he never played a game. Now its all but inevitable. Why continue?

CrossyboyParticipantI understand the logic, but if I were a scout I’d hate it.
No prospect is the finished article, the most important thing is their commitment to improve.
Anyone who’s willing to shut their season down and ruin their team’s season isn’t anyone I’d want anywhere near my NBA team.

I.C.Y.U.NV.MEParticipantI think it’s a b¡tch move honestly. You make a commitment to a certain university and program then break that commitment for selfish reasons. I get you want to preserve yourself as much as possible but injuries can happen at anytime. You can get out of bed and get injured. You can injure yourself during a workout. If it’s gonna happen, it’s gonna happen. Plus, what happened to guys wanting to compete and show why they’re the best and why they deserve to be the #1 pick? If a guy just quit halfway thru the season that will definitely show me where his commitment is and where his competitive spirit level is at.

HitsterParticipantInteresting idea especially if a player had been playing well and got a really high draft stock at the time. It’s almost like a player saying I’m not going to college, I’ll get an agent do a few deals to give me income and spend a year honing my skills and the draft has to judge me on my HS record in effect.
If a player was on a powerhouse college team, I doubt they’d shut down mid season if they could have a run in the NCAA tournament.
Very interesting idea though so +1 from me.
Greg Oden had a hand opp at the start of his college year and didn’t play to December I think but if Embiid had shut down when his draft hype was huge it would have been very interesting.

ropeParticipantFirst, all of these guys are still prospects and the benefit from playing against high level competition, even more so if the games are close.
If I was an NBA GM, I would never draft a guy who put himself in front of the opportunity to play the game. It is one thing if they are injured, but another to revert to self preservation. Everyone understands the risk, but pro sports are about guys who operate without fear.

Mr.JoshuaParticipantIf a player has that kind of fear in his heart, I wouldn’t want to use a number one pick on them.
I think players should spend a year overseas (like Jennings, Mudiay) and make some money rather than making coaches and universities money, but you need to be playing.

negguaryParticipantis blatantly robbing these high level players….I would love it! That might force them to at least compensate those high level players.

Insane13ParticipantThere could be good and bad consequences if someone did this depending on how there team is doing. Say theres no chance for a NCAA tournament berth might as well shut it down. Also, the NCAA is getting money off of their play jerseys etc. What does the player gain from injury if it was to happen ? But also, it may make them look bad in terms of giving up on their team but what more could they gain if their already seen as the number one pick. People are saying they wouldnt draft them but say Oden, Simmons, or LeBron for example went to college and did this. I’m pretty sure they would still go first.

Hype MachineYou are right…no way a teams taking a less talented player over the #1 prospect because they quit college.
Teams will throw entire seasons away just for a shot at one of these top guys.
If Simmons and Ingram did it…no chance would the Lakers or 76ers choose Kris Dunn ahead of them.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantEmmanuel Mudiay basically did this last year. He played 17 games in China. The problem with the Mudiay plan is that the 32.5 percent shooting and sky high turnover rate scares people. No matter how much a person could have liked Mudiay going into the draft, or liked Dante Exum going into the 2014 draft, it is hard to have that same conviction after seeing a completely understandable struggle for them by going from high school and AAU to the NBA.
I think people have to disconnect the unfair structure of the NCAA where athletes who are basically marketing employees of the university (and are not treated in the same way TAs, grad assistants, and research assistants are where they are viewed as both employees and students) and what is best for a player’s development. The best thing for a player is to play, be well-coached, and challenged. Skal Labissiere would not be better off if this season were to not have taken place. It only would been pushed back and done under a much brighter light. Ben Simmons is getting better during this season because he is learning to deal with teams packing in their defense against him. Ideally, he takes this into the offseason and realizes the next step is gaining enough confidence to at least keep them honest from 15 feet.

daggers818ParticipantNot saying he shut it down, but the brief college career of Kyrie did not hurt his draft position one bit.
Also, that kind of behavior by college players would give further ammunition to NBA owners in the next round of the CBA to push for 20 years as the minimum draft age. They already complain about not having enough eval time as it stands.

circumlocution75Participantbut we seem to be the only country that has a problem w/ 18 y/o’s going straight to the pro’s….. The "One & done" thing is kindo of a joke anyway right…. it’s a wink, wink – nod, nod just to keep college basketball alive…. so it benefits the NCAA & the schools & it benefits NBA franchises b/c they get to scout these kids before signing them to gaurenteed $$$
Think about some of the players who were top 5 in early season Mock Drafts who slid completely out of the 1st round & did not receive that guarenteed money…… The Draft is already a crap shoot…. W/o that Freshman "One & Done" season for the "Top" prospects there would be A Lot of busts……
