Portland’s depth chart at the moment. About $40m on the books for this year.

    D.Lillard—T.Frazier—P.Connaughton

    CJ.McCollum—G.Henderson

    A.Aminu—A.Crabbe

    N.Vonleh—E.Davis

    M.Plumlee—M.Leonard—C.Kaman

Portland has enough space to take on a salary dump trade. Who could they trade for?

I think Portland realizes that losing LaMarcus Aldridge puts them out of contending status in the West. Even if they traded for someone like David Lee, they probably would have to give up a young guy who could help them more in the future than Lee would in his one season in Portland. Plus they’d still be looking at finishing around 7th or 8th in the West at best. If I’m them, I just sign a few more middle to lower tier free agents to fill out the roster and build for the future around Damian Lillard. Noah Vonleh has star potential and could be something special in a few years if he’s groomed the right way (not sure Charlotte did that last season with him). Portland holds onto their 2016 and 2017 1st round picks if they don’t make the playoffs too, and I’m sure the front office is aware of this. The 2017 draft looks like it could be pretty special at the top. If the Blazers could manage to get someone like Josh Jackson or Jayson Tatum in 2017, they’d have a dangerous young core moving forward.

They’re probably best off sitting on the cap space and pouncing around deadline time to either facilitate 3-team deals, get a guy on an expiring deal who’s team thinks they might not stay, or steal some picks to help a team get under the tax. There’s no FA’s left who would impact this team enough, as constructed, to spend long-term $ on. They’ve got some nice young athletic pieces, but they’re not a serious threat for the west playoffs w/o LaMarcus, so I’d hold off on taking a David Lee or Joe Johnson type vet on a big contract for now.

Portland has a very solid young core.

Leonard is the real key IMO. If he can continue to improve like he did last year then he and Lillard are going to be amazing together.

Vonleh will come off the bench I’d imagine, with Meyers and Plumlee playing the 4/5 together.

I think Henderson could start as well with CJ playing heavy minutes as 6th man and being the focal point when Lillard is on the bench.

But it’s going to be interesting to see how this team does and what Lillard looks like without his vets around him to ease his burden.
