Players Who Had Their College Careers Screwed Up....Or Close To it.

Excerpt from the thread: http://nbadraft.net/forum/college-exposes-hyped-players

"Also....Dockery really shouldve went somewhere else. I remember in pre-draft camps some scouts were amazed at how good he was to be a relative unknown at such a big school. They wondered why K had him buried for so long. He had some talent....but those years at Duke set him back. I remember his senior year there....he was saving their azz and I was like dang...this guy is good, why didnt he get any burn?

Daniel Ewing was another guy that didnt fit at Duke. These were top HS players we are talking about....they didnt necessarily get exposed....they just didnt fit. Coach K drives defense hard, if you have some deficiencies...you will be in his doghouse....the problem is, if you ever get in his doghouse, you may as well transfer because you will NEVER get out.

I remember I saw Ricky Price in the mall before his senior year....I told him he should transfer. He didnt. Man, you tell me how a guy with that athleticism and game who in his SOPHOMORE season avg 14ppg and 3.5rpg while playing 32mpg go to his senior year playing 8mpg with avg of 2.7ppg and 1.1rpg??? Price was heading for 1st team all-acc the next year before he somehow fell out of favor with Coach K. K gave Carrawell his spot which was bullchit because Carrawell on his best day wasnt half that player Price was on his worst."

Name some other players you feel that had their college careers ruined....or close to it.

I thought Daniel Ewing had such

smooth game. As much as I respect Coach K, he always brings those white boards out and metal strips then drops the ceilings on guys. Even Chris Duhon, who came in a volume shooter with great range and left a defensive stalwart.

Somebody should do the research,

Coach K leads the world in turning McDonald's All Americans into 2nd rounders in the draft. While somehow probably leading the world in overinflated lottery busts at the same time. And before you say the McDonald status is not a barometer of pro ability, which is correct, it still proves guys come in with more rank relative to guys in thier class and leave with less. Or that he recruits over rated guys and should not get credit for recruiting great players if with find out it was the player that stunk after all and not something he did or didn't do.

I like Coach K and respected how he let Kyrie play his game last year.

also from the previous thread...

"Its not surprising....K's mentor...Bobby Knight did the same thing with Delray Brooks...took a HS POY and buried him on the bench. Brooks transferred to Providence under Rick Pitino and formed a backcourt with Billy Donovon and took the Friars to their 2nd ever FINAL FOUR appearance."

Brooks was USA Today Player of the Year in High School and Knight for whatever reason started giving him 2mpg in his sophomore year. Every coach has a doghouse....but most of the times, you can work your way out of it. If Coach K or Knight puts you in theirs, its pretty much equivalent to purgatory.

my post on the other thread was basically saying how I though Josh McRoberts made a mistake by going to Duke. I could be wrong, he may not have been more than he is now but I dont believe that. McRoberts had a style that wasnt traditional at Duke. He was one of the most athletic bigs that ever played there...and probably the first true athletic big they had under Coach K. Cherokee Parks was athletic but not on McRoberts level. Plumlee is athletic now but he is no where near the prospect McRoberts was.

I dont buy Plumlee as a prospect in the slightest. Think about this...McRoberts has been in the league for like 5 years right? He is still more than one year younger than Hansbrough...and he is only 3 years older (almost exactly 3 years) than Plumlee....lol. McRoberts is 25 and Plumlee is 22.

Bob Huggins

He is the sleazy character thatyou somehow still like, like Tony Soprano.

But maybe because he didn' tever make guys go to class or by punished he took guys with loads of talent and killed it. Corie Blount, Tony Bobbitt, Demar Johnson, Kenny Satterfield, Catier Martin, Steve Logan, Dontonio Wingfield, Devin Ebanks, Melvin Levitt, Bill Walker. Not to mention none of these guys have degrees.

He takes guys and they leave as people who routinely afterward made terrible decisions about there basketball future or lack the skillset to have a future after showing so much promise intially.

Greg Paulus should be in the NFL

Greg Paulus should be in the NFL at least on the bench as a third Quaterback, but he drank the Dookie flavored KoolAid.

I got the winner

you guys are fogetting the most important player who got screwed in college. Randy Livingston LSU. It was the post Shaq era and he and Ronnie Henderson where supposed to dominate. Randy was supposed to be that dude at PG. 6'4''. NBA body, Thing was, he kept tearing his knees up. How many times did he get his knee torn? 2? 3?

yes, Livingston didnt have the college career that many envisioned, but it wasnt LSU or Dale Brown's fault. The dude just had bad knees.

This is a thread about the coach/team's style or philosphy ruining someone's career or nearly ruining it. There were a lot of college busts. We are not focusing on that right now. As I stated...Delray Brooks had great success AFTER he left Indiana.

Speaking of LSU...remember Jamie Brandon???? great article here ....

it was publicized

that Rick Pitino advised Roderick Rhodes to declare for the NBA draft...after Rhodes....Pitino's first big time recruit at UK was a bust in the program. Pitino accompanied Rhodes to the pre-draft workouts and when Rhodes received little buzz he decided to return to UK. Upon his decision to return, Pitino informed him that he had basically given his scholarship to top recruit Ron Mercer. (thats infamously how the story went)

Rod subsequently transferred to USC.

Anyone who saw Rhodes play knows he was nothing but the truth but he really clashed with Pitino due to his "selfish" and flashy style of play.

a lot of Kentucky faithful say this story is not true and Pitino never pushed Rhodes out the door. the fact is, as soon as Rhodes declared, that opened the spot up for the heavily coveted Mercer to sign, which happened almost immediately after.

more details here:

Chris Herren- alcohol and

Chris Herren- alcohol and drugs ruined his career in the Big East but ended up salvaging a short NBA career.

Jamine Peterson- averaged 20 and 10 as a sophomore for PC before getting kicked out of school, his numbers went up every game including a 38 point final game.

I'm going to ahead and put

I'm going to ahead and put Sheldon Williams in this category. Sure, he made the NBA. But the kid was supposed to be VERY good, and was the 5th pick in the draft. Now? Overweight, slow, and has been nothing shy of awful for several years.

P.S. - Is there any Duke fan out there that DOESNT hate Shavlik Randolph? Talk about a waste. I'll never forget when he declared for the draft and I laughed hysterically.

I do really hate this is a Duke bashing thread also

Even if I helped it be that way. Coach K is a great Coach and leader of men.

As far as coaches who minimized his teams potential, how about Larry Brown in Melo and Lebrons first Olympics.

For a player who ALMOST had

For a player who ALMOST had his college career screwed up before he got smart and bolted for the draft is:

Rajon Rondo, if you remember at Kentucky his sophomore year, Tubby would play him off the ball, and bench him for no reason, and that would bring Rondo's confidence down and it didn't help any that Tubby wanted Rondo to play the slow it down system, instead of uptempo which suites Rondo better.

Luckily he bolted after his sophomore year and got drafted 21st,who knows if he wouldn't have had a short leash at UK maybe he would have went much higher in the draft, maybe what he's doing in the NBA wouldn't be that much of a suprise considering his UK career numbers were only:

9.7 PPG, 4.2 APG,4.5 RPG

Rondo

Trust me on this. Rondo got benched in KY for the exact same reasons the Celtics were open to trading him. He was getting benched for guys that were not a tenth of the player he was, but those guys were buying in. It's probably the same reason that he fell as far as he did because anyone that watched him play in college knew that he could play. He obviously still could not shoot then, but he was a guy that could distribute and play d, as well as have plenty of games where he was the leading rebounder.

Sheldon had a great career at

Sheldon had a great career at Duke though. He was not one of those that got screwed royally...like Ricky Price.

Price was the worst case. He avg 32mpg and 14ppg as a soph. His senior year he only played 8mpg and avg 2ppg.

The weird thing is, price was a big time recruit who had NBA skills and he seemingly accepted his benching and never complained about it. In fact, Price is a big time supporter of Duke and Coach K to this day. They said the reason why he was relagated to the bench wasnt because he was not as good a defender as Chris Carrawell, but rather he had serious academic issues that he never rectified. He missed some time due to academics and they say Coach K wanted him to improve and he didnt, therefore he didnt play. He was also suspended for plagarism of a term paper.

Ranked as the #4 player in the nation coming out of HS. Price was a 6'6" guard that was lightning quick with a decent jumpshot and midrange game. He was a tremendous leaper. He was an All-ACC performer as a soph.

Attached is a clip of some highlights between Duke and Virginia...who ironically featured another guy who had a lot of turmoil in his college career....6'5" SG scoring machine Courtney Alexander. The boy had sick handle. He is who Wroten reminds me of as far as his ability to go one on one off the dribble. They are the same height, but Wroten is more of a PG and Alexander was a great scorer/shooter. He made the NBA All Rookie Team....but he didnt last long in the league.

Courtney Alexander

doesnt exactly apply to this thread but he does in a way, he was off to a great start at UVA then all the criminal behavior came about. UVA was about to be a national power and I believe had just came off a deep run in the NCAA tourney and they brought in Melvin Whitaker, an athletic shotblocker and rebounder (from my neck of the woods, Garner/Raleigh) and Courtney...a 6'5" scoring machine from the SG position.

Whitaker slashed a man's face with a razor and went to prison before he played a game for UVA...and Alexander was arrested for punching his girlfriend. There were several other incidents that led to the investigation and firing of Jeff Jones. UVA basically had to start over and still havent fully recovered from that. The consensus is, that Jones was letting his players and recruits get away with murder (or close to it). Thats why I added Courtney to this thread.

Alexander was lucky that Tarkanian was accepting misfits at Fresno State, and brought in guys like Melvin Ely, Chris Jeffries, Rafer Alston, Chris Herren (dude could ball but couldnt stay off the sauce), Terrance Roberson, Avondre Jones, and Winfred Walton.

Alexander was able to salvage his college career and avg 25ppg in his senior campaign....leading up to the Magic drafting him 13th overall in 2000.

I also have to say that some

I also have to say that some players have really struggled while playing for Paul Hewitt at Georgia Tech. Udofia has never progressed and Favors didnt look like the monster he was supposed to be while playing along side Lawal and Shumpert.

Dale Brown was another old school coach that I never thought was a mastermind. I mentioned Brandon. All those teams that had the top talent didnt do anything....and he got more out of Darryl Joe and Nikita Wilson than he did when he had the NBA squad of Shaq, Stanley Roberts, and Chris Jackson (Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf). Those guys had good careers, but guys like Brandon, Tito Horford (Al's Dad), and Lester Earl failed to live up to the expectations. Brandon was a Chicago legend and was ranked in everyones top 10 coming out of HS with a class that included Grant Hill and Penny Hardaway and he wasnt even drafted.
