Pistons should make the playoffs and currently look to be drafting around the middle (16th)

    Who will they draft ?

I would love to see Jarrett Allen, but I think his draft stock will rise and he will be taken before the Pistons pick. The pistons would prob take a SG.

I wouldn’t mind Allonzo Trier or Josh Hart, but would cringe if they took Kennard, Ferguson or Bacon….

Take Grayson Allen if he comes out. He can be their new Bad Boy.

I see one of the point guards currently mocked in the top 10 dropping, I just dont see 6 teams up there drafting a point with many alreaddy having point guards established as in their future plans. Detroit on the other hand seem to want to move on from Reggie Jackson, so whichever guy drops to them could end up being a steal.

Pistons roster is a mess imo, and with the rumors during the deadline of potentially moving Drummond, it seems SVG thinks so too.

This post is asking about the draft, but in reality, I want to ask about Stanley Johnson. My god, he’s been terrible. I thought he was really good his rookie year as a 19 year old. He was big, rebounded, and he seemed like he was going to be a good two way player. Piston fans, what is going on with Stanley, and do you still have faith that he can develope?

The reason I ask that question is because this draft in an interesting one, in which the top is loaded with great PG’s, and the teens/mid lottery has a lot of good foward prospects. This might be the perfect year for the pistons to try and move up, or just trade the pick for a PG if they are so keen on letting Jackson go.

As it stands right now, the Pistons are one of the better defensive teams in the L, holding opponents to 102 ppg, but they only score 102 ppg as well…They need someone to put the ball in the hoop. It’s kind of hard to build around a player who can’t create their own offense or be on the court in the last 2 minutes of a close game. Drummond, for what it’s worth, is a net negative offensive player. I can see why people want a SG, but what’s the matter with Pope? If anything he has been one of the bright spots on this team, averaging 15/3/3 and making 3’s at a really nice clip.

I think the Pistons need to target versatile shooters, so if they are picking #16 I would try to snap Miles Bridges, TJ Leaf, or Justin Jackson.

I know some of those guys seem redundant with Morris/Tobias on the roster, and they just signed Luerr and drafted Ellison, but none of those guys do it for me. Tobias needs to stay on the bench, Morris needs to get shown the door soon and just doesn’t fit this team from an age perspective, and the Pistons literally, have the least talented backcourt in the NBA. Boban, Baynes, and Drummond are all under contract for years, and I think they should get someone to pair nicely with these big bruising centers.

Like I said though, I’m doing everything I can to get a PG that can shoot this draft if im SVG

I think Bridges and Leaf will be gone by then…Jackson seems like a reach at 16 but I do think he will be a solid NBA rotational player. I could see them going after somebody like Tyler Lydon moving up their board after a nice tourney to play next to Drummond long term.

I never had faith in Stanley Johnson, I always thought he was overrated….

Aran had Stanley Johnson in and around the top 5 for alot of the season so naturally in true nbadraft.net style the sheep are going to flock together and overrate him.

      http://www.nbadraft.net/forum/stanley-johnson-floor-and-ceiling

I dont’ actually mind Marcus Morris, I wish we had gone after his brother aswell. Marcus is a cheap contract, he is a bit tough and bit of a bad boy which pistons fans love. I don’t expect him to be an all star – he is and always be a borderline starter in the NBA depending on which team he is on, which as a fan if you can accept then you will not be disappointed…

I hated the Ellenson drafting last year, I really wanted Korkmaz

I gotta admit I was wrong about Johnson. I thought he would have a similar career to Kaehi Leonard being slept on in the draft and slowly developing into a good all around player. Sounds crazy now but at this point Kawhi had career averages of 12-ppg and season high 16-ppg in his fourth season.

Johnson was never really put into a good situation in Detroit. He is 6’6. Not tall enough to play PF and too bulky in my opinion to play SG. Detroit perfered to go with Morris and brought over Harris and there has been no minutes for Johnson. I still think he can be successful elsewhere.

I have a love/hate thing going on with Stanley. He’s talented, but his arrogance makes Kobe look humble. With his performances in the Drew League, it looked like he figured he could come in, be the man and not have to work for it. This culminated in his one game suspension for breaking team rules.

Personally, I think SVG is trying to break him down, maybe take away some of the arrogance so he can build him up again. At least that’s what I hope is going on. I have no doubt that given minutes and touches Stanley will produce. But if he’s not going to play the way SVG wants, that will never happen. Perhaps he needs a change of scenery?

The reason why I said a SG is KCP has not been signed long term. Since big contracts were given to reggie Jackson and drummond, I hear the pistons are a bit cautious about giving a big third contract to KCP. Even if we do re-sign him we still need a backup SG

I did think about a PG as someone said 6 pg won’t go in the top 10 so we could look at frank n. The only thing is I think reggie Jackson and his contract is just about untradeable. Why Tried !! Rubio, Lou Williams, Elfrid Payton were all talked about but the other teams did not want reggie’s contract.

Also the feel with pistons fans at the moment is which PG is actually helping us more – Reggie Jackson or Ish Smith

Let me tell you right now that the Pistons roster is actually set for years. You got Reggie under contract for another 3 years kcp is going to get resigned to the max contract and isn’t going anywhere. Andre 4 more years under contract. Tobias and Marcus Morris both with bird rights and 2 more years after this year. Ish Smith is here for 2 more years. Leuer is on for 3 more. Stanley still on his rookie contract…If Tom Gores is willing to spend luxery money which I think he will because he’ll want a champion quickly at the LCA downtown….we can have this same squad for 5 years or better. I think we’d eventually get to the top of the east with that recipe with our entire squad coming into its prime essentially. I’m not phased by the rough start to this year, Drummonds been the x factor all year with his inconsistent effort. He plays hard we usually win he plays like a bum out L column pays for it.

If any of the top PG prospects fall to us I’ll be geeked perfect situation for us with Reggie being a slight question mark and Ish almost is definitely gone in summer 19 so perfect timing for a young pg talent to develop in Detroit

On the Reggie Jackson Ish Smith situation they’ve been splitting time Reggies been playing the first 6 min of the quarter Ish the last 6 it’s been working for them they’re fine with it so why change things Reggie looks a lot more comfortable since they’ve been cutting his minutes.

It will be interesting to see who the Pistons draft, I agree with the points above, they have a core intact over the next few years – Drummond, Jackson, Leuer, Harris etc. But with a lot of the roster on longer big contracts, they will not have any FA space unless they make moves.

KCP is a good player who has been their starting SG for the last 3 seasons but rumours that he wants a max deal mean that they will be once again one of the highest caps in the NBA. I rate KCP but a SG averaging 14.5ppg in his last two seasons doesn’t translate to a $20 million a year player in my view. However having lost Monroe then Detroit would be wary of losing KCP if they didn’t meet his contract demands. If they want to be savy, let him sign an offer sheet elsewhere then match so they don’t have to pay Bird rights type premium a retaining team often have to.

As regards the draft, the Pistons are in a frontcourt heavy area of the mocks so the names listed above make sense. But also as said if one of the hyped backcourters falls or begins to fall then Detroit could easily snap him up or look to trade up to get him. A player predicted to go in top 6 to 8 is a lot easier to grab if they are still on board after around 10th pick and you want to trade up from say 15th/16th. Remember when Kawhi fell and suddenly the Spurs moved up to get him.

I think Detroit will take a less hyped PG.

This draft class at PG is so good that probably even some of the less heralded prspects could end up being starting caliber PG. It should not surprise us if PG 6, 7 and 8 are first rounders this year, particularly given few teams need bigs and the lack of talented bigs in comparison (this site and other mocks have between 7 and 10 Centers in the first round, what imo is clearly not going to happen, because way less than 7 teams are in need in that position as much as PG, and the talent is just not comparable, that 7+ figure should shift towards PGs).

Someone like Jawun Evans there would not surprise me.

What I meant with KCP is that he basically will be matched at any price tag and the Pistons won’t verbally say that because teams may just try to force their hand and quickly offer Pope the max but I would bet the house hes in Detroit at least one more year if not 4-5.

As for the draft I think whichever C that can immediately help us is our best route but with the current roster I wouldn’t mind packaging it for a vet big man. We have literally every spot on the depth chart filled other than maybe a 3rd PG.

Detroit may not be in the top half of the east yet but we’ve got a huge upside with the coaching/management/ownership stability and a growing young roster that is winning more and more and doing it constructively. Its a matter of time before we start winning allot of games.

To the guy who said Morris should be shown the door he’s been our only player we have to create their own offense one on one. He’s a mismatch at SF which is why we’ve been starting Leuer.

Tobias just gels so well with Smith on the 2nd unit because they both are great in transition and both make quick decisions in the half court. Morris is super consistent offense for us and I think is our MVP at least offensively.
