The pistons do not have a back up Center, now that they have traded away their back up (Slava Kratsov). My questions who would be a good back up center?

Personally, I would like a more “experienced” backup ..which is why I would give ben wallace a call up. Ben wallace would be good in his back up role, especially playing with chauncey, stuckey and Bynum. Also, he can still mentor Drummond(even monroe and smith).

If ben Wallace is unavailable, then I would try Antonio McDyess. Dyess stated that he wanted to come back to the nba. He can provide up to 10-15 minutes a night. He has a great 15 footer, turn around jumpshot, and can hold his own at playing center. Finally, he has chemistry with billups and stuckey as well.

third option is that we can pick up Kratsov again if he get released from the bucks.

Why not a guy who actually played in the NBA last year? Drew Gooden and the Vanilla Gorilla actually played last year, are experienced veterans and are actually looking to sign with a team.

Last I checked, Slava Kratsov is STILL in the NBA and is over 6’9….read the whole post.

Ok, I don’t know why you’re assuming A) the Bucks would just release Kravtsov B) the Pistons would want to sign a guy they just traded and C) Kravtsov would want to resign with the team that just traded him away. That kind of thing just doesn’t happen. And so I addressed the other two guys, who your post was mainly about…and they are both old and not ideal center size.

Oh, I did…a hypothetical about picking up a guy that “might ” get released doesn’t make Ben Wallace or McDyees better options.

A team can’t re-sign a player they traded if he’s released for a calendar year from the date of the trade or July 1 after the expiration of his contract, whichever is sooner.

So Slava Kratsov couldn’t return to the Pistons this season regardless.

Yep, per the CBA, Slava cannot come back to Detroit this yr.

Ben Wallace … NO thank you.

Dice. Doubt there’s any real interest in playing this yr.

The backup C is most likely to be Monroe. Or Drummond. Don’t think we’ll see a ton of them on the floor together to be honest. Maybe 25-28 minutes.

We still need to sign someone. Just don’t think they’ll ever play (barring an injury … which would absolutely kill our season).

I’d look at Aldrich. Eddy Curry. Jason Collins or Kyrylo Fesenko.

I dont think they need a back up center, Monroe can play center when drummond is on the bench that way they can play with each other the least amount of time

First option should be trying to get a player that fills that role while being pretty young (cole aldrich).

if that isnt available, they really just need somebody that could play 5-8 minutes per night, while playing servicable defense. i had hoped the pistons would make a run at jeremy tyler but the knicks beat them to it. personally, even at their respected stages in their careers, i dont think wallace or mcdyess could provide as much to a team as some of these other younger players.

Jerome Jordan is pretty good. Good shot blocker and a nice athlete.

Is Andre Drummon a named starter? i know he put up good numbers when he got minutes last season, but i was thinking that the Josh Smith signing meant that they would bring Drummond off the bench.

i expect to see some line-ups of drummond, monroe and smith together, but i’d expect more combinations of drummond and monroe without josh or drummond and smith without greg while having a starting front court of Monroe, Smith and Singler. although i do agree that it would be nice to have a 3rd center on the team, a guy who will barely get minutes unless an injury happens or something. personally, i like the cole aldrich idea, someone who has some potential still, or you can get a mentor for drummond, a kurt thomas or Jason Collins type or someone who is used to the role of 3rd big in Haddadi.

I’d love Big Ben to go back to the team as a mentor but I agree his playing days are over and Diceman retired a couple of years ago. The Pistons have got Sheed back as an assistant coach and have resigned Chauncy Billups as a player so Coach Cheeks has immediately got two proven winners on his team.

Watching Sheed on the bench will be more fun than watching some games but seriously he is a skilled offensive big man and can really help Monroe and Drummond develop. Billups will be a natural locker-room leader who can pass his knowledge onto a young team and Coach Cheeks comes after a successful spell at the Thunder so the team suddenly has a strong winning mentality added to it.

Regarding an extra big, I agree a solid veteran who will happily sit out games but can step in if required would be an ideal signing, I’m not sure if Kurt Thomas is still on the active roster but a player of his type would be ideal.

I’d assume that they will use mainly a 3 man front court roster with Smith, Monroe and Drummond. We can assume that Smith and Monroe definitely start, Drummond can easily come from the bench for another year if needed as he’ll still see good minutes and can continue his development.
