I hate what Philly are doing, tanking so badly. I know alot of kids on here think this is such a great idea but in the last 10-15 years what teams have been good with being so bad or tanking ?

Lakers, Spurs, Heat and Pistons are all the top teams over the past 10 years. They won with free agents not tanking and draft picks.

Sure some users say use the "Thunder" model of tanking. Well the Thunder are a good team but have not won a championship and also got lucky with their draft picks. The Kings and Wolves have been bad and in the lotto for so long now and not had this work.  In fact, other than the Thunder, what other team has this worked for ? Lots of teams dont’ make the playoffs or are bad for a number of seasons.

After losing Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis things went downhill for Seattle.  They had four losing seasons, two of which were quite bad (tanking/rebuilding) the other two seasons they still won 30+ games.  I remember coach Brooks in 08-09, they asked him if he was going to tank to get a good draft pick.

"He said no as that creates a losing attitude. He would much rather his team finish 8th and get swept for the playoff experience than to create a losing attitude and the small % of doing well in the draft".

The Thunder got lucky and did well with their draft picks.

07 Durant – Oden the bust went before him. Jeff Green from the Ray Allen trade.

08 Westbrook at 4.  Beasley and Mayo went ahead of him

09 Harden at 3. Thabeet went at 2.

Their team would also not be as successful if they did not strike draft gold with Ibaka with pick 24. (Spurs with Parker and Manu)

Draft picks are like chances – some work out, some don’t.  Sure, if you get a top 5 pick your chances are good but you could still draft Waiters, T-Rob, Bennett, Cody Zeller, Derrick Williams, Kanter, Wes Johnson etc.

Others say Jazz should tank and build a good team. But alot of these same kids were saying how much better Kanter/Favors would be vs Al Jeff/Milsap. The Jazz have had alot of lotto picks and look how they are going. Even where they are going, they are not going to contend in the next 3-4 years and will prob lose their players to free agency. They haven’t extended Kanter’s contract.

Sixers sign injury risks Brand, JRich, Bynum then do the same in the draft with Noel and Embiid.  All these rookie and young players, some are going to work out and some are not.

The Sixers will not win a championship in the next 5-6 years no matter how much they tank and stockpile as many picks as possible….

Its a rare successful  tactic. Philly barring a huge trade is making a mistake choosing to suck for 3 to 5 years. Maybe a trade happens but if guys dont develop their not worth much.

i’m not sure if it’s fair to not consider that the 76ers will only have $13.5M under contract next season and could make a big run at free agency next summer.

they have the following under contract for next season…embiid, noel, mcw, wroten and jerami grant with saric, floating in the background.  that’s a solid core of young players.  add a few solid veterans and a lottery pick, could be a whole new ball game.

Detroit has not made the playoffs in forever and still look unlikley for this year. The Spurs got their building blocks with #1 pick Robinson and Duncan. Philly is not a destination location you have awful weather so LA and Miami are not comaprable. Draft is your best weay to get better if your philly.

the Sixers have been in rebuild mode for what…2 seasons???…They were one of those teams that tried every season to put out a good team and have had some historically bad teams in the process…

The Philadelphia 76ers have definitely tried to be bad the last two years, it started with Jrue Holiday for Nerlens Noel(consensus # 1 Pick before he hurts himself in his freshman year at Kentucky) and a draft pick which ends up becoming the best young International player under 21 Dario Saric…

They inevitably bombed the next season, especially after trading away wasted draft pick Evan Turner(who was the best player in college BBall that season but he should never have been drafted ahead of DMC/Favors or Monroe, nobody saw Paul George putting it all together honestly, maybe 5% of the people on this site saw him becoming a top 10-20 player in the league this soon)

The season after we trade for Noel and draft the inevitable R.O.Y MCW we land the 3rd pick(miss out on the golden boy Andrew Wiggins and draft another #1 consensus pick pre injury in Joel Embiid, our 2nd round pick KJ McDaniel could be a fine player too…

Along the way our GM has amassed more draft picks and CAP space(now and down the road)…He’s also nabbed a potential 6th man in Tony Wroten for peanuts, I’m willing to give this young core time to get better/stronger/healthier and judge them in years 3,4 and 5…

I’m looking forward to the Top 3-5 pick we land and I appreciate the countless Hate threads created by losers like you who think the Philadelphia 76ers are the root of any issues you have with the idea of “Tanking” in the NBA, no hate whatsoever for teams that traded away superstars to large market teams for pennies on the dollar, or teams that are always at the bottom of the league no what who and what they do, or hell blame the NBA and their owners for putting the system in place…

All I wanna hear from here until June/July is…Who should we draft with the 2nd-4th pick(I believe the Lakers win top pick this year for some reason, them or the Bucks strangely)

I like K.A.T, Kelly Oubre and Manny Mudiay…

Robinson was hurt they did not tank. Middle of the pack or upper teams move on to win titles. Lottery teams who play for it sniff the playoffs sometimes and lose guys to FA and are back in the lottery unable to get over the hump unless they magically get a Lebron and when does that happen?

Yes, the lottery system is to help unfortunate teams get a future All-Star or Superstar player.  To deliberately tank so you can stack your team with Superstars for cheap is douchebaggery at it’s finest.  Everything the Sixers are doing should be frowned upon and goes against the sheer competitive atmosphere that is professional sports.  This is not to be confused with rebuilding…  Tanking for multiple seasons on purpose (and arrogantly I might add) haven’t been done before.   It’s just sad that of all markets, I’m surprised Philly is ok with this.

The examples you pointed out are pretty terrible. The Lakers suck balls this year and buy their championships because players want to play in LA. The Pistons havent been good in like 8 years and when they were good, they made savvy moves acquiring Billups before he was a stud, Ben Wallace before he was a stud and Rasheed when he was near the end of his prime. They didn’t "win" with free agency. They made smart organizational moves. The Heat literally tanked and blew up their roster for a summer to sign LeBron. They don’t sign him and Bosh and Pat Riley looks like the biggest idiot ever. You think if guys have the option to sign in Miami or Philly they are choosing Philly? San Antonio is the biggest exception to every rule in the NBA. They have won almost opposite of through free agency. They’ve won because of their player development.

People need to get over the 76ers tanking. The league has set up a culture where players leaving and teaming up and going to diferent teams is more important than the actual games. GMs of teams like the Lakers, Knicks, Heat wouldnt be successful in places like Minnesota, Milwaukee, or Philadelphia because those markets are not desirable for top free agents. Therefor those teams need to acquire their franchise pillars via the draft. This concept is not that complicated.

The year before LeBron went to Miami the Heat did not Tank as they were the 5th seed in the Eastern conference with a record of 47-35. Yes they cleared up salary cap space but they didn’t tank.

I’m from philly and everyone i know is fine with it! the reason being is we watched a team that finished 5 to 8 and didn’t have a chance at winning a championship.   Noone wants to watch a team that finishs 5 to 8 every season in the east because you know deep down your not winning anything.  You need stars to win a championship or young players to trade for star players.  Like the rockets did and the celtics did when they got the big 3.   Even though the team is tanking I have more fun watching this team then i did when we finished 5 through 8.  I really don’t understand why people outside of philly care because it just means you guys have a better chance at the playoffs since it seems like you guys like to be stuck in nowhere land

     @Tblazer

My bad I worded that wrong. You are right they didnt tank. But they did purge their entire roster to essentially sign two guys. They miss on that and Pat Riley looks like a turd. Isn’t that just as bad as "tanking"? Purging the entire roster so you can celebrate Christmas in July by signing two of the 10 best players in the league?
