steviechillzParticipantWhen I take a look at the league today versus the league 20 years ago, there are definitely BIG differences in how the game is played and who plays the game.In today’s NBA game, unlike the 90’s and 80’s, the league is dominated by PG’s.
Now that brings some ups and downs to it. We got some amazing talented and gifted talents such as Steph Curry, Russell Westbrook, John Wall, etc. And then we got some guys who should not be leading their respective teams, ala Brandon Knight, Raymond Felton, etc. I wanted to see who you guys thght about this crop of PG’s. These PG’s have all the gifts and athleticism to start and lead a team, but just haven’t been given a chance or unfortunately, other teams are starting players who should be role players.
1) Reggie Jackson
One word to summarize this guy is tough. Out of everyone on this list, he’s been given the best chance in terms of starting and running a team with IMO the best player on the planet right now, KD. There’s not much to hate on this kid about, he’s athletic, has a good handle, has a competitive spirit, and actually tries on defense. I’d take this guy all day over a lot of guys who are starting right now and he should have a mighty fine pay day when his contract is up.
2) Norris Cole
I remember Cole from his Cleveland state days. Seeing that stat line he once had…40 points 20 rebs 9 assists! When I saw that my mouth dropped, I instantly knew that the league wouldn’t pass up on this kid. The best thing I see in Cole is his fearlessness. he doesn’t care that Dwade is to his left, and LBJ is to his right, if he has the shot…he will take it. His defense has improved year to year, and I really don’t see any reason why if I was Spolestra I would start the overconfident Chalmers over Norris Cole.
3) Charles Jenkins
Only legit NBA fans will know who this guy is. Jenkins once played with the Warriors and impressed me by being a legit back-up PG. Then i saw more when he scored 20 against the Heat in their formation year. I saw an athletic second round pick, who could score in a multitude of ways. He did it at hofstra and when he was given minutes, he did it in the NBA. According to most sources, he was given way less minutes the next year, bc of his attitude. I never saw poor attitude when he was playing, but at the very least, when D-fish is still a back-up, then this guy should be given a chance.
4) Darren Collison
D.C. is a former UCLA PG who oozes leadership. Now he is a bit too shot happy, but that’s only bc he plays not too many minutes. And I don’t know if you have been paying attention to the Clippers, but they have been playing GREAT basketball with Collison at the helm. A team like the Bucks or the Lakers could definitely use his leadership. Don’t be surprised if you see this guy start next year.
5) Aaron Brooks
Aaron brooks is the little engine that could. Unfortuantely, during the lockout year, Brooks played overseas and lost his starting jobs to numerous PG’s including Kyle Lowry, Goran Dragic, and even Jeremy Lin. The PG has bounced around since then, being tossed around in Sacramento and eventually coming back to the Rockets. I don’t think he has a chance to start in Houston, but in the next couple of years, while he is still in his prime, some team should take a chance on this former most improved player.
6) Lorenzo Brown
Brown epitomizes a combo guard turned floor general. He didn’t play any PG in highschool, yet transitioned so well at NC state…making flashy passes, scoring when the team needed him the most, and playing great on-the-ball defense. The guy has played well for the 76ers this year after getting draft by the Timberwolves, but he still isn’t getting enough playing time. Teams should take a look at this guy.

ElPananderoParticipantI can see the case you’re making for the other guys, I may or may not agree on some, but its way to early to declare Lorenzo Brown a starter. He’s a good passer, but a pretty weak scorer and not a tremdous defender. He’s definetly got a role as a back-up, and he may devlop into a starter, but personally I think it’s way too soon to make that declaration.

steviechillzParticipantI see what you mean by being too early on the prediction, but based on what I saw in college and how he plays the game, I expect him to be in that starting role eventually if someone gives him a shot. Good feedback man.

Wow.

LitteringAnd…ParticipantJesus obviously not. What OP is saying is hat these guys are worthy of being starting point gaurds in the NBA; effectively they’re better than the worst few starting PG’s at the moment.

omphalosParticipantTony Wroten is a guy who should be starting somewhere. He has size, athleticism, passing ability and has played great this year, especially with MCW injured.
Maybe not ready to start yet, but soon.

hbomb3300ParticipantTotally agree on Wroten… I think the Grizzlies should of let Allen walk and kept Wroten.

invalidParticipantcollison and brooks are done, they have had started before, last year no team wanted them to start and they have been bargained , with a new crop of PG’s coming in i highly doubt they will start ever again (besides ofcourse when the real starter is injured)
and the rest outside of jackson if you start any of them on your team that would really sck. tho cole is a nice role player off the bench. but yeah at the very least they could use some minutes but not as starters

The QParticipantThe Celtics need to bring the local boy Jackson home as phase 1 of their re-tooling process.
That crap Olynyk pick doesn’t help matters though.

JoeWolf1I disagree with Charles Jenkins. There’s always been something about him that is likable, and he broke out for some pretty decent games as a rookie playing for the Warriors when they weren’t any good, but he’s not in the league right now, and although he’s capable of making a roster ( I suspect he chose to make more money elsewhere ), even the worst teams in the league would start someone else.
Firstly, He’s a shooting guard in a point guard’s body. Jenkins managed decent assist numbers in the Warriors’ uptempo offense as a rookie ( 6.9 apg per 36 min ), but he saw those numbers plummit as a soph as he played more of his natural position for a much improved Warriors team (3.6 apg per 36 min ). Jenkins raised some eyebrows as a rookie, but it’s pretty clear that a lot of that had to do with playing for a 23 win team.
Secondly, the most successful combo guards have a great outside shot. Jenkins is 4-22 in 110 NBA games and over 1,000 minutes in the big show. There are plenty of point guards that aren’t great shooters, but they’re usually good defenders or good distributers….Jenkins is below average in all three.
Jenkins wouldn’t have started in the 90’s either, he would have been in the same boat as Doug Overton
