Just read this in an article by espn’s Larue Cook:

Perry Jones arrived at Baylor as the No. 7-ranked recruit in the country, and the hype followed him: Kevin Garnett comparisons, chants of one-and-done and talk of a Big 12 title. But after the Bears lost five of their final six games and found themselves sitting at home during the 2011 NCAA tournament, a different type of hype followed him into the offseason: soft, passive and just not dominant.

"That’s what the media wants me to live up to," said Jones, who had just two field goals in each of his last two games. "They say I wasn’t dominant every game, so I’ve been working on that this summer. Trust me, I’ll be dominant every time I step on the floor this season."

    —-

To prove just how hungry he is for a trip to the NCAA tournament, Perry Jones implemented his own two-a-day schedule this summer in addition to the team-wide, two-a-day workouts. "I’m in the gym honing every aspect of my game," says Jones, who hit less than 35 percent of his jumpers and needs to show NBA scouts that a 6-11, 235-pound power forward can play with his back to the basket, something he did on only 79 of his 398 plays last season, according to Synergy. "I know I’ve still got a lot to prove," he says.

    ——

LOVE IT.   love to hear a recruit that listens to criticism, and turns it into a postitive.  Now, I’m not saying that this will translate to some tenacity on the court because who knows how summer work will translate into a profound mental changeF.  But overall, Im hoping for a breakout season from Perry. Pretty interesting quotes though from the big man. Any thoughts?

Obviously we have to wait to see if it pays off, but many, MANY highly touted players should take a page out of Jones’ book.

I think he will be better than last year and will be the best player on Baylor, but I think Thomas Robinson will win Big 12 player of the year. I expect more from Robinson even though Jones’s skill set is better and more varied.

I am by no means a big Perry Jones fan, but the fact that this site has him going #11 this year is absurd. He’s 6-11/235 with massive potential and he actually produced as a freshman playing big minutes.

His reputation has only improved since the season ended as he shocked everyone by making the mature decision to stay in school and hone his game, and he’s working as hard as possible this summer and remaining humble. Now, what’s not to like? If the extra hard work shows results there’s no reason to believe that he can’t still be the #1 pick this year, though it’ll be a dog fight. Draft Express and ESPN both have him #4 which I think is much more accurate.

Anthony Randolph huh?  Him working on his game makes me confident he’ll be better than Randolph is. They don’t even play alike anyway.

no matter i have Harrison and Anthony as a better prospects but in my eyes the only guy who can make some noise and compete for #1 position with Drummon is Perry Jones.

I love hearing this from kids who stayed in college to refine their games. He wasn’t ready last year, and instead of bolting for the money is trying to come back a more skilled and tenacious indvidual. Kudos to Perry Jones. I hope he has a great year, so more ‘projects’ or players with the ‘potential’ tag will stay in school and refine their skill sets.

The Randolph comparisons need to end. Randolph rarely shoots jumpers and right now Jones makes his living very much as a face-up guy and has a much more diverse and already more refined offensive skill set. The fact that they’re both 6-11 and sort of skinny and very athletic does not make them similar prospects. He’s more of a Bargnani/Aldridge hybrid at this point. Until we see more of him and his new game there’s really no use in making comparisons for Jones because, as cliched as this sounds, there really haven’t been many 6-11 guys like him that really became stars in the L.

The current low projection of Jones is completely based off the notion that he’s not fiery and focused. But I feel that this site has already written him off in a sense, when he still has nearly as much untapped potential as anyone not named Drummond in the country.

He showed flashes, particularly in early conference play, and I really think he can keep that play up this year (and hopefully build on it). It would be nice to see what he could do with a legitimate C (so he could showcase some of this faceup ability), but it’ll still be exciting to see him beside Q.Miller etc.

So to hear this story, assuming its accurate, is big news. Maybe the sleeping giant is finally waking…

Workethic was never the question with Perry, it’s his on-court demeanor. We’ll see if he will be a dominant player this season like he’s capable of.

He will be 20 going into next season, older than every other lottery prospect I believe, so better dominate if he expects to go top 10.
