Payton to the suns

what a trade for PHX. He fits perfectly next to Booker and Jackson. All they gave up was a second rounder can't believe Detroit couldn't match that.

This is a good pick up. He is a good fit. I hope it doesn't mean they shy away from Young or Sexton if they are on the board, although I still think Bamba should be their top target.

I agree. Against the Sixers

I agree. Against the Sixers his hair literally blocked his layup.

This makes passing on Dennis

This makes passing on Dennis Smith look so much worse unless they land Young.

I'm not sure what the Magic

I'm not sure what the Magic are thinking at this point but I think Payton could finally do well just like all the players the Magic have traded.

Payton was a restricted free

Payton was a restricted free agent that the magic had no interest in keeping. No one was going to offer a first round pick for that. A second rounder might seem like a bad haul for someone who was a lottery pick at one time, but it’s at least better than taking on a bad contract.

Payton needed a fresh start and should get an opportunity in Phoenix. We’ll see what he can do with it.

But why did they have no

But why did they have no interest in keeping him, that's what I don't understand. The guy is only 23/34, he's improved every year he's been in the league, currently shoots 52% from the floor and has a 2.42 a/t ratio. Seriously, how can a team as bad as the magic give up on a guy like that?

That front office didn't

That front office didn't draft him and decided he wasn't gonna be their guy going forward. They're either fans of Young/Sexton or have an upcoming free agent they have an interest in.

The Magic's recent draft

The Magic's recent draft picks and how they handled them doesn't read well:-

2013 - Oladipo traded in 2016 now an All Star
2014 - swapped Saric for Payton - Saric now a regular starter and Payton just moved for 2nd rounder. Gordon will be an RFA this summer
2015 - Hezonja not extended into 4th year but playing some decent ball recently
2016 - Sabonis traded in Oladipo deal and playing well for Pacers
2017 - Isaac has only played 15 games and is still a while away from playing again - could be shut down for the season.

So from 6 potential lottery picks the Magic could only have Isaac from that on their roster next season.

as a magic fan I have to

as a magic fan I have to point out, in 2014 we gave Philly saric, a 2015 2nd rounder which became Willy hernangomez, and Phillies own protected first back to them for Payton. Protections on that pick would have been top 8 protected this year, which Philly looks to clear. It was up there with Hennigans worst trades. He was a terrible GM. This trade isn' great, but we have to make changes, and we'll give our new front office the benefit of the doubt for a little while, they seem much more competent.

John Hammond drafted some

John Hammond drafted some good players at the Bucks so I'd trust him to draft better than previous Magic GM's. It almost looks like the Magic are clearing the decks to start over with the New Front Office.

....

I like it for the suns, we don't have any nba point guard, Knight lead guard done, Bledsoe drama gone, mike james scoring combo guard gone, Canaan off guard broken leg done, Ulis 4'7 125 pounder, he was my guy in college, he deserved a shot but he's only a 3rd stringer, nothing more.

There's no market for payton, no team with cap space would pay him this summer, pretty good chance the suns will only tend him his qualifying offer, making him an UFA 2019.

Cheap one year deal for an upgrade, managing the 2019 cap space.

He's tall, he plays D, hustler, he can pass, when you're the worst D in the league, 29th in steals, 27th in assists, payton ain't a bad fit.

Booker could still play the point , at the point, with a better back up, fringe starter.

Give me Bamba and Walker in the draft.

If lebron wants to join James Jones in the desert via sign and trade to be owner, GM, coach, player, it's also doable....
