So far Patrick Young of Florida has surpassed any expectations i had of him.  He is definatly an intriguing prospect; he finishes pretty well around the rim, he can defend and he is a very good rebounder.  He is also ripped, I mean he is almost at Dwight Howard’s level or Ben Wallace’s level or build.  That being said I believe that the Magic should look into him as the ultimate replacement for D12 if they are not able to land Drummond, Patri Young is a pretty good consolation prize.  So guys tell me what you think of Young so far, who his NBA comparison is, which team he fits in and what you predict his colege and NBA statistic will be.

I do like Young as a prospect, but mostly for the fact that he’s built like an ox and he has great athleticism to match. He’s not inept in the post like he once was, but he still has a long way to go offensively. And since he’s 6-8/6-9, he’d be smart to work on a mid-range game as well.

If he continues his production (double-double), I can see him as a mid-1st round prospect. That’d be a large jump considering how little he did in his freshman year.

His ceiling may be something like Emeka Okafor, minus an inch. Not the best comparison, but I can’t think of anyone else at the moment

He can’t really do anything offensively if it’s not a dunk, but he does rebound well and he is a physical defender. He should watch out for fouls, but he gives effort on the court and he definitely looks the part and is a good athlete.

He plays alot like Bismack Biyombo, except  Bismack is 6’9 or 6’10..

Young is only 6’6 ..Not the 6’9 that Florida has him listed…

I meet him during the summer and i’m 6’6 and we were the same height..That might affect his draft stock…

he definatly has an nba ready body, but he really needs to make the easy plays, which he missed a few of against ohio state.

but still he cant put up 14 p 12 r and 1 blk a game he’ll defintly get a look from mid first round onwards.

“Dude is built like an action figure……PAUSE….he made it hard for Sullinger last night.”

Except Young didn’t make it hard on Sullinger. The only time Sullinger missed a shot when guarded by Young was off an inbounds under where he caught the ball under the backboard. Most of the time he got the ball low, he was fouled by the man doubling him. Florida played a loose collapsing man as well as the occasional 3-2 and 2-3 on him. They sagged off, tried to cut off driving lanes, smother the post, and try to win a jump shooting contest. It does speak to the fact that Young isn’t anything close to an elite defender. An elite defensive player doesn’t have the coach protect him like that. If someone thinks “the Magic should look into [Young] as the ultimate replacement for D12 if they are not able to land Drummond” there be a sense from his coach that he should be able to guard Jared Sullinger one-on-one. Young ended up with a nice stat line, but that was mostly assembled after Florida fell behind big. What did anyone actually see that was impressive?

BTPH completely debunks another overvalued prospects hype. I see Young as a very useful utility player in the NBA. Sort of like an athletic Joel Anthony. He wont be shutting down any superstars, but he should at least be able to disrupt them, play solid defense, and bring great energy to the team and fans. In the present he is overhyped and in the future he will be overvalued. OKC should try to scoop him he would fit in nice there.

And by the way I forgot to mention, it wasn’t like Young was a good help defender yesterday either.

Big picture NBA, I don’t see how someone with clear limitation offensively, who isn’t really an NBA sized PF or C, and didn’t have any sort of noticeable impact on the game makes a bad team good. I see how people like him. I see how people like John Henson. I just don’t see how either of them helps make a bad team good. That is what I consider to be the bar for lottery picks.
