The Wolves are hyping Rubio like he was the most dominant player ever in Europe/Spain. They marched out over 200 employees and cheerleaders to welcome him at the airport. They took out a full page in the Star Tribune to welcome him. They almost went as far as Miami did with the big 3 last year.

Is this not the worst idea ever? What kind of pressure are they trying to put on the poor kid? If he doesn’t step in and perform at a high level right away, will fans become discontent sooner than they would without the hype?

I think this is the worst type of treatment you could put on a guy who has never played a game in the NBA yet. What is the organization thinking? If he faulters even mildly from being an all-star caliber player, the fans could revolt. This is pure stupidity. What other rookie received this type of hype from their respective organization before their rookie year started? NONE! I actually feel bad for Ricky. This type of hype could kill the kids career.

    Opinions…?

Yeah, WAY too much hype.  I mean if he is not the next Jason Kidd (with J-Will’s flair) then some people will be disappointed.  Now other point guards will be gunning for this guy.  Rose and Westbrook could really do some damage against Rubio.  Rubio’s first NBA game against Brandon Jennings might be a good one to watch, two overrated point guards renewing their rivalry.  Maybe Jennings is saving his next 50 point game for Rubio.  LOL

I think they just want him to feel wanted. He didn’t want to come to Minnesota at all. He refused for most of the time until he realized that if he was going to play in the NBA it was going to be on the Timberwolves. They know he isn’t amazing, but they do want him to be a star and treating him like one will help

Obviously you probably are not a huge T-Wolves fan.  Rubio coming to town is one of the most exciting and successful moves this franchise has had in many years.  It’s nice to be able to drink up to something positive instead of downing your sorrows.

Welcome to the T-Wolves Rubio.  Here’s to enjoying success in the league, I wish him the best.

Rubio won’t be good enough to be a good starter, but maybe an efficient backup like Sessions is.

    I’m in a no way a T wolves fan.

But I’m really excited to see Rubio play. I don’t think Euro ball was the best fit for him because they rely heavily on the 3pt shot and are unlikely to let a PG like Rubio dominate the ball.

I think Rubio will be better with the ball in his hands more, initiating the offense. It’s nice to have hype around a players amazing vision and passing abilities for once, instead of the media focus on scoring.

Say what you want about Kahn (and I talk shit about him too), but this team looks really fun to watch…. Rubio, Johnson, Beasley, Love, Randolph, #2 pick. That’s a ton of young talent.

I’m proud to be a Minnesota sports fan and I applaud what our fans did for Rubio. We really made him feel welcome in MN and showed that we support him and are going to stick behind him no matter what the critics say…and I think he genuinely Rubio liked that.

I wouldn’t call it over hyping Rubio as much as it’s just excitment for the TWolves again; and brining back an exciting NBA team to Minnesota. Minnesota is one of the best sports cities with some of the most loyal fans and we just want a winning team again; after trading KG we’ve really had nothing to get too excited about and there hasn’t been much interest in the team and the ticket sales have suffered.

I actually don’t see it as pressure as much as I see it as welcoming Rubio and feeling excitement for the Wolves again. Believe me Minnesota is one of the best NBA markets for Rubio to come to in terms of support with the fans and media; we are loyal fans without a tough media that will put too much added pressure like NY, Boston, LA….and MN is very liberal thinking and I think fans are really embrasing his Latin flare, they really like his character and charisma. I don’t think there’s pressure on him to be the next Jason Kidd but if he can help the Wolves become a winning, playoff team in the west that should be enough to win over most Wolves fans.

Minnesota has been notorious for having horrible player/management relations. They are usually the last team players want to sign with, and have a horrible reputation. The bad Garnett taste is still in the mouth of all NBA fans, as is the Rashad Mccants saga. This celebration is a positive attempt to show the league, the fans, and the players under contract for Minnesota that the Wolves are not a horrible organization. The future is bright in Minnesota, no need to hate on a team who has had a very rough run as of late.

The idea, as M-DYMES said, is that they are trumping this as a succesful moment for the franchise.

It isn’t about a psychological evaluation of how the current transpirings will affect Rubio’s future performance and fan reactions. We are talking about Minnesota, they haven’t been succesful forever. This is a new and exciting development for the franchise at the moment, regardless of Rubio’s short-term impact or even long-term projections. They are generating interest, and promoting their brand. Also, no one seemed to mention the upside. What if Rubio comes in and dominates? (However unlikely). They just build the hype and his image with it. Overall, a positive development for T-Wolves and Rubio.

First of all, he probably doesn’t understand half the things people are saying, second of all, he is probably estatic just to be here, and lastly, the T Wolves are STACKED as far as raw talent goes. If everyone reached their absolute potential peak, they would be a contender.

Rubio will help create a buzz and sell tickets similar to J-Will when he was
with the Kings. J-Will didn’t put up the best stats but he got the team going and with
Webber, Peja, and Vlade the team took off and made some great runs.

J-Will was also one of the most popular players in the league behind only Shaq, Kobe,
    Vince Carter, and AI.

Rubio with Love and probably Derrick Williams and their other guys will be fun to watch.
I would buy tickets to see that team come to Memphis and I think fans in other cities would want
to see those guys play too.

If he helps his team win then that would be great for him, the team, and the league. Sounds like
a good guy to play with. Rubio to Williams aka D-Dubya will be the new Baron to Blake alley-oops and
could be up there with Payton to Kemp.

Rubio sounds like a guy who can help his team win (like Kidd). Some guys haven’t been
able to do that. John Wall had a great year but the Wizards didn’t win any more games.

He even said in the press conference that he felt that he was worried of how he would be performing because people already have high expectations for himself. So really people are putting the hype on him but he’s not an lebron high school type of hype. But it’s really interesting because he also said, at the end of the day it’s passing and he has that special potential to pass like one of the greatest to create an easy bucket. No one is really asking him to score, just to create great looks.

I don’t really care if Rubio is the next Bob Cousy or if he is the next Sebastian Telfair. I am excited that an NBA team is taking a risk.  If you can pair top ranked prospects together, you  have to do it, Kevin Garnett is not walking through that door.  Beasley , Randolph, Love, Johnson , Rubio, #2 pick, throw spaghetti against the wall till it sticks.

They need a plan to develop these guys. It doesn’t magically happen on it’s own.  And, awesomely, pretty much all of them play similar positions.  I’d look into getting Evan Turner for Johnson package or #2, or, really, any relatively cheap, young and talented player for a 2 or 5…

I’ve decided to root for the Wolves, but with Love at the 4, Beasley and Randolph being 3s or 4s, and Wesley a clear 3…. not to mention Webster as a 3… that’s just too much for the spots on the floor.  They can keep them short term, but it’s time to start varying skillsets a bit.

If they do not, than they do not care about their players or fans. After Portland drafted Greg Oden, there was a giant gathering. It brings people together, markets the team and player, plus it is just a nice way to celebrate with a social gathering. The Heat said stupid things when they had there little fan set-up, but it was not stupid that they had it. It was something to be excited about! If you are not excited about it, that is fine. He hasn’t played a game yet, but he is a new face in town and it is nice that the fans are trying to make him feel welcome.

Players sometimes, even if they are not incredible, are really big draws for individual teams fans. If you go to a Blazer game, you will see Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge jerseys, but you will see A TON of Rudy Fernandez jerseys. Rudy is a fun player to watch, and apparently girls like him, so a lot of ladies are sporting the jersey of a guy who you could say is "overhyped". But, maybe, just say he is a fan favorite? Do not know why this was such a problem or surprise to people, but you can be a buzz kill or you can embrace the spreading of cheer to a team that could use some.
