I love this team and then I hate this team. They make smart decisions and then they make stupid decisions. They traded for Nikola Vucevic, Mo Harkless, Arron Afflalo in the Dwight Howard trade ( which Orlando clearly won ), They traded for Tobias Harris for basically nothing, and they drafted Victor Oladipo.  But they also traded away Arron Afflalo ( 20 point scorer ) for a bench player and a second round pick, overspent for veteran help ( Ben Gordon ), and more.

I kinda fell the same way with their draft picks. I love Elfrid Payton,  but I don’t love the Aaron Gordon pick. There was reports saying that the Magic was eyeing the number 1 pick in a trade for Arron Afflalo and the number 4 pick to draft Jabari Parker. I get their draft, they won’t to build a team filled with defenders that have huge upsides to be great. I don’t have a great felling about Aaron Gordon,  I fell he will be a great spark plug, but nothing special. He will be great at everything except for scoring/shooting. I feel like he’s a 6th man sparkplug. On the other side, I love Elfrid Payton talent and the ability to make his teammates better, set the tempo, and being able to defend. I fell like he’s a Gary Payton type of point guard that will be a force in this league.

This team have a nice group of young talent in Elfrid Payton, Victor Oladipo, Nikola Vucevic, Tobias Harris, Aaron Gordon, and Mo Harkless. But I don’t see a face of a franchise talent that most young teams that went through a rebuild have. And they don’t have a clear go to score/closer.

In next year draft I will recommend them to draft Jahlil Okafor or Kelly Oubre. I know they got Nikola Vucevic,  but I see Jahlil Okafor having better 2 way long term potential that can be their go to scorer. I like Kelly Oubre there too because they need a long term small forward and Kelly Oubre can shoot and have tons of potential.

This Magic team seems like a 25 win team and having a top 5 draft pick.

    Thoughts……

    Don’t sleep on him.

He’s going to score +15ppg this year, look out for him to be a big part of Orlando’s future.

yeah, it seems like this team is forming a group similar to the 12-13 nuggs’ team a few years ago with lawson, iggy, faried…a team that won by playing tough defense and creating a lot of fast breaks.

i agree on your entire post.  my 2 big take backs from the offseason were drafting aaron gordon and signing channing frye.  i’m still uncertain what position gordon plays and frye is 31 with 4 years on his contract.  i could easily see that turning into a sour note in a couple years.

depending on where they land, i like oubre or towns jr.  oubre would provide a need for perimeter shooting and could be the best scorer in this draft.  town jr. has a lot of pf skills and is a pretty smooth player.  i think he could pair with vucevic to form a poor mans’ twin towers or when they go small ball, play the center without losing any height.

I hear what your saying. I’m an avid Magic fan and feel that this is going to be a rough season for Gordon.. His J needs a ton of work, and his best attributes right now (motor, aggressiveness, athleticism etc.) help him get to the free throw line where he is a horrendous free throw shooter. Not a recipe for a great rookie year where he’ll be mostly counted on for energy.

However… I think management is putting Gordon in a great position to succeed long term. The Magic have surrounded Gordon with 3 players that compliment his weaknesses. Channing Frye is one of the best shooting bigs in the league. Tobias Harris excels at creating mismatches on offense whether he’s going against 3’s or 4’s. And don’t forget about Kyle O’ Quinn. He’s a nice low post backup who has length, shot blocking skills, defensive rebounding and range to 17 feet.

I can see the hate piling on top of Gordon as the year goes on and his weaknesses continually get exposed. But I truly think that Gordon will be an X-factor type player that the league may not have seen before due with his combination of explosiveness and intangibles, even if his offense never fully comes around.

And as a side note, I personally think Oladipo has face of the franchise potential more so than others. 30+ wins easy for this team if Vuc/Fry/Harris/Oladipo/Payton stay healthy

I disagree. This team is going to have a hard time getting 30+ wins. They have too many prospects and sometimes we hype them to the extent of forgetting they’re just raw.

    – Vucevic is decent already and he can do a little of everything.

    – Gordon is horrible offensive. I can see MKG’s offensive prowess written on his forehead.

    – Oladipo is going to be the franchise player? He can improve… but remember, he shot 32% from 3 last year. I can expect around 15-16ppg. The same goes for Fournier, who showcased a nice little 2-way game at the FIBA tournament. I can see him getting 25mpg off the bench.

    – Maybe Moe Harkless is what he is. He can defend and do a lot of hard work… but he can’t produce offensively. However, I still have faith in Harris.

    – Channing Frye is going to put good numbers at this team, but he’s going to force a lot of shots because there aren’t many other players to focus at the moment. One could envision him being a good mentor for the young guys, though.

    – Payton is going to be a great distributor, but he needs players who can score consistently. He’s not going to put the ball in the hole this season.

In conclusion, the team looks great… for the future. They definitely look like a top 5 lotto team. If they get a go-to guy next offseason (which they should have done with the 4th pick this offseason), they’ll be in the hunt for playoffs.
