Ok so i finally got a chance to check out summer league games, Ive noticed Victor Oladipo has been playing alot of point guard for Orlando…and even though he doesn’t look like a natural point guard he’s actually doing a pretty good job handling the ball. Do you guys think he could be an option at the point guard spot for the Magic going forward??? I think they are just testing his skill set seeing what he can do at higher level of competition. What do you guys think???

He isn’t a point guard. He can occasionally bring the ball up for them and he is great in the open court but he is far from a PG. They need a real PG if they want to avoid being in the lottery again. If he was guarded by a guy like Avery Bradley or Westbrook I think he would have trouble even getting his team into their offense.

People are making this out to be such a story, the Magic are doing exactly what the Heat did with Dwyane Wade. He’s no being made into a PG.

I never said he was a point guard so don’t take that out of context, i just find it interesting what they are doing with him

He’s needs work on his ball handling, what better way then having him handle the ball a lot in summer league?

…but no, they are not turning him into a point guard. They are using a low-pressure, low-risk environment in the Summer League to give him a chance to work on his handles and familiarise himself with being the ball-handler in pick & roll scenarios and half-court sets in general – all in a relatively competitive game, providing much better experience than team practice could. Will we see him at the point during the regular season? Probably, it’s not like Orlando will be a winning side either way but it certainly wont hurt to improve a great young players abilities before adding a piece like Smart/Parker/Wiggins next to him in a year’s time.

Another thing is that I kind of feel like he is exactly the right guy to do this with. What he said about “…whatever the team needs me to do…” tells me he’s the kind of guy to take this challenge with a great positive attitude and try hard to improve himself.

I think they want to see the range of his skill set see how he does with taking direction and being coached.

Agree with what’s been said on Oladipo, letting him handle the ball and facilitate at the summer league isn’t an intimidating level to walk into. He hasn’t been steller but he hasn’t looked out of his depth either (he’s looked very confident dribbling the ball), he shouldn’t be the Magic’s full-time point guard but as a second or third ball-handler, why not.

32 trips to the line in 3 games. Impressive. He’s aggressive but it’s not blind aggression. I think in the end I think that’s what put him over McLemore for the Magic. Oladipo plays with force. Even if his jumper isn’t falling he’ll still look to be aggressive and impose himself.

He really didn’t get to the line much at Indiana though

Per 36 pace adjusted was right around 5 times which is just OK. Pretty decent for someone who used about 15-16% of his teams possessions as the 3rd ball-handler. Among the SGs taken in the draft Oladipo was only behind Jamaal Franklin and Goodwin in terms of FTA/FGA.

His ability to get to the rim is really really good. He isn’t just the straight line driver people were saying, there are many times he was slicing through the defense and getting to the rim. He does need to improve his finishing at the rim though. The Tony Allen comparisons need to stop, he is closer to wade than he is to tony allen. Oladipo is worse than TA on defense but much much better on offense.

But Orlando will be happy with this pick, he will probably be the face of the franchise.
