If you watch many games on ESPN you are sure to have heard Jay Bilas complain about the increase in offensive fouls called this season. With all of the rule changes that favor offense players, I think that defensive players should be given even more of the benefit of the doubt when it comes to these calls, but the real problem lies in the penalty now for offensive fouls. Every other offensive rule violation (traveling, out of bounds, etc) results in just a loss of possesion which should be penalty enough. My solution to this problem is to eliminate the offensive foul by name only and when one of these violations occurs (illegal screen, charging, hooking, etc) the team loses possesion of the ball without the player recieving a personal foul.

Now offensive fouls do not count towards the team foul total and no free throws are taken so not counting the violation  towards the player’s total of fouls would be the only real change.

    1) This would allow the officials to call more "offensive fouls" without as much complaint from the coaches or players.

    2) As currently ruled it places too much pressure on the officials to make calls that have huge significance and are so difficult to call correctly.

There are other arguments I have but wanted to see what everyone else thought about the idea first.

Honestly I don’t like the offensive foul …. I don’t think you should get the ball for just standing still then falling … Imagine if in football if the quarterback stood straight up when he got sacked he got to redue the down. That kinda how it is in basketball you get rewarded for doing nothing

Personally I always mute Jay Bilas. If I wanted to listen to somebody complain about players/rules/coaches/referees all game I wouldn’t. It wasn’t annoying to me until someone I was watching the game with pointed out how many times he weezes on and on about something, and now I can’t help but notice and it drives me insane…. I have always thought that basketball has started getting bogged down by rules and tick tack fouls.. I’m not saying get rid of them all but a step in the right direction might be the idea you suggested in simply having a change in possesion… A lot of the fouls in the game today would be nothing 15-20 years ago… I hope the NBA doesn’t turn into the NFL with it’s "illegal contact" penalties that take away from what the game really should be.. I don’t want to watch a bunch of fairies dancing around afraid to get physical, but rather the worlds elite athletes going all out playing the game under the same rules kids play with in their backyards…

This was the first season college basketball implemented the charge semicircle. To get a charge call, the defender has to be outside of the semicircle and set.

Its seems like the Refs are looking at the defender is outside the line only without thinking about if the defender is set or not.

Agreed. I think the offense takes advantage enough of the no hand checking rules and being able to initiate contact at any time. All of those subjective calls can be killers in a close game.

This year there has been more flopping in the NBA/NCAA than I can ever remember seeing.  It’s always existed, but this year it’s shocking.  Chill is right–feet being set seems hardly an issue on half of the calls.

IMO penalties should be given to floppers.  I’m not sure about enforcement though.  Perhaps a technical shot or a fine?  I really don’t want basketball to turn into soccer in the flop category and unfortunately, it’s on its way.

I personally agree wholeheartedly with Bilas’ idea in that the charge rule is flawed. Alot of times you see a charge call when a player is driving and will go into a scoring motion and their momentum will take them into an oncoming player ready to take a charge. I think that when a player starts making that "scoring more" or "basketball move" they should be entitled to that spot before the defender. Thats tough on refs though

Whats the deal with guys getting techs for flops? Ive heard that would start being enforced and I have yet to see a technical for a guy flopping.

I agree that flopping should be reduced, but the refs need to call less defensive fouls too.

Nowadays if you drive to the basket and force contact you are going to get a foul. Take a guy like Corey Maggette. He made a career out of drawing fouls on drives to the hoop.
