well deserved but not really surprising. this award is as obvious as Durant winning MVP and Michael Carter-Williams winning ROY. ill be more surprised if 3 years in a row where in the winner of this award doesnt make the All-Defensive 1st team.

    anyways, Congradulations Noah!

I can never understand how the DPOY cannot make the all defensive team unless he was won it on a lot of 2nd choice votes or something. Anyone else have any theories on this?

The DPOY and the defensive teams are voted on by separate groups.  One is voted on by sports writers, so they obviously see different things some times.

Maybe its hard to quantify ‘DEFENSE’.  Do you reward the guys with the defensive stats (steals, blocks, even rebounding), or do you go with the ace shut down defenders, or even to the versatile team defenders that can guard multiple positions?

Usually the better defenders make the 1st or 2nd team all defense.  But, how do you pick the DPOY when factoring in all these things?  So, I can see how there would be some discrepancies between the different rankings.

It would be like voting for the OFFENSIVE Player of the Year.  Or, the 1st and 2nd team ALL OFFENSE.  You might have Durant win the OFFENSIVE Player of the Year with LeBron getting the most votes for the 1st team (can score, shoot, drive, pass, and handle the ball).  …. last year, Carmelo was the top SCORER in the league but you could have made Durant the best OFFENSIVE player with his scoring stats, shooting, and percentages, plus his improved passing, with LeBron getting his MVP vote.  Then the ALL OFFENSIVE first team could have been Durant, LeBron, Kevin Love (Mr. All Offense), Steph Curry (best long-distance bomber, great passing numbers), and Chris Paul (the alpha point guard and top assist guy), so Carmelo Anthony would fall to 2nd team All Offense even though he lead the league in scoring.  So you had the scoring leader, the MVP, and the Offensive Player of the Year going to three different guys.

Well its good to have a DPOY who no one would question. Some others might be deserving too, but Joakim Noah is clearly worthy of the award.

So true. I believe he should have been a higher runner up for the last couple of seasons but really think he always played a little bit of a bit to good offensively and beeing more of a team mvp with rose sidelined but he clearly showed us this year that he is not only the offensive anchor but also the best defensive and versatile big man whe have right now – sorry Dwight.

Noah should also get the most votes for 1st team defense this year.  So he would basically be the undisputed defender of the year along with 1st team all NBA.

Interesting how a few of the top defenders from last year fell off this year.  Last year’s DPOY Marc Gasol was injured and really wasn’t in the conversation for DPOY this year.  He might make the 2nd team all-defense, but I wouldn’t put any money on it (he almost missed it last year).  Then Tony Allen has fallen off too, and last year he got the most votes for the All Defensive teams.  I think LeBron is further down the rankings for the DPOY award than he was last year.  Tyson Chandler continues to drop off from his DPOY a couple of years back.

I would bet that three bigs make this year’s First Team: Noah (most votes and the DPOY), Roy Hibbert, and Serge Ibaka plus Chris Paul as the guard option since he lead the league in steals.  I think one wing player makes the first team with that being between LeBron and Iggy.  I think DeAndre Jordan should at least make the second team with his shot blocking skills as well as his rebounding and anchoring of the paint.  He and either LeBron/Iggy would be the two main guys on the 2nd team for me.  Maybe Dwight Howard makes the second team…  Not sure who the other couple of spots should go to…

I’ve never been a big Noah fan, but over the last two years I’ve grown to respect him a lot as a player. He’s a true leader out there on the floor. After losing Rose the last two years, you’d think that Chicago would take a step back, but instead they end up with the 5 seed in 12-13 and the 4 seed this year. Noah’s play and leadership has been crucial for Chicago and in my opinion the biggest reason for their success along with Tibs doing what he does.

    Anyways, well done Joakim! Congratulations!

Noah is a guy I could unterstand that someone doesn’t like him because he plays your team or kickes your team usually but he is the one teammates, coaches and the fans would love to have on your own team. Imagine him on one of the other playoff teams: OKC, SA, LAC, GSW, POR, HOU, DAL or MEM. Same with the east: IND, MIA, TOR, WAS, BKN, ATL or CHA. There aren’t many teams out there who wouln’t profit big time from adding him to the roster.

Jordan put up better number defensively in a stronger conference, and his team had a better record when the season ended.

I know some will say yea the clippers gave up more ppg as a team but thats not entirely Jordans fault and also the teams in the West are better than the East overall, but we can all say and agree is Jordan is a Defensive stand out and a physical and imtiatiding presence. Hence Jordan should have won MVP based off team record and actual stats.

    Jordan 13.6 reb 2.5blks 1stls    57-25 record (Played in a better conference)

    Noah   11.5 reb 1.5blks 1.2stls 48-34 record

NBA individual awards are a joke so is the all star selection which is a popularity contest

Hopefully the defensive player of the year can stop Nene from dominating next game.

Well deserved & congrats to Mr. Noah.

Noah & Bogut were tied for first place in Defense Rating, but Noah has played around 1100 more minutes this year. I knew Boguts defense has been gradually getting better but being tied for #1 is impressive. Makes you wonder how good he’d be if he wasn’t a walking injury.
