So word is out that no new notice of allegations for Roy Williams and the basketball program. This is probably the best case scenario for UNC hoops fans. So my question to the UNC homers ncballer or tarheel raven how will this play out and where do you see our program moving forward, recruiting and next season where we can be final four contenders again?

I know ncballer has a lot more inside information than me on this.  It seems like the perception around the recruiting trail is that Carolina is not the place to go if you’re a blue chip recruit looking to spend one year in college.  People say Roy doesn’t recruit the one and done guys but he has been for years now, he just doesn’t get commitments from them.  Roy hasn’t had a blue chip recruit since Harrison Barnes in 2011.  That’s basically five years without having basically a sure fire NBA guy come through the program.  With Carolina’s tradition, that’s unheard of for them.  As recently as 2010, K won his 4th title with a bunch of guys who stayed 3 and 4 years with Nolan Smith, Kyle Singler and Jon Scheyer.  His run of one and dones started the next couple years with Kyrie and Austin Rivers.  The NCAA has dragged out their investigation into Carolina hoops and it absolutely has destroyed their ability to recruit one and dones.  It seems as though the investigation is nearing its end and the basketball program most likely won’t be punished.  Carolina has decent guys coming in next year and Jalek Felton is signed for 2017.  Kevin Knox is a guy that could turn things around for Carolina.  I don’t know what the future holds for Roy because he’s getting older and his health is in question.  I’ll be very interested to hear ncballer’s take on this.

Only thing I could see somewhat affecting the basketball program is a blanket probation for all of athletics.  If you notice, upon further investigation, men’s bball and football were not named or mentioned in the NOA in regards to impermissable benefits, which was the biggest charge.  Dan Kane who is a big ABCer is beginning to see the light that punishments specific to men’s bball are not likely.  But the NCAA is a wildcard.  I do expect women’s basketball to get the hammer.

In regards to recruiting we have competitive chances with PJ Washington, Kevin Knox (he will go to UNC or Duke IMO), Jeramiah Tilmon, Nick Weatherspoon  and Mo Bamba.  I am not ready to say we lead with anyone of them except Weatherspoon, but the potential for visits and heavy interest is there.  Bamba I believe is a glove fit IMHO.  He would walk into a starting lineup in an offense that he would get a ton of touches in.  He would open the floodgates for OADs.  Think his final four will be UK, Duke, Wake and UNC.

Fellas, it’s a GDTBATH.  Huge news.

Good stuff fellas. Do you guys think Justin Jackson and Meeks will stay? I think they are just gauging as much info on their stock and not really set on leaving. Ncballer whats the scoop on Dotson and Hamilton? Both guys are shooting up and Dotson looks like abother Berry. I think without a question K success is due to being tied with USA Basketball. I wish MJ had more influence with recruiting. I guess the new generation knowd the name Michael Jordan but dont really know Michael Jordan. Maybe its irrelevant nowadays but wonder why kids arent as intrigue to attend the same school that produced the GOAT. Kevin Knox looks like a Duke lean, sigh. Ncballer also question i’ve always been meaning to ask is you is why doesnt Roy Williams put more effort into recruiting out in the west coast. For a brief period he had some success in Cali. He got Pierce, Wear twins, that pg that transferred. He even snagged Marvin from Pacific coast. That area is untapped gold mine of talent. I mean why is Roy always concentrating on the east the Virginias, Floridas?

I think Jackson at this point of his career is a 4-year player. He has no reason being drafted unless he improves his 3-point shot. Joel Berry on the other hand is due for a breakout year, expect averages of probably 16/4/5.

Hamilton is a big time UNC lean and the only reason to be concerned about Dotson is if UK gets involved and even then it would likely be a battle til the end.

In regards to your west coast question, of the non one and done prospects (Marvin) only Deon Thompson stayed.  Alex Stepheson, the Wear twins and Larry Drew all transferred out.  Stepheson was a graceful transfer, but the other 3 left very bad tastes in Roy’s mouth.  He did flirt with Ivan Rabb for a while and we had a decent shot up until NCAA rumors and negative recruiting started.

I would be stunned if Meeks stays in the draft. What could he provide an NBA team now? He has Come a long long ways from being a chunky out of shape freshman with no lift around the rim. He is a lot better now but I thought in 2 years working with Jonas all summer he’d be an absolute monster now. He still has very little lift around the rim and it just seems like he lacks the mental make-up to just go out and dominate every game. Justin has a slim chance to go at the end of the first round. Ultimately, I believe both come back.

Meeks had his sights on leaving from the start of the season.  Going to be interesting if he stays.  Conventional wisdom says he comes back, however his mind is with the NBA, though Europe or the D-league are both more likely if he decides to hire an agent.  Oddly enough, I think he is 80% gone, though it is a fluid situation.

Jackson, I truly believe is 50-50.  It will ultimatey depend on some workouts and the results thereof.  He is a huge wildcard prospect who could be drafted as high as 20 and as low as late second round.  Going to be interesting.
