According to Yahoo!’s Mark Spears, the Orlando Magic and big man Nikola Vucevic have agreed on a 4 Year, $54 Million extension.

    What does everyone think?

It doesn’t seem to make sense to give him that deal now when waiting would have only cost 1.5 million more a year. If he signed an offer sheet next year it could have at most been 4 year 60 million. Saving the difference between 13.5 and 15 per is probably not worth guaranteeing that much cash a year earlier seems odd.

That is unless the max goes up with the cap with the cap then its not that bad a deal. Like if a team could offer him a 4 year 68 million dollar deal.

I’m not positive, but I think if a team signed him to a max offer sheet and Orlando matched, he’d be getting an ascending salary, whereas by signing him to less than the max, it allows them the ability to figure out how much they want to pay him each year.  So he could get a flat rate, have his salary go down in one year to create cap space to sign other free agents, etc.  Signing him to less than a max offer gives them more flexibility.

Doesn’t surprise me at all, I think that’s a solid deal. Even if he’s never an all-star, he’s a solid foundation piece down low and still getting better. The way salaries are going, I think is on par with what other guys are getting.

I’m glad for him, I loved his game at USC and felt he was criminally overlooked in college. He averaged I believe 17 and 10 as a junior and showed a solid skill set while getting double teamed a lot. It’s funny Derrick Williams and Isaiah Thomas got all the national recognition and love in the PAC 10 that year but lesser recognized guys in Nikola vucevic and Klay Thompson were the best to come out of the conference that year for the draft.

Great move by Orlando. With Vucevic’s expected production the soonly increased max contract would not be out of the question. They have been drafting well despite public criticism on whoever they select and they are now locking up thier players to decent contracts. Im not all for the Frye contract but at least they have brought in humble veteran leadership with Frye and Ridnour both players who will not attempt to be alpha males and have lots to teach while displaying the right professionalism.

They went building with youth and now have to pay to keep them around, and they have lots of cap to use in the future so paying more for the big guy who can play isn’t a problem for them.  The Magic did win the D Howard trade, while the 76ers just have J Richardson doing nothing and the other teams don’t have anyone from the deal.

He gets a double-double and has good percentages, he is healthy, the Magic have a good piece to work with.  He gets to be the obstacle and A Gordon can come from the weak side and block shots.  They could be a good combo in the paint.

He’s clearly being overpaid, but it’s still not a bad deal. The Magic have cap space to blow, and three out of the four years of the deal will be after the new TV deal kicks in and the salary cap explodes. By then his contract will look a lot better, and he will be a better player. They also don’t have to worry about someone giving him a bigger offer in restricted free agency when the cap increases slightly this summer. If he made this deal with most teams in wouldn’t be a good move, but the Magic aren’t spending the money anywhere else, so it’s fine.

Not a bad deal at all. If you compare his deal to guys like McGee, Jordan,Favors, Sanders, 54 mil is a fair price for a 14pts-11reb guy who’s still young and developing.
