NFL DRAFT

Thoughts?

Should Carolina really take Newton? I think thts a disaster pick. He was playing in a one read system at Auburn and like many ppl say if he thinks hes going to run the ball up the gut like he did in college then his career will be shortened significantly by injuries. I dont think he is an NFL QB

Also I swear if my bears dont get Jay some protection in this draft i will lose it!

And I think Ryan Mallet will be the best qb in this draft class.... he has all the tools and he will make ppl look very very foolish for passing on him, I realize he has "off field issues" but come on now the guy is a freak, he'll be good.

Carolina needs a defensive

Carolina needs a defensive line. Clauson should improve and be a pretty good starter for them, and if not they can get one through free agency, or trade

definitely

The Broncos needed a defensive guy like Dareus or even Von Miller would be fine by me... I just couldn't believe all these S#iT happened because of that Josh McDaniels mess... The Broncos were a legit contender until he decided to shake things up and let go some of my favorite guys... It was the BIGGEST mistake made by the Broncos... I'm still angry at him up to now... I hope John Elway can turn things around man... I want them back to winning games...

I think Carolina will try to

I think Carolina will try to trade the pick, and just drop a few spots. If they don't get a trade offer they want, they will prob go Dareus or Peterson. As I 49er fan I hope Peterson falls to 7. . .If not, and Gabbert is avail, I bet they trade the pick. It will be an interesting draft with no FA prior to the draft.

I'm also a big fan of AJ Green... where do you think he'll go? Bengals could use him... or if the Browns are lucky enough, they could get him...

AJ Green I think will drop

AJ Green I think will drop out of the top 5, but I don't think he should. I can't remember the last time I've heard less about the best WR in a class. The talk of this draft is definitely the lack of confidence in the QB's. I think Peterson could be a Charles Woodson type, and Green a great WR and there is almost no talk of them it seems. . .

Carolina

Carolina got screwed by Andrew Luck not coming out...but at the same time, it's kind of karmic justice for them tanking the season, haha. I don't think it's the right choice, but I think they will take Newton. They really don't see Clausen as 'the man' going forward, and they think Newton will reinvigorate the franchise. I think they should use the pick on a defensive stud like Patrick Peterson, Marcell Dareus, or Von Miller, but they won't.

The Broncos have needs all over the D- they have their pick of the best defensive players around. I would be happy with Dareus or Peterson for them- both would be able to help instantly.

There's no way AJ Green falls out of the top 5. He'll go to Cinci, since they're desperate for a wideout.

As a Vikes fan, I'm interested to see where they'll go. I think the best thing that could have happened for the Viking's prospects in the NFC North was for Aaron Rodgers to get the Madden cover, but since that didn't happen, they'll have to settle for a high draft pick. They SHOULD take Prince Amukamara- their secondary is old and gets ripped to shreds like swiss cheese against pass-happy teams like the Pack. But, I keep hearing that they're gonna take Jake Locker at #12...not too sure how I feel about that. I don't think this is a strong QB year, and they should get a vet like McNabb/Hasselbeck/Kolb rather than waste #12 on a QB that may not be a sure thing.

AJ Green, Dareus and Peterson

AJ Green, Dareus and Peterson are the three best players in this draft. Newton at number one will not work out at all. Honestly no QB in this draft should go before 20, they just aren't that good. Wait until next year with elite QB prospects like Luck, Jones, and Barkley.

yeah

I'm sorry but Cam Newton is overexposed by the media and I think THAT is the main reason why Carolina "might" buy in the hype in taking him number 1... It's a risky pick...

Extremely risky. He has too

Extremely risky. He has too many flaws. His accuracy is average, his footwork is awful, he can't read a defense to save his life and in the Gruden interview he couldn't remember one play he ran at Auburn. Not one play! His athleticism is even overrated, he isn't that much of a better athlete then Gabbert or Locker.

@yupyup

yeah... It's definitely going to be... I am not a Newton believer though I don't hate the guy... I just think Carolina needs to focus on defense... I remember the Houston Texans selecting Mario Williams over Reggie Bush because they wanted to become a better defensive team and I think so far, he has had a much lasting career than Bush... The Panthers should do the same... Marcell Dareus is a good pick but if the do buy on that Cam Newton hype, I have NOOOOO problem with my Broncos taking Dareus at 2...lol

My Broncos anyway needed this after what that A-hole McDaniels did to my team...lol

Yeah Carolina is needs D-Line

Yeah Carolina is needs D-Line help bad. The one thing that is really bothering me now is the Julio is better AJ talk. Those people need to watch a game. Julio is the superior athlete easily, but AJ has ELITE hands, body control, ball skills and route running while still being a good athlete.

i hope locker slips all the

i hope locker slips all the way to seattle...that would be a dream come true! but i think the top 10 looks like so:

1) Carolina- Cam Newton, QB, Auburn

I dont like Clausen and neither do the Panthers, I dont think Newton will be Donovan McNabb good but the guy has a cannon and is a proven winner

2) Denver- Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama

I don't want to call this a no-brainer but it makes some pretty good sense for Denver to sure up the middle by getting this athletic big

3) Buffalo- Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M

I like Miller's upside as a pass rusher but I think in a normal draft that isn't "weak" I would see Miller towards the latter part of the lottery

4) Cincinnati- AJ Green, WR, Georgia

I think Green can step in right away and be an impact in the passing game. The only problem is, who is going to be throwing the ball to him?

5) Arizona- Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri

I like this connection. Gabbert is a solid pocket-passer who played in and won big games and would fill the huge gap at QB for zona'

6) Cleveland- Julio Jones, WR, Alabama

Love his play-making ability and could be one of the most productive rookies in the league next year

7) San Francisco- Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU

49ers are lucky this once-in-a-long time athlete/game-changer fell to them at 7

8) Tennessee- Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn

Titans struggled to stop the inside rush last year and the play-making tackle should be of use from day 1 on

9) Dallas- Tyron Smith, OT, USC

Safe pick here, Smith is a big time athlete and you know what you're going to get with a guy like him...Prince Amukamara could also be the choice at this spot

10) Washington- Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas

Mallett is a real talent and he uses his size very well. Expect the Skins to find a replacement for McNabb with this pick whether it be Mallett or Locker...However, Robert Quinn really intrigues me at this spot as well

I second esperanza on

I second esperanza on Amukamara. Newton smells like another bust in the making. Sure, he led Auburn to a national title, but he couldn't cut it at Florida, had some major character issues, and he seems like a player that is full of himself. If I were Carolina, I'd take Dareus or Peterson. They're the two best players in this draft, and I'd really love to see one of them get drafted 1st, but the NFL are idiots sometimes (hello, JaMarcus Russell and Tim Couch!), and the mantra of "you need a franchise quarterback" is kinda bone headed, as many teams have found franchise/quality QB's in later rounds. Why take a hype monster in Newton, where you could take proven commodities in Dareus and Peterson?

I bet Julio Jones will be the

I bet Julio Jones will be the better NFL receiver than Green. He has ALL the tools, and he isn't a drama queen. A comparison would be Anquan Boldin but faster than him.

Concering quartbacks, there is really no exact science to picking a quarterback. I'm sure if there were, Jay Cutler would have been picked over Matt Leinart and Vince Young, Philip Rivers would have been picked over Eli Manning, Brees would have been picked over Vick. None of these quarterbacks in this draft are surefure. I mean Blaine Gabbert is the 2nd rated quarterback, and he wasn't as near as good as Chase Daniels was at Missouri... Cam has the tools to be a good quarterback in the NFL. If he's able to make the Xs and Os transition, then he'll be fine because he's physically ready. I don't think he should go 1 though. I would go with the safest pick because there is no surefire #1 prospect, which would be a DT.

I agree ESPERANZAFLEET 69

I hope the LIONS can grab PRINCE AMUKAMARA with the 13th pick also....if not, I hope they draft the best OL available witch should be either TYRON SMITH from usc or ANTHONY CASTONZO from boston college...They also might even consider drafting defensive end DA'QUAN BOWERS witch I wouldn't be too upset about either....it's been a long time coming but anyway you cut it, I'm excited about the the future of this franchise!!!

What happened to the draft?

To me, it used to be a national holiday. Now, this three day thing just seems to not make it as cool as it used to be (even though it really was never TOO cool to begin with). Nonetheless, I love the NFL Draft much like the NBA Draft. For those Mock Draft fans, I know Dale Worthington is one of them, go to walterfootball.com, their is a contest their, I entered and am incredibly dissatisfied with my mock, but, what the heck, it is free.

To me, Patrick Peterson is the best player in this draft, and the fact that he is probably going in the 5-7 range is pretty ridiculous. I am also a big AJ Green fan, think that he was far more productive than Julio in college, even though Julio is obviously a freak as well. It could turn into Charles Rogers and Andre Johnson, but I think they will both be productive players. You never know.

Why is everyone so down on Nick Fairley? That guy is an absolute freak, he may not have ideal size, but I think his strength is beyond what a typical 291 pound players usually is. Not to mention, his quickness for his size is real. Dareus may be more of the prototype for the DT position, and obviously is much bigger in the weight department, but I do not think these statistics that mash 40 time and weight are factoring in strength. That to me is what will make Nick Fairley a beast.

I guess I understand the upside of a Cam Newton, but along with most people, I think it is a bad pick for Carolina. Believe me, I understand that Jimmy Clausen is probably never going to be a good player, and I know that Cam is a complete athletic freak, but he can not get by doing the things he did in college in the NFL. Michael Vick is the only QB I want running as even a second or third option, and Cam is not going to be a terror on the ground. He has Steve Smith still (maybe, if he is healthy), and I think Jonathan Stewart is a legit RB, but they are weak on the O-line, and their defense is awful. So, if you are really looking to rebuild, is Newton the guy to do it around? Why not draft a more sure thing to help down the line, than maybe worry about QB next year, when you will actually have QB's who will more than likely be worth choosing with a high draft pick? Newton is a major gamble, and I see almost no chance of him being the best player in this draft, which to me is what you want out of a #1 pick. Carolina is setting themselves up for failure.

That being said, here is my projected top 10 for today as of what I have on my Mock Draft:

1. Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers

2. Marcell Dareus, Denver Broncos

3. Von Miller, Buffalo Bills

4. AJ Green, Cincinnati Bengals

5. Patrick Peterson, Arizona Cardinals

6. Julio Jones, Cleveland Browns

7. Blaine Gabbert, San Francisco 49ers

8. Nick Fairley, Tennessee Titans

9. Tyron Smith, Dallas Cowboys

10. Aldon Smith, Washington Redskins

Here is my top 10 players, based on just who I think will end up being the best:

1. Patrick Peterson

2. AJ Green

3. Nick Fairley

4. Von Miller

5. Marcell Dareus

6. Julio Jones

7. Da'Quan Bowers

8. Robert Quinn

9. Prince Amukamara

10. Mike Pouncey

The thing that killed the

The thing that killed the draft is that it's on Thursday. If it was on Monday and they draft week? That would be awesome. I think Newton needs a year to study. His game is great, he could be a second coming of Big Ben, just need a year.

Patrick Peterson reminds me of Revis a little bit. I think he's going to San Francisco and is gonna be a stud.

Gabbert will be a bust

My sleeper is Terrance Doss ( WR, Indiana) and Jake Locker (QB, Washington). I think both will be stars

Jones has all the physcial tools. He is inconsistent in his routes, his hands and he lacks great ball skills. Green isn't a drama quenn either, actually the farthest from it so I don't know why you said that.

In terms of pure ability right now Fairley is probably the best player in the draft at this point, he could step in and be great, although he could also be out of the league in a few years. People are low on him because he has big bust potential and takes too many plays off and he doesn't seem like someone who cares all too much about his conditioning. He is like Haynesworth in the department.

@BKKnicksFan

It's Tandon Doss and Locker is awful.

My bad. I just knew it was Doss. I think he's a 2-3 rounder who can come in and start. I disagree about Locker, I think he (like every QB in this draft) needs a year on the bench to develop.

Doss has a chance to be very

Doss has a chance to be very good. Locker is just a poor man's Newton, with terrible accuracy. Every QB in this class would benefit from learning on the sidelines for a year or two but I can't see Locker succeeding. His senior bowl practices were among the worst ever, he threw multiple out-routes into the stands and has never been more then good measurables to me.

With Locker, I think the

With Locker, I think the upside is great. Do I think he's a top 10 pick? Nope, but I think someone like a San Fran, or a Seattle or Tennessee should move back a little bit and say, let's invest a season with this guy. Once you get him in a system, I think he could be a good QB in 2 seasons.

After Newton, I think Locker is the best choice. Gabbert was average in college, I don't see him being a star in the NFL.

Locker

I thought he was a beastly prospect, but I am going with yupyup on this one. His freshman year, the guy looked like a can't miss prospect, but while his athleticism always remained high, his ability as a QB never took that next step. He is wildly innacurrate, and that never improved over time, which has to set off warning bells. Like Cam, the guy is not going to be able to run in the NFL at a good pace, and as strong as his arm is, his decision making is questionable. Also, calling Gabbert average in college means that Luck was even less than that.

People gave him the benefit of the doubt early on, as UW was indeed awful, but this past year they were not at all that bad. It was not his receivers fault, is what I am saying, that he had such a poor completion percentage. I feel he could be taken as high as even 8, though I personally do not have him in my first round. I am hearing possibly Titans, Vikings and of course Seahawks, but I think he is a giant gamble, and I do not know if he ever turns into a viable NFL QB. At least Andrew Luck has shown he can hang out in the pocket and has brilliant accuracy, Locker has never shown that, which more than likely spells doom on the next level. I think the Rams still would have gone with Bradford last year, but whoever was going to choose Luck high dodged a bullet.

I watch Pac-10 football closely, after all I went to a Pac-10 school, and I had high hopes for Locker, but I am not sure he pans out in the NFL. As a Vikes fan, I am seriously hoping they do not take a QB at 12, as none of them are overly deserving. Hope to find a deal in free agency or through a trade once the lockout is fixed, do not gamble on a QB in the first round this year. That would be my advice to all teams in this years draft looking to take QB's with high picks. Panthers, Bills, Cardinals and maybe 49ers, I can understand the desperation, but outside of those guys, their are a number of decent options to look at once everything gets fixed.

My Final (I think) Mock Draft

Keep in mind that this is a Mock of what I actually think is going to happen, not of who I see as being the best possible selection. I know my football posts have been getting panned (though no one has seemed to actually have debated anything I have written), but I will post my final 32 pick first round I am submitting from what I have heard and from what I could see happening. Also, their will undoubtedly be trades, so keep that in mind as well before you pan it (or don't, I won't judge).

1. Cam Newton, QB

2. Von Miller, OLB

3. Marcell Dareus, DT

4. AJ Green, WR

5. Aldon Smith, DE/OLB (ugh, trusting Todd McShay, why? If this is not the pick, I will have an even deeper hatred for him than I already do)

6. Patrick Peterson, CB

7. Prince Amukamara, CB

8. Blaine Gabbert, QB

9. Nick Fairley, DT

10. Julio Jones, WR

11. Robert Quinn, DE/OLB

12. J.J. Watt, DE

13. Tyron Smith, OT

14. Corey Liuget, DT

15. Mike Pouncey, OG

16. Jake Locker, QB

17. Muhammad Wilkerson, DE/DT

18. Cameron Jordan, DE

19. Anthony Castonzo, OT

20. Ryan Kerrigan, DE

21. Nate Solder, OT

22. Gabe Carimi, OT

23. Jimmy Smith, CB

24. Da'Quan Bowers, DE (who I thought could be potentially the first pick in the draft. crazy.)

25. Andy Dalton, QB

26. Cameron Heyward, DE

27. Adrian Clayborn, DE

28. Brooks Reed, DE

29. Aaron Williams, CB

30. Phil Taylor, DT

31. Benjamin Ijalana, OT

32. Akeem Ayers, OLB

Yes, I know, it looks crazy. Yes, I am shocked I have 4 QB's going in the first round. But, the crazy thing is, at the very least two are, and I am hearing rumors of Locker being a top 16 lock. I hate having Fairley and Julio Jones as low as 9 and 10, but, crazy enough, it could happen. The Smith thing is hoping that Todd McShay actually has info on the pick and is not blowing smoke, and the 7 is hoping walterfootball is not doing the same thing. The rest I tried to improvise with the craziness that is the NFL draft. This draft is completely different from the NBA, their is really very little to compare with so many more players and variables. Some of the guys I have in the first round will more than likely be late second rounders, you really can never tell. All I know is that I would rather strive for perfection with craziness than go safe, and that Tyson Alualu was picked 10th last year when most people saw him as a second round guy (and he played pretty well too). Anything can happen, I hope my mock is good, but unfortunately, it more than likely will suck like most of the other mock drafts out there.

You have a good mock. It's just sad to see the QB's in this class though. In an average to good QB draft class these QB's would most likely be like this.

Blaine Gabbert: Top 20

Cam Newton: Top 25 (should be a 2nd rounder imo)

Jake Locker: mid 2nd (only because of physical gifts)

Ryan Mallett: (Before red flags/drugs) Top 10-15, (After red flags/drugs) 2nd-3rd round

Andy Dalton: 3rd-4th round

That's how weak this class is QB wise.

thoughts on Cam Newton: Would

thoughts on Cam Newton:

Would anyone ever consider drafting a white RB #1 overall(probably not ever), if so then why draft Cam Newton #1(black quarterbacks are very rarely successful and only one has ever won a superbowl). This might sound racist but the facts back me up that black quarterbacks just don't pan out that often.

Mike Vick, Fritz Pollard, James Harris, Rodney Peete, David Garrard, Steve McNair, Joe Gilliam, Warren Moon, Donovan McNabb, Randall Cunningham, Doug Williams, Josh Freeman are a few of QB's who suceeded

Also, let's not act as if black QB's have shorter leashes then white QB's
