Here is a NEW NBA MVP Power Poll!

    Rules: still top ten only!

Winning matters.  Not just stats. Consistency matters too.

From one week to the next, players can only fall 5 spots, so someone in the top 5 last week guarantees a spot in the top 10 the following week.

New players can only enter the poll as high as 7.

I had a little of that this week, and gave priority to guys who were in the previous MVP Power Poll.

So, only 2 new guys.  With players at 5 being a bit meh, and number 6 going to a returning player basically by default.

To refresh, here is last week’s NBA MVP Power Poll:

    1. Harden

    2. Greek Freak

    3. Oladipo

    4. LeBron

    5. Kyrie

    6. Cousins

    7. Durant

    8. CP3

    9. KAT

    10. Jimmy Butler

    NEW NBA MVP Power Poll:

    1. LeBron James. Basically ran the table, blew the doors off the table stat-wise.

    2. Kevin Durant. See above. Finished just a TAD BIT behind LeBron.

    3. Chris Paul.  Awesomes stats, and the Rockets keep rolling.  Really deserves this spot.

    4. James Harden. Finished SLIGHTLY behind CP3 for the week.

    5. Kyrie Irving. Meh stats and his Celtics lost a game.  Almost here by default.

    6. Karl Anthony-Towns. Great stats, but his team only went 1-2.

    7. Greek Freak: Plummets due to his team going zero for the week.

    8. Oladipo: Numbers came back to earth and his team went 1-2. Dropped max. 5 spots.

    9. Nikola Mirotic.  Great numbers AND the Bulls are rolling!

    10. Kevin Love. Also put up nice stats, Cavs are awesome. just behind Mirotic in stats.

    Discuss.

Looks like you’re just going by the week.  Paul has not surpassed Harden.  And Mirotic? lol.

This seems more like a Player of the Week thing than an MVP ladder

It’s a hybrid Player of the Week/Team of the Week/Loser Leave Town Steel Cage Match.

Quite frankly, there are a couple of guys, maybe 3 or 4 at the VERY TOP, then a top 5 or 6, and finally maybe 10 or so guys who could round out the top 10.

You know what? Your team sucks and you put up bad stats you are gonna FALL.

LeBron runs the table every week, yeah, he is gonna be near the top.

Harden has been super great all year, he’s near the top.

KD, well I forgot to put him in my first poll, he got in later, fell out, and now he is working his way back up.  Which he is REALLY doing in the real time NBA.

CP3 looked a bit shaky the first game of the year, and his Rockets team didn’t have complete chemistry yet.  Then he got hurt and Harden did his thing and they started winning.  NOW with CP3 back, the Rockets have a Video Game backcourt.  CP3 is balling.

A running stats MVP power poll?  Ok, maybe you DO have Harden ahead of CP3 but maybe still behind LeBron (LeBron is in Full Metal LeBron Mode and that is SCARY), with Durant close to those two guys.

Kyrie Irving has had a really, really good year with some nice stats, BUT if the C’s fall off a bit, then so will his MVP standing.  He sat out a game last week, and they lost a game, so in this ULTRA COMPETITIVE MVP race he drops a bit, although he was ranked at 5 last week, too.  Before that I think I had him a bit higher, and was surging towards a top 2 or 3 spot.

KAT and Giannis? Those guys are rolling!  Maybe you move down CP3 and move both those guys up a bit, or at least Greek Freak.

The MVP race is not so much a power poll as it is something operated by the POWER LAW.  So, top 3, means a lot more than being at 5, or 6, or 7, maybe 3 or 4 times better.  Then the 10th ranked guy is barely holding on…  and the top guy is 10 times more valuable than the guy ranked at 10 (ironically LeBron’s teammate Kevin Love).

So, is this a weekly ranking aka a Glorified Player of the Week Power Poll?  Well, sure.  Wanna win MVP? Then run the table EVERY WEEK.

After my final MVP Power Poll, what I MIGHT do is take the cumulative rank.  Then rank the guys.

So, if LeBron averages a 2.3 or something (in the top 2 or 3 all year) with Harden at a 1.7 (on the average ranked either 1 or 2) then THAT will determine my MVP for the ENTIRE SEASON.

Consistent EXCELLENCE as determined by raw stats, winning, and CONSISTENCY will determine the 2017-2018 NBA MVP — at least according to my rankings/methodology.

What do I THINK I would end up with?  Something like Harden and LeBron at 1/2, Kyrie Irving somewhere in the top 5 with Giannis, the Warriors uber-stars, the Pelicans bigly stars, and maybe some other guys CONSISTENTLY rounding out the top 10.  And, if Porzingas stays healthy he will end up with a spot in my end of the year Top Ten.

So, maybe this is more like a BCS ranking than a Coach’s Poll.

So, each game is kind of a playoff game.  No bad loss.

BECAUSE if you play your way out, it takes a while to move back up.

This week, KAT is at 6.  Ok, pretty good.  From here he can move up a maximum of 5 places next week, so he can move up to 1 OR he could drop 5 spots and totally be out of this ranking.

Then it two weeks if he gets back in then he can only move up to 7.  Week after that he can move up a max five spots to 2.  Week after that he can get to 1.  So, it might take Karl Anthony-Towns a solid MONTH to move up to the top spot IF he falls out next week.  So, not only must he play most of the games, AND put up great stats, his team ALSO needs to put up WINS.

On the flipside, Greek Freak finished the poll two weeks ago at 2.  So, he was guaranteed to safely end up in the top 10 NO MATTER WHAT because he could only drop 5 spots.  And, the Bucks went 0 FOR THE WEEK.  So, he fell to 7.  Ok, maybe that is a bit LOW, but SHOULD Giannis be ahead of LeBron, Harden, Kyrie, and maybe even Durant?  Why?

Oladipo also had negative momentum and fell from 3 to 8.  Maybe he was TOO HIGH a couple of weeks ago, and is back where he should be — maybe he should be at 10.  But, still, great stats, and his Pacers are hanging in there, AND he has been pretty consistent.

    Can’t argue there…

Love: stats, wins, great numbers last week.  So, number 10.  Why not?

Mirotic… got punched out, his team was terrible, he comes back, they win 4 in a row, and he puts up great stats.  Why SHOULDN’T he be here?

Kind of a flip side of the Mike Conley thing… where we start off strong, beat the Warriors once, and Hardenvegas TWICE, then he gets hurt, and we win TWO games without him?  Kind of a Bizarro MVP…

Yeah, probably AD, Cousins, Embiid, Ben Simmons, DeRozan, and some other guys should have been in contention this week, but who do you take out?  Are those top 5 guys?  Probably not.  Honestly, I took Mirotic and Love as the last two guys in here based on WINS.  If the Raps were on a long winning streak then DeRozan might have been at 8 instead of Mirotic.

If I tweak things from here, what I MIGHT do is drop guys in this list a maximum of 5 spots, UNLESS you finish at NUMBER ONE the previous week, then you can only move down THREE SPOTS.

Yeah, I think I will do that.

Reward a guy for finishing at the top of my MVP Power Poll if only for one week.

So, next week, LeBron will be GUARANTEED to AT LEAST be at 4.  KD will be no lower than 7. CP3 at 8 — NO MATTER WHAT.  Harden a LOCK at least 9.  I dont’ care WHAT HAPPENS with Kyrie Irving and the Celtics, Kyrie will at the very least round out the top 10.  Then ANY guy in this week’s top 5 can move up to number one next week.  KAT is sitting on the rubber band.  He can either fall totally out of next week’s MVP Power Poll OR move up all the way to NUMBER ONE.  And, after Mr. Greek’s fall, the HIGHEST he can finish in next week’s rankings is 2.

For the raw totals for the MVP race, I will PROBABLY give the number 1 guy 10 points for the week.  And, a guy in 10th place gets 1 point.  Add ’em up.  Whoever has the most points at the end of the year IS THE 2017-2018 NBA MVP.

If I make ANOTHER TWEAK it will be this: after the All Star Break, only do a TOP FIVE.  Then keep the same cumulative effect I will use next week: The top guy can only fall a maximum of 3 spots.  ANYBODY ELSE can totally fall out of the Top 5.  Guys outside last week’s Top Five can only move up to, ok, let’s say 5.  Now it is 7, but things will tighten up and CONSISTENCY will matter more than anything during the MVP horse race stretch run.  And, you can only move up a max of 3 spots each week.

So, right now, if this thing were to narrow to 5 players, LeBron, Harden, Durant, Kyrie Irving, and CP3 have the inside track.  Greek Freak is on the outside looking in.  If he is not in one week’s top 5 then it will take him three weeks to get to number 1.

Ok, another tweak:  One week’s top dog, can only fall 2 spots the next week.  The 2nd ranked guy can fall a maximum of 3 spots.  Then everyone else can fall 5 spots — that is, totally out of the Top Five.

That will help to reward CONSISTENCY.  Give the top guys the benefit of the doubt, at least for another week.

     ^^^

    You’re welcome. I guess.

So, right now before All Star Weekend, the top guy gets 10 points.  After the All Star break, the leader in my MVP Top Five Power Poll will get 5 points.

at the end of the year, I will add up the points.

This system will reward players who got a head start before the Break.  It will then punish those guys who are not quite top 5 material week in and week out.  So, guys in the top 5 will receive fewer points but the next five best players won’t receive ANY points.  So this will reward players who had a hot start, AND those who finish strong.

I would think that after the break (unless the Knicks and Pelicans rack up the wins, Sixers, too, ok, and the Thunder) that the top six players fighting for the Top Five MVP Power Poll will be LeBron, Harden, Kyrie, Steph, KD, and probably Giannis.  Then it will come back to WINS.  Consistency will be even MORE IMPORTANT down the stretch because if you fall out, it will be that much tougher to move into the top spot.
