Nets frontrunners to land Melo

It was reported on Sportscenter by Chad Ford that the Nets are the current favorites to acquire Carmelo Anthony. He said that the Nuggets would probably want Derrick Favors, expiring contracts(Murphy and Humphries), and at least one future 1st-round pick. The Knicks, Bulls, and Rockets can all offer deals that include draft picks and young talent, but the Nets have the best combination of those things.

Makes sense Houston doesn't

Makes sense

Houston doesn't like him because he doesn't have good numbers ( Morey Wise)

Sacramento knows they would lose him in FA

Chicago has Deng's contract.....Denver doesn't want that.

I feel it goes beyond just

I feel it goes beyond just where the teams are located. Melo is leaving because he wants to win, and I think the Nets would be a very good place to trade with because they would still be good. The Nets have four solid prospects in my eyes. Harris, Williams, Favors, and Lopez. If they trade for Melo two of those guys might be gone *my guess would be TWill* and they would still have a good contender. Melo with a real center, because Lopez is going nowhere, and another scorer in Murphy could make things very interesting.

The Nets cant trade Murphy And Favors and a future #1

and remain a contender...who'll play the four Melo??? They can't trade harris and Murphy because again who'll play the point well enough to be a contender??who'll start at the 4 to allow Favors to devolope??? Who be the core for the Nets...IMO if they want him wait it out...keep the picks and young core...that's what will lure a big time Free agent..not a depleted roster post trade...Harris.Williams, Morrow, Murphy, Favors and Lopez sounds like a good core to join if I'm Melo...it beats Amare,Gallo,Chandler,Randolph and Felton in NY...beats what the clipps have too IMO with Gordon and Griffin, with Kaman and Baron getting older(Aminu could still bust)...

The Nets can go a season without a legit PF. There not title contenders with Melo this season anyway.

who would be there PF next season and the year after???

why make a trade and give away a top 3 pick PF prospect and Veteran stretch 4 with rebounding skills, and future 1st rounders for a guy you can just sign outright...if they got Melo with the core they'd have next year with a resigned Murphy and other scabs wanting a ring they'd be instant title contenders...WTF are u talking about...Let him walk...wait it out and then convince him the grass is greener in New Jersey/Brooklyn...

Because the Nets could easliy sign a PF in FA next season. They could also get one in the late 1st round down the road.

i dont get why melo would

i dont get why melo would prefer this team-that almost lost the most games in the history of the game this year rather than the nuggets, who were #2 in the west two years ago and like a game-winner away for #2 last year with all those injuries, especially when the East just got a lot stronger and the West are weakening

BUT

NY is not a bad place either. Plus the hometown factor by him and wifey could play a slight role in it.

I completely agree Scarecrow.

I completely agree Scarecrow. I think that they should wait it out until 2011 free agency.

I'm not sold on Favors becoming this dominate PF and a future star but I think that he will be solid throughout his career and will be a very important key for the Nets future. Why give up a top 3 pick in Favors when he hasn't even played in a game and is oozing with potential.

The Nets will have plenty of cap space when Murphy's contract expires and who wouldn't be enticed by the Nets young talent and their big market when they move to Brooklyn. And it has been speculated that Melo's wife, LaLa, is a big part of where Carmelo chooses to go, and many people have said that he wants to go to NY, and the Nets will move to Brooklyn soon so that would be an ideal place to live.

Many people think that New Jersey will make the playoffs next season, but I don't, which means that they'll acquire another lottery pick, which means that they will keep adding young talent to their roster.

The Nets have a bright future and it will only get brighter if they sign Carmelo as a free agent and don't trade for him.

If they wait, someone will

If they wait, someone will grab him up in a trade.

I would put 100 bucks that the Clippers would. The Clippers have the best asset in ALL of this.

The 2012 1st round pick of Minnesota.

The nets will sign him if he hits FA

why trade away great young talent and picks when they can just wait it out, play the youngh guys and get another lotto talent to add to the core...all that youth plus Melo is way better than waht the Clipps,Knicks and Bulls have to offer...

Well

Everyone must be in disbelief where he is heading...but might I say that any team that gets him besides the knicks, are throwing away their pieces.

If you guys haven't seen, look up who was at Melo and LaLa's wedding, where it took place, and who were the people included in the toast.

Melo isn't just a regular NBA player like Wade/Lebron/Kobe. He's a somewhat celebrity - ALL thanks to LaLa Vasquez.

With that said.. I'm wondering if that's where Parker is headed cause of Longoria. But I'd rather much have CP3 through a trade because he's a sure shot to resign if the knicks aquire him.

Those are just my 2 cents in this Melo situation

It might be 2 1st rounders

It might be 2 1st rounders Favors, Murphy and Humphries.
If the Nets do this they'll be regretting giving Outlaw, Farmar and Petro those contracts in free agency.

As a Knicks fan I wouldn't want Mello if it meant giving up Randolph, Gallo another young player and a pick. He's not worth 20 mill and losing 2 young prospects and picks. Especially since the Knicks don't have their own pick the next 2 years anyway.

if You add Melo to Amare the young guys become less relevant, as vets will fill out the roster. Melo is the best clutch player in the NB According to stats, and definately top 10 overall. some might even say top 5. Im pretty sure you do watever you can to get those guys on your team. especially if you like to win, and want to contend for championships. You can worry about a back up PF and a spot shooter later.

yeah, i mean if you can get

yeah, i mean if you can get melo who is still entering his prime and is a top 10 player in this league, you do it and you let the role player pieces work their way out. I mean to the people saying the nets wouldnt have a pf, well murphy might not be around in another year anyways and favors is far from proven. The nets should pull the trigger in a heartbeat and figure who plays pf later. As for the knicks, melo and amare together and they have to be considered a lock for the playoffs and probably right in the mix with chicago, milwaukee and atlanta as 50 win type teams. Right now, i dont think they are a lock to make the playoffs.

i wouldnt give up favors for

i wouldnt give up favors for melo. i know it sounds crazy, but favors is a young pf with tons of potential and melo(as much as i love his game) is this eras dominque wilkins, all the scoring and highlights u could ask for but its tough for him to win with good players. i would give up twill, murphy, humphries, and outlaw, and picks for melo. but i would keep the core of favors, lopez, and harris. add melo to that and u have something. and he will be traded so nj cant just wait for him because no team will trade for him without a deal already set in stone.

orlando would be a great fit but they dont have the pieces to get him, imo. they have vince carter(expiring), daniel orton and picks(in the late 20s).

i dont think houston has the expirings needed.

nj is definately a frontrunner but i just dont know about giving up favors yet. but either way they arent a championship contender for atleast 2 years, imo. playoffs yes.

The nets would be Crazy to

The nets would be Crazy to Give up Favors for Melo. Why would you possibly give up on a player who's ceiling is next great big, and floor is starting Defensive PF and a great fit next to your franchise center. that is more then even value for the nuggets, who really drafted melo at pick 3.

If im NJ i offer Murphy, Humphries, Twill, 2 first rounders and Cash As My Starting Offer. Lopez, Favours and harris are off the board.

From now on i want to coin the Acronym "BSO" aka best sane offer. which would be the best offer of pieces a team could give up without causing isaiah like damage.

Right now i think Chicago's BSO is the one denver should take. this would be Deng,, johnson, their 2011 and 2013 picks as their starter. with Gibson and the pick charlotte owes them as trump cards

As Much as i love Melo,

As Much as i love Melo, Gambling on Favours is a safer bet.

if you are the nets and bet on Melo and he signs an extension you get maybe 4 years to win a ring. But you have No PFs and no cap space over the summer, thanks to travis outlaws 35 million dollar deal, despite playing the same position as melo, just worse. and even with Melo your team won't be close to LA, Portland or any of the other west contenders. let alone MIami. harris melo lopez isn't even close to bosh bron wade. the reason the nets were bad last year was injuries and that they couldn't play defense.

With favours best case scenario is a san Antonio twin towers thing happening, more or even if he become an average starting defensive PF. they are hard to find.

BTW if this worse case scenario plays out , and the nets dont get carmelo, they will be in prime position to land Harrison Barnes. who is younger, and might be better. but hey if you want to give away the best young piece your franchise has had in a decade, then go ahead

why is melo so special? he

why is melo so special? he had a good team in denver and they couldnt get past the lakers. im not saying dont try and get melo im just not giving denver my 19 year old big power forward that compliments my center so well for a scorer. they cant get a better point guard so u have to keep harris, lopez is going to be the backup center in the next 6 all star games, and favors is 19 and has the ability to be a better defensive version of amare stoudemire. plus, murphy and humphries expirings, with t will, and 2 firsts are a very good package.

How Many of the people who

How Many of the people who would trade Favours, thought in 2004 that emeka Okafur was better then dwight howard?

As For my best young Piece comment Here is the list of the PF's picked 2-5 in the last 20 years. since that was where favours stock was before the draft. he wasn't going lower then five.

For the purposes of this list i wont include people listed over 7ft because scouts loose their judgement when that number becomes involved, and they are more C's Anyway where favours is definately a 4.

2008 Kevin Love (4) Michael beasley (2) 2007 Al Horford (3) 2006 Bargs, Aldridge, Tyrus Thomas, Sheldon Williams 2005 N/A 2004 Dwight Howard, Emeka Okafur 2003 Chris Bosh 2002 Drew gooden. 2001 Eddy Curry 2000. Stromie Swift and Marcus fizer

No 1's who were PF's include

The list of Not included 7 footers(according to this sites measurements) includes: Pau Gasol, Tyson Chandler, Nickoloz Tskitishvil, Darko Milicic, Andrea Bargnani, hasheem thabeet

Kenyon Martin, Kwame Brown, Andrea Bargnani, blake griffin

This list proves that you will get a player who is a productive starter who uses the skills they have coming in to be effective at what they are good at, Unless they have some mental or emotional problems that get in the way. Since favours doesn't have those types of problems. He is not worth giving Up For Melo.

melo is a great player. but he is not worth Giving up the best Defensive PF prospect since Dwight Howard

jdstorm, im looking at the

jdstorm, im looking at the same list of people you just posted and come to a very different conclusion then you. Look at those names: love, beasley, horford, bargs, aldridge, thomas, williams, okafor, gooden, curry swift, fizer, chandler, thskitishvili, milicic, thabeet, martin, brown, griffin. Those names do not make me think yeah, go with the unprven big man draft pick. Bosh, gasol and howard are the only ones you might reasonably argue you might take over melo. If anything, your post screams trade favors for the proven superstar.

Lol I was thinking the exact same thing... That list works against Favors, not for him.

I'd trade Favors for Melo, a proven superstar caliber player, without thinking. I don't think Favors plays with a high enough motor. He has great size and length, but his athleticism is a little overrated in my opinion. Very raw offensively too. I'm not sold he can be as great as people think.

@ilperez Fair enough.

@ilperez

Fair enough. Everyone has their own opinions on what makes a championship team. i tend to overvalue young players, as well as chemistry and fit, as opposed to just out "talenting" an opponent.

Normally i would be super on board with melo. I still believe if detroit had taken him over darko, melo would have 5 rings by now. However i think their are several factors that complicate things and decrease his trade value.

1. His Contract. carmelo is a great player in his prime, and is being paid accordingly. to the tune of about 16 million dollars. now any team that wants him has to be able to give up 16 million dollars worth of good assets/players. yet still be good enough that Melo would sign an extension. Now once he goes there the team becomes heaps better and won't pick high enough in the draft to get another considerable talent any time soon, or If the plan is to add through free agency then it is more uncertain as the new CBA will change the rules governing this next year.

So that leaves only two types of teams being able to make an Acceptable offer to both Denver and Carmelo. without permanently screwing up their franchise a la the Knicks and alan houston, or any other team that has ever offered a bad contract. Either a young team poised to make the jump this year, and has cap flexability thanks to the large number of rookie scale deals, and is maxed out on roster spots for new players, so consolidating for a better player would be wise. The other option would be a team that operates above the cap and has 16 million or more in expendable assets. this team also can't become so much of a threat that the nuggets don't think they can beat them without a full rebuild

2. Acceptable risk. if you fit the rebuilding mould, what is carmelo's value above the replacement player you draft with a pick equally as high. Especially if you are the nets and have money to burn on resigning your guys. why consolidate when provided they develop you will never have to let go of someone for purely monetary reasons.

3. forcing A trade generally gets you less then equal value. Nobody trades equal value for a superstar, they don't have it. if they did, then they wouldn't need to be trading for it

im still working on what i think would be the best way to get melo. it probably has to be a multiple team trade

yOu don't even think twice

yOu don't even think twice about trading favors for melo. Favors is a raw ok athlete and his upside isn't that high. Melo is proven and in his prime. I
laugh at who ever said melo couldn't even get past the lakers. News flash. No one has gotten by the lakers out west or east for two years and soon to be three years
