The Nets have fired Hollins and demoted King.

Not sure why Hollins had to fall on the sword in this one.  This team was poorly constructed by King.  It all started with the trade for Deron Williams and then the subsequent trade for Joe Johnson.  Then the trade for an aging Pierce/Garnett made things worse.

Not really Hollins fault but he’s the one who got the axe and King is still with the organization.

Doesn’t make sense to me.  They should try and unload Young and Lopez for draft picks to try and completely start over.

I would love to see my Raptors make a move for Thaddeus Young. With Jarrett Jack out of the picture something based around Delon Wright and Patrick Patterson would seem fair.

Lionel Hollins being the fall guy is absolutely rediculous. I get every Nets game and follow them through the local media and I honestly believe Hollins’ coaching alone is the reason for half of their wins this season. He was overachieving with this roster. Every player knew their role on both ends and played it as well as possible. His gameplanning for specific opponents was very impressive and his rotations were balanced and well thought out. Lopez, Young, Jack, Bogdanovic, Johnson, etc. all played within themselves and AS A TEAM.

I have a friend that does media for the team and we dicussed Hollins’ job so far this season. He said his rotations were terrible and didn’t play "fast enough" and not jacking up threes was a a recipe for disaster "in this day and age". I could not disagree more. This team played with space despite only 2-3 three point shooters on the floor at a time, pace in that they are not athletic enough to beat teams in a track meet but can pick and choose their spots as high IQ veterans, and smarts in not jacking up shots and running the offense efficiently and effectively.

This is high praise for the team with the third worst record in the league but Lionel Hollins made them watchable and I actually found myself emotionally invested in this team. It was so refreshing to watch a team, despite it’s lack of talent, compete so well and play such intelligent, team oriented basketball. Under his watch, the players competed hard night in and night out and maximized the little NBA level talent on the roster. This man deserves to be an NBA head coach and if I were a team like OKC or the Clippers, I would try bringing him aboard as an assistant for the rest of the season. Jason Kidd knew this organization was a disaster and was out of the door as soon as possible. Billy King and the Russian Billionaire are totally to blame for this mess and they are just another embarrasing New York professional sports franchise.

I understand your statement and agree that Hollins probally had this team playing to its potential yet they were in the playoffs last year and this year half way through the season they are 10-27 and have the third worst record in the league. Whether or not it’s his fault makes no difference the organization is headed in a new direction and they don’t want Hollins to lead them and past failures to fog the new vision.

Hollins is a coach that coaches to win. He’s not particularly the best developmental coach in the world. So to improve a 10-27 team is not quite his main suite rather he would be able to maximize their effectiveness and if he’s done that and the team is 10-27 he needs to go the GM needs to go and the players leading the team need to go and a new combination and dynamic needs to grow within the organization.

At the very least, Hollins should have been able to finish out the season because this group/roster is build around one All-Star caliber player in Brook Lopez and role players/veterans. Their only goals for this year should be to form an identity, which they were doing, and develop any youth on the roster, which they were also doing before RHJ went down. Thomas Robinson and Shane Larkin, who is barely an NBA level player, were playable under Hollins tutelage and schemes. They also needed to win as much as possible (seems obvious) to mitigate the loss of their pick to the Celtics.

Maybe he isn’t the best "developmental" coach but that is an arbitrary term because player development is one characteristic of a good coach. Developing individual skill independent from specific team schemes and constructing a system to fit the offensive/defenseive strengths of the roster are what most good coaches/staffs do. For example, RHJ is not a skilled ballhandler and may never run a pick and roll all season but the coaching staff will still have him work extensively on his ballhandling each practice. Based on what I saw from Hollins, young and veteran players seemed better than they were playing under him. Brook has looked better than he has in a few years and Thaddeus Young is playing the best basketball of his career.

      in awhile.    Thanks for this…

I wasn’t aware of any of this and I’ve been said I don’t understand why Billy King continues to have a job in this league.  Granted, the owner forced him to make some of these disastrous moves, but he should take most of the blame.   I love the Barclays Center and the look of the Nets uniforms.   Add the fact they’re in Brooklyn, it’s not going to be hard to root for this team if/when they get their ish together.

This has nothing to do with the fact that he’s African American.  It has everything to do with the flawed reality that we believe Head Coaches are the end-all/be-all when it comes to whether a teams wins or loses.

Different sport, but just look at Mike Smith with the Falcons last year.  Thomas Dimitroff put that team together and missed on draft pick after draft pick.  Meanwhile Smith is still out of a job and TD still has his.

Coaches do make a difference, don’t get me wrong, but when a roster is poor there isn’t much you can do.

There goes my dream of the Lakers being the last team to run a gangbang on the Nets front office before Billy King was gone… Maybe they will hire Otis Smith next.

Lionel Hollins has had a poor season but he has been the fall guy. The Nets mortgaged their future for one year of PP and two years of an ageing KG. After having traded for D-Will, Johnson and Crash Wallace, the Nets seemed to have a good core and won 57 games.

Their trades cost them the likes of Favours, Lillard to name but two. When the owner baulked at the luxury tax bill they brought out D-Will and so tried to go into rebuild without owning many of their draft picks.

If they trade players away to get worse to get better it will benefit Boston effectively.

They may look to buy out Joe Johnson who will likely move to a contender next year. Thad Young might have ecent trade value and a few teams would like Brook Lopez but they would not give up a stupid amount to get them back. Boston might like Brook Lopez but they aren’t going to hand a load of picks back to Brooklyn for him.

Mark Jackson would be a decent fit for the Nets or they wait until the end of the college season and may target one of the best young college coaches available.

A team with a healthy Brook Lopez, and Thaddeus Young also having a big season, should be in the playoffs, but I don’t blame the coach as it is the GM who has gambled and spent and come up with nothing.

I thought they gave away Plumlee, starting centers are hard to find and he is a very good defender.  RHJ is a solid prospect but not sure moving Plumlee made sense.

All the big trades, didn’t work for the Nets.

Unless Durant signs there, a one percent chance there, the Nets will be bad for a while as they don’t have their picks.

reports out there saying they’re trying to lure calipari to become the coach and gm.i doubt this is the nba job he wants.

maybe adam silver puts someone in charge to takeover this team like he did the 76’ers? becuz their front office decision makers might be worst than philly.

The New York market has had TWO NBA teams for FORTY years now.  They STILL haven’t made it work.

This team needs to be in SEATTLE.

There is NO REASON to have a team in Brooklyn.

This team is in TROUBLE roster wise, and now, personnel wise.

It’s pretty much an expansion team in a mediocre market.  Even though Brooklyn is ‘uuuuge.

The Brooklyn Nets sound like a mediocre D League team.

If Coach Cal wanted a challenge then the Nets would be an interesting job for him especially if he got automony over recruitment moves too.

The Nets owner has deep pockets so could tempt Cal back to the NBA with a mega offer. But Cal is a HOF Coach, has a great gig at UK so would he want to take on a much more full time job I wonder even if he was offered "silly money". Cal must be a wealthy guy so money may not be a motivation to him.

The rumours regarding Cal are that he’d be looking for over $100 million plus deal and want to be Coach and Team President to consider a jump to the NBA. Apparently his big selling point would be former UK stars will become FA’s in due course and he can recruit them to any NBA team he joins.

The most surprising thing is how long it took to remove Billy King as GM. He’s not good at being a GM. A blind person could see his moves weren’t going to work out. Trading tons of picks for declining veterans was insane even in the moment. Now when they want to rebuild and are in line for a high pick, they won’t have their pick because they traded it away for two hall of famers clearly past their prime. I wonder how many years it will take to clean up this mess.

Billy King gets a bad rap…

He was told to mortgage the teams future by ownership. Ultimate ‘win now’ strategy.

After those trades….hes been alright considering he had nothing to work with.

What else was he meant to do. He would have got fired if he didnt make those trades.

Reason he didnt lose his job was because he wasn’t culpable.
