ND Prep's Todd Mayo commits to Marquette

ESPN's Adam Finkelstein reported earlier today that Notre Dame Prep shooting guard Todd Mayo, the younger brother of NBA star O.J. Mayo, has verbally committed to Marquette University for the fall of 2011.

"I've had a long year here at Notre Dame Prep, and while some schools are picking up interest now, Marquette has been loyal to me the entire time," Mayo, a McDonald's All-American nominee, told Finkelstein. "Their whole staff has seen me play and they all feel like I'm a great fit for the Marquette family."

Mayo had been saying for months that he would be making his commitment before or during this week's National Prep Championships on the Albertus Magnus College campus in New Haven, Conn., of which they were bounced from Wednesdauy's finals by St. Thomas More.

Finkelstein writes:

The buzz throughout the two-day tournament was that a commitment to Marquette was inevitable. Mayo even went so far as to cancel a scheduled visit to Central Florida for this weekend. But Thursday brought an offer from West Virginia, which many thought would be a big favorite if it decidedly to aggressively pursue Mayo, who is from Morgantown and plays AAU ball for the West Virginia Rush.

While a host of other high-majors including Memphis, Baylor, Oklahoma State, and Providence were all heavily involved in his recruitment, Mayo reportedly spent Thursday night and Friday morning debating between a fresh start at Marquette or returning home to West Virginia.

Ultimately, Mayo chose Marquette and called coach Buzz Williams to make his verbal commitment on Friday afternoon.

Although Todd is known as

Although Todd is known as O.J.'s lil brother, I think he may have a case for having his own identity. For starters, Todd was not highly ranked in his class off the strength of being O.J.'s brother, which other players tend to get notoriety for. I have not seen Todd play a game at all, but from what I have seen on clips is he likes to attack the basket, has a nice shot from deep, and athletic for his size.

If anyone has seen Todd play can you let me know what can we expect from him in Marquette's system & do you think he plays right away?

Just saw some pics of him.

He looks nothing like OJ.

I assume he's OJ's brother from a different mother.

Knowing Marquette, he probably won't have a huge role to start, probably gonna work his way up the ladder.
