Is it just me or does it seem like most NBA teams fill their roster with versatile wings. Your team best player might be a big or a point guard but core of the team is the wings. Look at all the top teams this year, they all have great versatile wings.

    Look at the:

    • Golden State – Klay Thompson, Harrison Barnes, and Andre Iguodala
    • Atlanta – Kyle Korver, DeMarre Carroll, Thabo Sefolosha,  and Kent Bazemore
    • Houston – James Harden, Trevor Ariza, and Corey Brewer
    • Clippers – They don’t have any
    • Memphis – Jeff Green, Tony Allen, Courtney Lee, and Vince Carter
    • San Antonio – Kawhi Leonard, Danny Green, Manu Ginobili, and Marco Belinelli
    • Cleveland – JR Smith, LeBron James, and Iman Shumpert
    • Portland – Wes Matthews, Nic Batum, Arron Afflolo, CJ McCullum, and D Wright
    • Chicago – Jimmy Butler, Mike Dunleavy, and Tony Snell
    • Dallas – They only have 2

Those are the top 10 teams in the league in terms of best record and you will see most of the teams have great wing role players, some are stars. My question is do you see in the future more teams focus on versatile wings than big man with tons of potential in the 11-20 slots in the draft?

Wings make the game a lot easier for the point guard. Just to think that Derrick Rose wouldn’t be in the position he is in now (playoffs) if it weren’t for the emergence of Jimmy Butler’s play. 90% of Rose’s nagging injuries come from taking on the role of a wing player early on in his career.

The in-between wing play is more important than the post play in the paint from a personal point of view. Not every big can extend themselves from the block to create a high percentage shot. This is where the wing position makes up for those long-rebounded shots by performing the maintenance role task with cleaning up.

Last season, Corey Brewer posted a 51-point game against his current team. If anyone were to ask 100 people prior to that, no one would conclude it to ever arise for his style of play. The effort Brewer gives the Rockets on a nightly basis by playing hard is what keeps this team afloat outside of James Harden.

What do you mean by "versatile wing"?

Offensively, Harden and Ginobili are PG’s.

Versatile wings would be SG/SF that can play both positions, do multiple things on the court, guard the 2 position, stuff like that.

True Captain L, but they aren’t a top 10 team. The OP was just listing the top 10 teams based on record, and then he realized that a lot of them have many versatile wings. The Jazz are a good team, but not a top 10 team, maybe next year but we will see.
