NBA Owner Angers Fiancee With Trade

 

The owner of a professional sports franchise has a number of responsibilities and decision to juggle on a daily basis. It’s not uncommon for the work to spill over into an owner’s home life, either. But Golden State Warriors owner Joe Lacob got himself in a mess when he signed off on the trade of star guard Monta Ellis to Milwaukee.

Ellis was traded Wednesday along with Epke Udoh and Kwame Brown to the Milwaukee Bucks for Andrew Bogut and Stephen Jackson. Trades are part of the sport and a reminder that it’s a business. A reminder that was a bit more cruel for Lacob and his fiancee, Nicole Curran. It turns out Lacob’s future wife had become friends with Ellis’ wife. And Lacob surely understands, as Ellis was a favorite player of his.

But asked after the trade about the situation, Lacob pulled no punches.

 

"My fiancee is mad at me," he said to the San Francisco Chronicle in the hallway off the court before Wednesday night’s game. "She hasn’t talked to me in two days."

Reporters didn’t believe him.

"There she is," Lacob said. "Ask her."

Curran then breezed by, looking less than pleased.

We’re not sure what the moral of the story is. Don’t get too close to your players? Don’t let your significant other get too involved in your work? Don’t be a professional sports team owner? In any case, some cold nights lay ahead for Lacob, and if he’s not careful, a star guard won’t be the only person gone from the picture.

Whoever Curran’s second-favorite Warrior is probably has a ton of job security all of the sudden.

Can she really afford to get mad at a guy who owns his own NBA team? Can’t she wait until they’re married like a normal gold digger would?
