Ok, this past week brought out some great performances by some of the top MVP candidates, as well as a fringe darkhorse MVP candidate.

Since they finished 1 and 2 the previous week, both Steph Curry and Kevin Durant made this week’s top 5.

Cousins is out for the year, but made last week’s cut.  This week though he is ELIMINATED.

Got 10 players down to 6.

Harden actually put up the best numbers overall but could only climb 3 spots.

    MVP Top 5:

    1. Giannis 36.94 (gets a bye into the MVP Final Four after the All Star Break)

    2. Kevin Durant 12.44

    3. Harden 54.33

    4. Steph Curry 10.33

    5. DeRozan 24.94

Then the one wildcard spot between Cousins (INJURED), Kyrie Irving, KAT, LeBron, and Westbrook.

Top two candidates (didn’t even check the other wild card candidates’ stats):

    LeBron: 26.87

    Westbrook: 26.3

Ok, wow, good thing I double checked the stats for Kyrie and the other guys.

Ok, yeah, Cousins is out, missed 5 straight games as the co-top dog of the medicore New Orleans Pelicans.

Cuz finished with 22.33 which was actually ahead of KAT (slightly) who finished with 22.22.

And, for the stunner, Kyrie Irving of YOUR Boston Celtics: 28.88.

KYRIE IS IN!!! As your MVP wild card pick!

LeBron is OUT!  RUSSELLMANIA is OUT!

    Recap:

    1. Giannis: 36.94

    2. Kevin Durant 12.44

    3. Harden 54.33

    4. Steph Curry 10.33

    5. DeRozan 24.94

    WILD CARD: Kyrie Irving 28.88

So, Giannis is an auto bid for the MVP Final Four.

So, the remaining 3 players will compete for the last 3 spots.

I will do the stats for the poll all the way up to the All Star Break.

Then I will give the guy in my MVP race with the best overall in the ASG 10 points added to the toal score.  All Star Game MVP gets 5 points.  Then whichever of those 6 MVP candidates gets 1 point if their team won the game.

The theory being: The All Star Game SHOULD be a showcase for the MVP stretch run.

Then after the break, my final four MVP candidates have about 7 weeks left.

Two ways to win the MVP: win 4 of those 7 weeks.

OR, if nobody wins 4 weeks, then you take whoever finished in the top spot at least ONCE in the final 7 weeks take their raw total score over the final 7 weeks divided by their average finish in those 7 weeks.

Players can rise 3 spots from one week to the next.  The previous weekly winner can only fall TWO spots the next week… ok, I guess that means 2 can only fall 2 spots, too.

I really like the 6 remaining MVP candidates.  Russ is a stat stuffer — kinda glad he is gone.  The wheels are falling off in Cleveland — glad LeBron is out.

Harden SHOULD be the front runner but he still has to make the next cut.

Kyrie and KD are right behind.  Smart money might be on KD, but Kyrie might be the people’s champ runner up MVP.

DeRozan dodged some bullets so he is hanging in there.  Biggest sleeper out there but who knows.  Show up for the next week and a half of games then show out in the ASG and he could likely make the NBA MVP Final Four.

Giannis is ALSO red hot, trailing Harden, but is TALENTED enough to close out in the last 30 games and come out with a come from behind victory — especially if the Bucks run the table (sorta) down the stretch.

What I might ALSO do is, if ANY PLAYER wins the first three weeks of the final four showdown then that player is the MVP, then it would be a three way race for second place.

Ok, what I might do, is if somebody starts out 3-3 then eliminate one of the final four candidates.  Then the 3-3 guy has to only defeat 2 guys ONE MORE time to get the MVP trophy.  So, then it would be a triple threat match.

Ok, possible comeback: one player wins the first 3 weeks.  Then a guy gets cut.  So, you are down to 3.  Then ANOTHER player wins the next 3 weeks so you have a 3-3 tie going into the final week.  Then I cut the third guy.  So, whoever wins the FINAL WEEK — even if it is only 1 game or 2 takes the MVP award.

This poll will run until (from yesterday’s start) Thursday the 12th or so, right up until the All Star Break.

Not sure how many games per team that is.  Well, anyway, players must play in at least 2 games by the Break to get a score.  The schedules are probably off anyway…

The MVP Final Four probably comes down to whoever plays in every game then having his team win every game or nearly every game until the break, then get at least 1 point for his team winning the All Star Game, preferably at least the All Star Game MVP.  If one player gets BOTH the best overall stats from the All Star Game AND the MVP award (in a win) then that player will get an extra 16 points on his average.  Can’t imagine that player missing the next cut.
