The biggest head scratcher was the bulls wolves trade. They had a star who didn’t want to leave and they traded him.  Why not keep your star and build a team around him. The next most puzzling was the bulls trading Jordan bell to warriors.  Teams in the league should never make a trade with the warriors especially when it makes them better.  Next curious trade was frank Jackson swap for Dwayne bacon.  They literally traded players to the other team that was a better fit for the original team that drafted them.  Dwayne Bacon next to jrue holiday and the presence of boogie and Anthony Davis.  Frank Jackson looks more to me like a rotation point.  While frank Jackson in Charlot could have limited Jenna walker minutes and kept him fresh.

I can see what you mean about the Bulls building a team around him, but I think the Bulls are looking to rebuild and want to do so with younger players. Since Butler is in his prime and was drafted in 2011 and a senior in that draft, (he’s now 28 turning 29 in September) he wasn’t seen as the ideal player to build around. If he was 5 or 6 years younger than he would have been kept and with his skills would have been the perfect player to build around. But now, if the Bulls had kept him and built around him he would have been 34-35 when that team was fully re-built, and his body would have been wared down and probably not the same player he is now. The Wolves got him at the right time, and the Bulls want to build a younger team around a younger star that they probably haven’t drafted yet. I too think it was a puzzling trade, but not from the viewpoit you brought up. I think it was puzzling in that the Bulls didn’t have to give up the 16th pick and they have picked up a player that had more value at 7. The Bulls would have been much better drafting Monk or Zach Collins at 7 instead of Markannen. My vote would have been Collins. The Wolves with this trade got a steal. They got the veteran that is the perfect addition to their team and he is a former Thibs stalwart, and they also got a young PF/C in Patton whom they can groom in the G-league and I think in time he could be a good player alongside Towns. But this probably won’t happen for another 2 or 3 years.

The Bulls in my opinion got a decent haul for Butler, in Lavine and Dunn. We have a bad taste in our mouth because of Dunn’s less that satisfactory rookie season and Lavine’s  ACL tear last year. But I think Dunn will actually have a nice career in the league, just not as a starting PG, to me he’s more of a backup and can be good 6th man but never a starter. I think Lavine can still turn it around next year. We don’t know how his legs post injury will hold up and therefore are grading him unfairly by saying that he will never be the player he was. Yes, Carter never looked the same after his injuries, but there have been other players in the NBA who have had ACL tears and have come back just fine. If the Bulls use him as a 2-guard next year, which is his true position, then I think they will have a nice complimentary piece to their eventual star. My only beef in this trade was drafting Markannen at 7 instead of Monk or Collins, and then giving up the 16th pick.

Thibs usually Brings his rookies along slow and makes them earn it: Point and case Jimmy B he made him earn it  by taking small steps then he eventually is ready when the time comes for him to rightfully take his spot vs other coaches who go heres 30 mins go play through your mistakes. Thibs always tries to instill good habits in his players see D-rose(MVP),Noah(Defensive player of the year),Butler(MIP), all achieve NBA awards in his watch. If Dunn has taken Thibs leasons on board he will be just fine in my Opinion and will reach his ceiling if he does…

    Everyone is like this is a head scratching move but the Bulls may have done the right thing for the following reasons;
Butler had two years left on his deal which means that the T-wolves could potentially have a P.G situation on their hands if things don’t work to Butlers liking as he may want the freedom to choose where he goes this time..

Dunn,Lavine or Lauri M one could maybe turn into a key piece in their rebuild and is a lot easier to control due to currently being on rookie deal followed by RFA vs Butler could have left for nothing…

Butler could have commanded a supermax if he made an all NBA team if I understand correctly and the Bulls may not have wanted to pay him due to the ceiling they may have seen with him as their franchise player(1st/2nd round exit)

For all we know that other teams may have not given them any youth vs what T-wolves offered or wanted to give up a pick so unless we knew what was on the table then we will never know if this fully a bad deal…

The things both sides are banking on: Bulls are banking on one of the 3 turning into a corner stone and they were high on Dunn last year so I can see why they wanted him to be in the deal..But on  positive for them they have a bigger window to work with due to current deals of players vs Butler..

Thibs is essentially banking on a) Towns,Wiggin and Butler being their version of a big 3 + working with minimal issues and b) Butler liking being under Thibs again/Seeing Thibs vision for the future and Re-upping when his deal is up..

If none of the above happens who truly won the deal?

has always held himself profesionally. I highly doubt he would pull a drama queen move like PG even IF he was unhappy. I think Butler will be happy to play for Tibs again, but even if he wasn’t, he’d still show up everyday and bust people then go home.

Winner of the Butler trade right now Wolves, in the future maybe Bulls.

Bulls offseason needs player wise: Buy-out Wade, waive Rondo, let Mirotic and MCW go.

Roster would then have Dunn, Payne, Canaan, Grant, Lavine, Valentine, Zipser, Markannen, Portis and Lopez.

Have Dunn and Payne battle it out for starting, Valentine at SG until Lavine is back, Markannen and Portis could switch or play together and Lopez is default center.

Biggest need would a SF and re-sign Felicio on cheap deal.

Any other idea’s how the Bulls could do this?

Any time a team trades a star player in his prime that team almost never comes out of the deal looking good. However, let’s wait a few years to ultimately judge this trade. The bulls got much younger, shed salary and gained flexibility moving forward and are now in a position to rebuild. They had a mismatched roster that was going nowhere whether butler was on the team or not. Now they have a chance to start fresh.

Chicago got some talent back in the deal as well and given the circumstances I’m not really sure they were going to do much better in a deal for butler at the moment. He definitely wasn’t getting a better offer from the Celtics since ainge hoards draft picks like they are going out of style. It’s unlikely the Cavs or another team would have given the bulls a better offer either.

Lavine still has a world of potential despite the acl tear, which is far from the career killer it used to be. People talked about Dunn as a potential ROY candidate going into last season, but he never got consistent pt because we all know how thibs feels about playing rookies. Markannen has a great offensive ceiling. At worst he is probably comparable to Channing frye but if he learns to defend at a competent level and expand his game could be a whole lot more than that. There are definitely some prices to work with here and they will have the opportunity to add more through the draft in the coming years. So patience will be required here for bulls fans, but this might not be as bad a deal as most seem to think.

Based on potential alone this was a good haul for the Bulls. I may have asked for 1 future 1st from the T-Wolves though.

Bulls got some good pieces in exchange for Butler. The problem is they gave up the 16th pick when they had the leverage and need all the young assets to rebuild. Giving up the 16th pick is why I think it was a bad trade for Bulls
