MalcolmxParticipantI need to get a full understanding of the rules and would like for some knowledgeable people to educate me.
To my understand I always thought you had to be one year removed from high school or turning 19 during that calender year. Now here is my question. You have plenty of high school years who will turn 19 this year if they have not already. Obviously most regular high school seniors would be 18 or turning 18 this year but in the basketball world it is common for a kid to a year older then his class. Julius Randle,Harrison Twins,Wayne Selden,Chris Walker all will turn 19 before December ends. Kasey hill will turn 20 in December of this year.
With them all being 19 or older this year would they be draft eligible is my question? Can someone fully break this down for me in its entirety?

jjbutler73ParticipantIt’s 19 AND 1 year removed from high school, not 19 or 1 year.

Velvet HoopParticipantin addition to being 19. But I’m not sure what date they use as they cut off? Draft day? Opening night? Archie Goodwin is still 18.
This is why some guys have started going overseas as opposed to entering college for that one season. Because they have to wait that year anyway, they figure they might as well get paid (above the table). Oh and probably because they didn’t have the grades too.

ph90702For all drafted players, they have to turn at least 19 years old during the calendar year. In other words, your birth year has to be 1994 or earlier. For non-international players, they must be at least one year removed from their high school class. As an example, Shabazz Muhammad and O.J. Mayo were not eligible for the NBA Draft out of high school despite being 19 years old.
So, you must be BOTH 19 years old during the calendar year of the draft AND at least one year removed from high school.

MalcolmxParticipantOkay thanks a lot people. My friends and I were having a debate about people in high school being draft eligible due to their age. Didn’t know it had to be a combination of both.

qDizzle32ParticipantUnless your an International player who did not play high school/prep school ball in the states, you have to turn 19 the year of the draft. Then for any player who did play high school in the United States, you have to at least be one year removed from high school. So no high school seniors who are already or turn 19 this year are not eligible. Also if this helps it make more sense, most people who’s birthdays are from September (Sometimes August) to December usually turn 19 the year they graduate high school unless they got held back or started kindergarten at the age of 4. With my birthday being in June and that I turned 18 the year I graduated, I was a kind of young for my class.

qDizzle32ParticipantAlso any player who turns 22 the year of the draft (All International Players born in 1991 who haven’t already declared for previous drafts) are automatically eligible for this years draft. Any International Player born in 1990 or before who never got drafted are automatically free agents so whoever offers them contracts have the right to sign that player.
