Lotto StudParticipantWould anyone happen to know, what the criteria is for determining the 6th Man off the bench?

TRC1991ParticipantA guy who can guard multiple positions and has a knack for scoring in bunches.

King CaluchaParticipantPlayers should have come off the bench for most of the regular season games. That’s it. You can have a guy playing 35 minutes, but if he doesn’t start, he’s eligible.

ExumInfernoParticipantIf this is about eligibility to win the 6th Man award, a story on NBA.com says the player just has to come off the bench more times during the season than the number of games they start.
For what makes a good 6th Man, it would seem that being unselfish and able to play different positions is the best skilset to have. Although there is another one, the player who is instant offense off the bench and scores a lot for a team that can struggle to get points.
J Crawford, B Jackson, JR Smith, instant offense types that won the award. Eddie Johnson and Ricky Pierce too. But the more versatile players, like Manu and Kukoc and Odom and Schrempf, probably helped their teams more. Of course, there were also the times of the young superstar, Kevin McHale, and the old superstar, Bill Walton, who were amazing players to bring off the bench for their team.

Lotto StudParticipantI appreciate the feedback from you all.
Now that I’ve seen the responses, I want to go more in depth since no one touched base on it.
What I initially meant was, how does one determine if a guy is the 6th Man on a team, if he does not come off the bench first each game?

Rip255I think 6th man is a misleading term. It should be called Bench Player of the Year. Granted, in most cases they’ll be coming off the bench first anyways. Not always though, for example a backup centre could come on in 2 minutes if the starting C got into foul trouble.
I think the criteria is fair in regards to starting more games on the bench than the court. Can’t be too fussy right….
As for what makes a good 6th man…I think the ability to play an important role with the starting 5, but be able to carry the second unit. Jamal Crawford and Manu Ginobli have done this perfectly.

HitsterParticipant6th Man title is very misleading, off the top of my head I recall James Harden being about 11th person to enter the game many times during his Thunder career. He was often the last player to get on court but was still their main offensive weapon off the bench.
In effect the award is for best non starter, I like Rips idea of calling it best bench player.
