My take on the Kings draft
Jay Bilas is a moron for saying the Kings were one of the losers in this draft, and comparing them to the Jailblazers from a few years ago. Nobody has a history of legal trouble, not Cousins, not Whiteside, nobody. Their supposed "red flags" are so overblown it is ridiculous. Yeah, Cousins can get a little over emotional on the court. Yeah Whiteside has a little bit of a cocky attitude--But those are 2 things that don't have to be negative.
The Kings are building a franchise the way an organization should. Start with the centerpiece (Tyreke Evans) than go big. Starting with Cousins/Landry and bring Thompson and Whiteside off the bench (future--for now dally will get whiteside's minutes). Good big men are difficult to come by. Might as well stock up on them and then pick out the ones who won't help as time goes on.
The next step is when it starts to get easy: Shooters. Shooters are a dime a dozen in the NBA... Once you got your bigs, your centerpiece, you just need to find some someone to hit the kick out-3's
Finally, you just gotta hope all the pieces mesh.
Kings have a long way to go, still, before they are playoff-bound.. But depending on free agency and how that plays out I can see them winning 35 games this season, then in 2 years if whiteside and cousins develop enough they can be playoff bound.
A+ couldn't have wished for a better draft.
last a was a typo... and apparently we cant edit posts anymore?
i concur with your anlaysis and your grade and who do you think will be our starting 2 gaurd this season
no doubt. kings were definitely the big winners of last night. the other thing is you gotta like that cousins and evans both played for coach cal and with how well players from that system transition to the nba, you'd have to believe cousins would do the same. i know there will be a lot of pressure to start cousins, but they still have delambert who is a nice compliment to landry. whiteside is all upside and is a steal in the 2nd round. i think he may have killed himself in interviews with all his talk of being so great. but with no off the court issues; i'm surprised he fell.
another team i thought did really well were the clippers. eric bledsoe is a nice gem with b.diddy's injuries and age. willie warren is a steal at 54 and everyone knows how well he played with blake griffen in the frontcourt. then, aminu fell into their laps at 8. with the money to grab a swing player, they are on track to stabilize a successful team for years.
i think these are a couple teams in the west that a couple years from making some noise.
As a UK fan, I have to be a Kings fan since we got Cousins so I'm really glad he got put in a very good situation. Couldn't be better for the Kings
They'll probably bring some veteran in on a short-term contract to hold down a spot & provide some leadership. Reddick is a guy that makes a lot of sense for them. I also expect them to be pretty active in trying to sign some of these guys that went undrafted.
And nice job on the analysis Hawesome, I couldn't agree more. Last night was a good night to be a Kings fan.
SG- Tyreke Evans
SF- Omri Casspi
PF- Carl Landry
C- Samuel Dalembert
Bench: Jason Thompson, Demarcus Cousins, Donte Greene, Francisco Garcia, Hassan Whiteside
Being also a duke fan i would love if we signed JJ to be the first guard off the bench (putting Evans at PG while JJ is on the floor). I think we still sign 2 guards before the season starts.. I would like 1 to be JJ Redick then a 2nd maybe another combo PG/SG to be the 12th man.
The only downside to this is that this may mean the end of the John Brockman era.
even with the great draft they had i'm somehow disappointed.
i'm dissapointed Kings wasn't the team that do the Hinrich Trade with the Bulls, they would made their draft day even greater than what he was, Kirk Hinrich would have be great alongside Tyreke Evans and with the #17 pick Kings would have draft Avery Bradley who also great fit alongside Evans, combine that with their front court upgrad then they might be closing the best roster for the future in the NBA , imagine this:
Kings have a nice team together and when Whiteside developes in 3 years or so, they can trade him for another top 10 pick because I doubt you want to cut into Cousins' minutes.
He's a 6'6 D.Wade...he can be a passer too...but let him drive and create from the 2 spot...They need to see if they can get a good to great point guard with all those bigs and asssets they got in Sac Town...Cuz will be be big in Sac with Evans and a New Point Guard...Beno would be a great backup IMO
It Would not have dipped that far into their cap space either...Wouldn't have went Bradley there but whoever they got would have been Great....The Kings are becoming very much like Blazers,Thunders and Bucks...T'Wolves would have been in this class but they've failed in the last 2 drafts....3 if u count Mayo for Love for when they had Jefferson....
We don't need Hinrich and his contract. There is a reason the Bulls had to give up the 17th pick just to give him away.
And Scarecrow, we may have had this conversation before I do not remember, but Beno Udrih is a very good starting PG especially next to Evans. Udrih doesn't turn the ball over and can hit the deep shots--That's what we need from a PG next to Evans. Udrih shot over 50% and had a good Assist/TO ratio and that's more than enough. He is our starting PG, we wont be getting anyone to start over him.
And I agree, Evans is not a full-time PG. However, he can, has been, and will continue to play spot minutes there. For about 10-15 minutes per game he can play point and our team wont miss a beat. That's why I say we sign a SG and not a PG ideally. For example, if we sign JJ Redick, He can spell Evans at SG.. And then he can also give Beno a break (and when he does Evans will play point for the time being).
The Kings had a great draft but it kinda made the trade for Sammy D look dumb.
and might be traded for Hinrich....Get Cuz in the starting line up day 1....Whiteside for a point guard is also a strong option...Spencer...Udrih is good...but you can't not want a guy like Collison or Lawson for Whiteside and Donte...then just try to Sign Rudy Gay or get someone else's star while they're salary dumping for Melo or Paul in a few seasons....
Been a minute since I've been on the site but as a Kings fan, after that draft, I had to come on. They had a ridiculous day, and most Kings fans are out of their skulls right now in excitement because we've had nothing to cheer about. I'm obviously no scout, but it was hard not to watch DMC last year and not love him. He had beast numbers in relatively low minutes. He's everything the Kings have NEVER had. He's not super athletic but with his size and length he doesn't really need to be.
Then to get Whiteside on top of that! He slipped because he's a project. Everyone looks at him and sees Thabeet. The thing is, and I can't believe I'm saying this, is with our size he doesn't need to come in and play for at least a year. The Dalembert trade does not look stupid at all. Cap space at the end of the year and you don't want all of your biggest guys to be rookies. Keep in mind Landry is one of the smallest 4's in the league.
I heard some people are upset they didn't draft a backup pg in the second round. Are you kidding? A backup pg vs the potential Whiteside has? Especially with all the undrafted pgs and it's not as though backup pg's are hard to come by. Hopefully they sign a shooter or Greene and Casspi step up their outside game.. if Mike Miller was the MM of a couple years ago he would be PERFECT!
I don't think at this point Lawson or Collison have proven they are any better than Udrih. I'd rather just keep Whiteside and Donte(who both are potential starters) and keep Udrih. Nor do we need Gay... We are going to give Casspi and Greene a shot at SF this season and if for some reason neither is starting material we will look for a SF next year.
And knicksfreak the main thing with gettin Dally was unloading Noicioni's contract.
With the Kings draft ...
We don't really have let Brockman go...can have what 15 roster spots ? Injuries have to be considered not just minutes alone. Also as much as I like Cousins to start .. give him time to earn minutes..
Dalembert / Cousins / Whiteside
Landry / Thompson / Brockman
Greene / Casspi
Tyreke / Garcia has played both the 3/4
Udrih / Garcia has played minutes at the point
Out: Mays / Mguire / Udoka Id like to keep..
Reddick maybe a option heck maybe Mike Miller adding another Long player.
Brockman is just to hard nosed and tough to let go... if someone gets injured at the 4 or 5 spot the insurance is necessary.
With Dalembert coming off the books & a very nice, young roster at every spot but the 3; might the Kings be a serious player for Carmelo next year (assuming Denver doesn't lock him up before he becomes a FA)?
I know it sounds a little crazy, and I wouldn't have even thought about it for a second a week ago; but now it just doesn't seem so far-fetched. He would fill the biggest hole on the team & be surrounded by quality young players. Any chance or am I just delusional from things suddenly looking up?
Very good draft. Hopefully going that late will
motivate whiteside since he has to earn his contract now during the summer instead of it being just handed to him. Big big fan of cousins who I was greatly opposed to in the beginning of the college season. Also Collins is better then the kings starting pg right now and he proved it when he was the hornets starter. They still have a long ways to go because even with Evans they weren't much better then they were the year before he got there. It will be a slow process but they are young and have time
