I loved Victor Oladipo in college and thought that he was easily the best defender and best playmaker in this years 2013 / 2014 rookie class
A great play-maker to me is someone who:
    1. When needed can use their dynamic skills to create a high percentage offensive opportunity for themselves or others
    2. dives to get loose balls
    3. when needed can get deflections, steals, and block shots on defense
    4. Crashes the boards to get difficult rebounds
    5. Take charges
    6. Is a great individual, team, rotation, and help defender
    7. Always puts himself in position to create high percentage offensive opportunities for himself and his teammates
    8. Moves well with-out the ball and cuts to certain areas on the floor that helps the offense run in an effective and efficient matter
    9. Makes the needed and/or extra pass that leads to creating a high percentage offensive opportunity for his teammates
For example Scottie Pippen, Jason Kidd, and Gary Payton were great play makers during their playing days

But what is starting to become obvious to me is that victor was a late bloomer, over-looked and underrated player who has the potential to be an excellent combo guard in the NBA and who also possesses all-star potential. What is starting to stand-out about victor to me is the fact that he’s starting to show the ability to be an excellent finisher around the rim who can use very good body control and a soft touch, a dynamic slasher & crafty ball-handler who has a lighting quick first step, a skilled passer who has the ability when focused to consistently find the open man, and a player who has the offensive footwork needed to create space and score at a high level when needed. I thought he was picked to high in the draft and was just going to be another Tony Allen type of player. I was wrong and now I believe that it is going to be fun to watch victor oladipo develop into a high level offensive player, high level play-maker, and high level defender in the NBA

So some of the main skills of a good playmaker are diving for loose balls, blocking shots and crashing the boards?? I guess Nash isn’t a decent playmaker, then? This is definitely a weird post.

I’m convinced you have no idea what the term playmaker means.

A great playmaker creates high percentage offensive opportunities for himself and his teammates. You should have put that 1st and stopped while you were ahead. The ability to take charges, dive for loose balls, crash the boards and help defence has nothing to do with being a great playmaker.

By your logic Kenneth Faried is a better playmaker than Steve Nash as he checks more of these points.

My definition of a play-maker is obviously different from your definition. When I play basketball and want to help my team win. I always challenge myself to focus on being a great play-maker.

A great playmaker to me is someone who performs game changing actions that create positive opportunities that contributes to a team’s ability to play at a high level.

      For example:

      1. Diving to get a loose ball is a game changing action that create positive opportunities that contributes to a team’s ability to play at a high level

      2. Getting deflections and steals is a game changing action that create positive opportunities that contributes to a team’s ability to play at a high level

      3. Crashing the boards to get difficult rebounds is a game changing action that create positive opportunities that contributes to a team’s ability to play at a high level

      4. Using your dynamic skills to create a high percentage offensive opportunity for yourself or others is a game changing action that create positive opportunities that contributes to a team’s ability to play at a high level

      5. Moving well with-out the ball and cutting to certain areas on the floor that helps the offense run in an effective and efficient matter is a game changing action that create positive opportunities that contributes to a team’s ability to play a high level

      6. Taking a charge and/or forcing a offensive player to commit an offensive foul is a game changing action that create positive opportunities that contributes to a team’s ability to play at a high level

      7. Making the needed and/or extra pass that leads to creating a high percentage offensive opportunity for your teammates is a game changing action that create positive opportunities that contributes to a team’s ability to play at a high level

      8. Being a great individual, team, rotation, and help defender is a game changing action that create positive opportunities that contributes to a team’s ability to play at a high level.

And thus based off my definition of a play-maker. I think that Victor Oladipo is the best play-maker with-in this year’s rookie class. And I think that Marcus Smart is the best play-maker with-in college basketball this year

I’m not going to say that Oladipo is the best playmaker from the draft right now, but nobody in college was better at attacking the rim last year than Oladipo. And nobody was better at creating more “high percentage offensive opportunities for himself” than Oladipo. Oladipo has yet to prove himself as a distributor or an efficient ball handler, but Oladipo is not a Faried-esque energy player. He is effective off-the-dribble, even if he isn’t a flashy ball handler.

Victor is looking a great prospect and has been talked about as playing some point guard in the NBA. I would define the playmaker as the person who is the team’s main ball carrier up court and looks to distribute the ball and control the tempo of the game.
