Here are the main ideas I have for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Tell me what you think

    Trades

Anderson Verejao and Ramon Sessions to Oklahoma City for Eric Maynor, Jeff Green and a 2011 1st round pick

Cleveland gets Green, who I believe is underrated at this point and could help as a starter as a SF. Maynor could be a good point guard in this league. Throw in a 1st round pick to help as well.

    – Mo Williams to Sacramento for Beno Udrih and Hassan Whiteside

Cleveland gets a young big who could grow into a decent backup (ala DeAndre Jordan) in a couple seasons and Beno to backup Maynor. Yes, you take 60 cents on the dollar but it’s all about rebuilding.

Draft (I’m using the current draft net order)

1st pick- Jared Sullinger, PF, Ohio St

22st pick (From OKC)- Klay Thompson, SG, Washington St

33rd pick- Malcolm Lee, PG/SG, UCLA

Sullinger could be a good, legit, safe pick for them. Throw in the hometown factor and they win headlines there. Thompson has quietly been a solid wing who could be a nice role player over time. Lee could be a backup in time as well.

    Free Agency

4 year/20 million- Greg Oden (Defensive big, no pressure, back home)

5 year/25 million- Aaron Affalo (Good defensive player, nice shooter)

So going into 2011, the Cavs will have Maynor-Affalo-Green-Sullinger-Oden as starters. They will also have Jamison (15 mil), Moon(3mil) and Hollins (2 mil) off the books. The team could start over and move Jamison and get something back to help the rotation off the bench

    Thoughts?

Seems like a good plan but if it will actually work is a completely different story.

Eric Maynor seems to be settling in nicely for the Thunder and i think they would rather him over Sessions as he can’t shoot, and they need shooters.

Greg Oden is apparently going to get a 8mil qualifying offer from Portland, so he’ll need to get paid more then that.

Arron Afflalo has displayed intentions of wanting to stay in Denver, and why wouldn’t he, George Karl turned him from a nobody into a starter SG with starters minutes. and with Melo unlikely to stay, he could be a major piece for Denver moving forward.

A few concerns about your Cleveland plan….

Why would the Thunder want Varejao, who is out for the season, and give up Jeff Green, Eric Maynor and a 1st round pick….? The deal is pretty much Sessions for Green, Maynor and 1st Round Pick, that doesn’t make sense to me. If Oklahoma City is looking for a defensive/banger big man for their team, why not go for Joel Pryzbilla ( I think Portland will be sellers come this trade deadline ) or Samuel Dalembert, who has said he isn’t happy in Sacramento.

Your draft is very solid and I see nothing wrong about that.

I’m pretty sure Portland is going to keep Oden because he does have that chance to be healthy and with uncertainity around Brandon Roy, I’m pretty sure they’re going to keep Oden.

    Here is an article:

    http://basketball.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/71237/20110120/blazers_expect_to_extend_qualifying_offer_to_oden/

And Oden played in Columbus, Ohio ( That’s where Ohio State University is ) not Cleveland. So I don’t he’d necessarily be back home. I believe he is from Indianapolis.

Lets just say everything worked out and that did happen, Cleveland would have the best frontcourt of a 50-plus loss team ever. Realisticly Sacramento has no need for Mo Williams (I actaully like Beno more), OKC s trying to win NOW and dont wanna make a move for Varejao, and both Afflalo and Oden seem like they arent going anywhere (even know a fresh start is exqactly what Oden needs).

I am a huge Thunder fan and I also think that Varejao is one of the most underrated players in the league. He is slightly overpaid, but he really helps his teams win. Every team needs a guy like Varejao and I would love the Thudner to get him. I really like this trade, but Varejao not being healthy really hurts this. The Thunder need Green to make a deep playoff run. I think this would have a good chance of happening if Varejao didnt get hurt.

Greg Oden is getting a qualifying offer so unless someone wants to offer him crazy money at this point hes definitely going to be staying a Blazer for now. If you want to give him a 5year -50/55 million contract youll probably get him. I know he has all the potential in the world to really help a team, but he just can’t stay healthy. BUT if someone did give him a huge contract and he turned out healthy they would like like a genious.

As for Affalo. Once all this Carmelo drama is over the nuggets are going to need someone to score the ball and it looks like Affalo is going to be paid more than 5mil per year.

Varejao is actually one of the most Overrated players in the NBA. All because he can rebound and block shots. He was playing great before his injury, but if you didn’t notice when Lebron, he sort of got lost in the shuffle and seemed very complacent. The same thing will happen in OKC if he goes there because they have both Durant and Westbrook. The Thunder should try and trade Green for Oden.

And then that Kings trade, yes the Kings need a point guard but not Mo Williams. Beno is better. He’s a better shooter, better passer, and just a better all around player. If at all costs the Kings need to keep Beno and still go for a PG. They need Irving, badly.

Good draft picks, good offseason signings, but horrible trades. They are very one-sided. You expect the Thunder to give up Green and a 1st round draft pick for Varejao and Sessions, what are you smoking?

No he’s not. Varejao is a good rebounder, he blocks shots and he’s the best defensive big man in the NBA. He’s a beast on pick and rolls in defense and is a staple for Cleveland’s defense in the LeBron years. He had the best plus/minus on the court when he played AND he’s had the fewest fouls per start since he started starting for Cleveland.

Another thing, ya’ll Utah fans crack me up. Your telling me that Granger for Milsap and AK47 is a fair deal but OKC moving Green for Varejao is a bad move?

    Seriously? GTFO

Yeah the only thing i can see as a problem is the okc trade. Not sure okc does that one but these transactions sure would turn the cavs franchise around.

As for Varejao i dont think hes overrated at all. If anything he underrated.

No way that Varejao gets traded whilst he is injured. Cleveland still have the LeBron exception to use so maybe look to take on some salary dumps and get extra picks. Jamieson becomes a very attractive trade piece as his contract roles down especially if his current form continues and might have been considered a good running mate for any team looking a Melo. I had wondered if the Knicks might consider him and offer up Curry’s expiring deal but they will surely save their cap space to make a move for Melo later in the year.

If they still own their 2011 2nd round pick then a top team may offer them a late first rounder for that as so many top teams don’t want to commit to salary and an unguaranteed top 2nd round pick may fit their needs best.

Chris Grant should maybe make a offer at around MLE to keep JJ Hickson long term this summer as he can be renewed then.

I honestly think they have to rebuild via the draft rather than by FA method and this year if you rule out Melo then is there really an FA who could hugely improve the team. There are good FA’s out there especially in the front court who could give them 20-10 but Jamieson is virtually giving them that already so is there an upside there. Also complimentary players will always look towards contenders rather than lottery teams.

Mo Williams is unlikely to opt out and next season they already have around $48 million on the cap so FA moves would be limited anyway.

One trade that did occur to me was maybe have a look at OJ Mayo who seems to be in the Memphis dog house at the moment. Memphis have so FA’s to resign so any deal invoving Cleveland’s exception may interest them and Cleveland could maybe throw in one of the Miami picks they have coming as a sweetner. I’d never say that Mayo could be Cleveland’s saviour but a change of scenery and another young face gives Coach Scott so sort of core to work with going forward alongside who they can get in the draft this summer.

They may be able to move Anthony Parker to a contender before deadline day and Jamario Moon has a nice team option for next year which could be trade bait but otherwise rebuilding could be a rather lengthy process.

Varejao is out for the year, and not going to be traded to a playoff team for assets capable of being on the floor.

Also, the Cavs have a pair of second rounders this year. They have their own as well as the Thunder’s second rounder by way of the Heat.

The Thunder’s 2nd rounder via the Heat will be fairly late in the draft. With Cleveland I just cannot see a way to rebuild unless via the draft which always depends a lot on the draft lottery. So I tend to go back to the old Red Auberbach theory of stockpiling picks so Cleveland may have to go down that route.

Of course the OKC isn’t gonna do it now. I was going from this offseason on. That’s why I added FA and the draft…
