There’s been a couple threads recently started talking about whether Kobe is an MVP candidate.  First off, its Kobe…he’s going to be an MVP candidate almost every year.  Will he win?  NO!

Why won’t he win?  Cuz the MVP has become a media popularity contest.  It doesn’t go to the MVP of the league it goes to who the media hypes up.  Its been that way for a while.  Kobe is who he is.  He should have one at least 1 more MVP, this season isn’t one of them.  MVP of the finals is what he aims for because that can’t be measured in anyother way other than performance.

Your theory that they give the MVP to the player most hyped by the media is true some of the time (like Derrick Rose in 2011), there are times when many players just have seasons that are too good to ignore.

    Examples:

Every one of Michael Jordan’s MVP seasons and pretty much every MVP from everyplayer before ’99

Tim Duncan in ’02 and ’03

Lebron James now. Just look at his hollinger. Having a PER above 30 is just ridiculous. And Kobe? While he leads the NBA in scoring, his season just isn’t quite good enough to be MVP as he’s #1 in scoring, but #17 in PER, stuck between players like Greg Monroe, Paul Millsap, "DNP-OLD" Tim Duncan, and (gasp!) Brandan Wright.

He’s an all-time great player and is amazing considering his years in the league, but he has not been great this year.  Kobe has been selfish, especially over the last couple of months.  And his horrible shooting % from everywhere show it.  His team is 3-1 without him–not a coincidence.  When he’s on the floor the other great players on his squad have less chance to step up because Kobe’s been too much of a chucker in ’12.  That people are still tooting the Kobe-MVP horn in a year when KD/LBJ are so clearly superior tells me their are way too many Kobe-biased homers out there.
