Most memorable "head scratcher" during a draft night

What is your most memorable "head scratcher" or made you say "what the hell are they doing!" during the draft night? A pick that just made you question as to whether the team had any clue of what they are doing?

Well here is mine:

2002 NBA Draft: the Clippers draft Chris Wilcox #8 overall then comeback and draft another PF at #12 Melvin Ely. Both ended up being a bust. I had no idea why they drafted 2 PF in the lottery, I understood they needed a PF but drafting 2 in the lottery made absolutely no sense to me.

2009 NBA Draft: The TWolves draft 2 PG in the top 10. Jonny Flynn and Ricky Rubio. And then they draft Ty Lawson later in the 1st round (which they ended up trading). They draft 3 PG in the 1st round and they traded away the best one...SMH.

Well Wilcox and Ely if they

Well Wilcox and Ely if they weren't busts they would have been able to play next to each other.

If you think back to last

If you think back to last June, there might have been a Knick fan or two who created a thread to pound New York for drafting Landry Fields. It is entirely possible one of the threads were titled "what the hell are they doing!" I don't think any of them would admit to it now.

Cleveland Cavaliers drafting

Cleveland Cavaliers drafting LeBron James....

Then going on the next year to draft Luke Jackson who basically played the same position as their Franchise Player.

Has to be the Hawks drafting

Has to be the Hawks drafting Marvin Williams with the 2nd pick with Chris Paul and Deron Williams sitting right there for a team needing a PG. I understand Williams had loads of potential and was a highly recruited high schooler but there are several points which make the pick absolutely idiotic. First of all the year before the Hawks had just drafted 2 SF's in the top 17 with Childress and Josh Smith both who were all rookie performers, they also had Donta Smith at SF who they felt had a ton of potential. So you are going to take a wing with 3 consecutives top 20 picks, that's ludicrous. Not to mention the Hawks also had Diaw at SF and were already prior to the draft thinking about acquiring Joe Johnson another wing. It was just an awful pick, Marvin Williams as a 6th man in college. Josh Smith was in the same recruiting class and rated just as highly yet Marvin goes top 2? It's an example of a team falling in love way too much with hype, physical ability, and that dangerous P word Potential. I know the Hawks favored Deron over CP3, just imagine a team today with Deron, Joe Johnson, Jamal Crawford, Josh Smith, and Al Horford. That would be dangerous. The Marvin Williams pick has really held back the Hawks franchise from being conteders. Of coruse because of the massive failure of a pick it led the Hawks to reach on need instead of talent by taking Shelden Williams the next year with Brandon Roy and Rudy Gay on the board.

Yep

Kahn picking 4 PG's in '09 and 3 SF's in '10 were big "WTF" moments for me.

Also, Araujo was a good one.

The Knicks selecting Renaldo Balkman was one for me too.

Bonus: for the NFL, the Raiders picking that safety in '09 who wasn't even on people's draft boards (ESPN didn't have any data on him...LOL) along with Heyward-Bey. The Raiders are like the Clippers...what is it with crappy owners in Cali?

So what do you think a team

So what do you think a team should do if they have the third pick and they need a pg, they have a starting PF and starting sf, Kyrie Irving is off the board and Perry Jones is still on the board? In hindsight its easy to say a draft pick looks dumb

Most of the picks thats being

Most of the picks thats being mentioned arent really shockers.

Araujo was drafted by the Raptors because they needed a Center, unfortunately it was a weak class for Centers that year. And Ronaldo Balkman was drafted in the high 20s, pretty much you get role players around that area.

@FireKahn I think that safety

@FireKahn

I think that safety was like 232nd ranked at his POSITION. Most insane draft pic of all time possibly. But he ran a good 40 and Al Davis loves that. Haha.

I didnt like the suns earl

I didnt like the suns earl Clark draft when Jrue Holliday was still on the board, and Dragic was unproven. I was like wtf. Jrue would fit perfectly here and I knew from the very beginning Earl Clark just would not fit it.

I have two

Frye over Bynum: I lived in Brooklyn at the time and Bynum was getting love even though he was from Jersey. I wanted him and he went one pick after.

Hill over Holiday: I LOVED Jrue Holiday and wanted him over Jordan Hill.

When Dejaun Blair and Chase

When Dejaun Blair and Chase Budinger went in the second round. Both were solid college players that had games that would translate well to the pros.

Back in '84 when the Blazers

Back in '84 when the Blazers chose Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan

Lol j/k I wasn't even born until 1990 lol.

But the biggest head scratcher would have to be, in the 2004 NBA Draft when the Jazz had the 16th pick and they chose Kirk Snyder in front of Josh Smith who went #17, JR Smith #18, Jameer Nelson #20, Kevin Martin #23, Tony Allen #25, Anderson Varejao #31, Trevor Ariza #44.

me...

2006 --- when the Bulls traded their 2nd pick LaMarcus Aldridge for the the 4th pick Tyrus Thomas... and I can never forgive the Hawks for drafting Shelden Williams at 5... Antonio Davis type of player drafted way too high over guys like Brandon Roy or even Randy Foye but most of all over Rajon Rondo

2008 --- when the Bobcats decided to draft DJ Augustin at 9 instead of a ready-made center in Brook Lopez... then they drafted Alexis Ajinca at 20 when there were plenty of NBA-ready centers available in the draft or has a better ceiling than AJinca... Ajinca is long and athletic... I get it... But his game has so much need of improvement to be taken way too early at 20...

2009 --- Knicks taking Jordan Hill and snubbing Brandon Jennings... DeJuan Blair and Chase Budinger falling into the 2nd round was a headscratcher in my eyes...

2010 --- Ekpe Udoh drafted by Warriors at 6??? wow... That's a headscratcher right there... Then Tibor Pleiss selected by the Hawks over Hassan Whiteside who has more upside IMO..

The Raptors drafting 7'3''

The Raptors drafting 7'3'' Aleksander Radojevic out of Barton County C.C. in Kansas. at #12. I was intially excited for a guy I had worked with in a BCCC basketball camp getting drafted....but although he was huge I knew he wasn't the kind of player you take in the lottery of an NBA draft.

Sene was a big head scratcher for me too, they had just drafted Petro the year before and Swift the year before...yikes

He was rail thin, and was

He was rail thin, and was money from the college 3. He just wasn't big or strong enough to bang in the NBA and at such a high pick, I could have seen a 2nd round pick. Nice guy though, Barton County CC had a string of some really good players come through there when I was in Jr. High and High School.

Ebi Ere was a flat out stud, he later transferred to Oklahoma, but he was dominant at at the Juco Level, really fun to watch.

Christian Eyenga was drafted

Christian Eyenga was drafted 30th, and he "could" end up being a pretty good rebuilding piece for the cavs. So for being drafted 30th he is turning out alright, still very raw but rapidly improving.

Hasheem Thabeet

Hasheem Thabeet...

It was no secret, everyone knew he would not be that good...........They also had Marc Gasol who i would consider a better than average starting centre. Doubts about Mike Conley were already surfacing, they could very well had gone and drafted another PG

Marc Gasol only being

Marc Gasol only being selected 48th by the Lakers in 2007 sprang to mind. Donnie Walsh has been proved right with Landry Fields but when I saw his name I honestly thought WTF is that. Atlanta with one of CP3 or Deron could have been very close to the top of the East but improvement would probably have meant no Horford in 2007.

Paul George who was seen as an SF yet Danny Grainger plays that role still doesn't really make sense to me.

2010 - Chicago has the 17th

2010 - Chicago has the 17th overall pick and desperately needs a shooting guard. Instead of drafting James Anderson from Oklahoma State they take Kevin Seraphin only to trade him for a FUTURE 2ND ROUND PICK? I was high on Anderson coming into the draft and he was exactly what the Bulls needed, unfortunately he got hurt this year so really haven't gotten a chance to see how his game translates. I really wish they had picked Anderson. Instead of drafting the guy they needed, they throw the pick away for half it's value. hmmm....

UncleBucksh0t Chicago made that deal because they didn't want to pay a 1st round pick money because they want as much cap space as possible during free agency.

UncleBuck- First off, James

UncleBuck-

First off, James Anderson would have been no better (probably worse) than the trifecta of shooting guards the Bulls have (who, admittedly arent very good), and they had already traded Hinrich and that pick to Washington. That was a done deal a day before the draft. They were thinking LBJ and Bosh, not James Anderson. And even if it didnt work out, its hard to blame them.

Hands down, the biggest head scratcher has been the past two years of Kahn. So he picked 4 PGs, then 3 SF, im guessing this year he goes 3 PF, followed by 3 SG, and then 3 C's. During that time he'll have 3 lottery picks and a bunch of first rounders and Kevin Love will probably average 20-20 at some point and this team will still be 20-62 in 4 years.
