I have friends who are friends with Thon from WA, and I posted some time ago that he is older than claimed. That’s just what I heard. I got negged like crazy for it, but I was just passing on info. It seems a lot of people are asking the question now.

Here’s a link of a recent news article in Australia with a picture of him and his HS yearbook from 2010.

    http://www.news.com.au/sport/sports-life/fresh-questions-over-thon-makers-age-emerge-amid-claims-he-graduated-high-school-in-2010/news-story/137ccec54d4337242be33fc3f5102dff

All I can say is that there have been several players, such as Mutombo, who were older than claimed. Dikembe went on to have a great career. I still think Thon has the skillset, drive and size to be an effective player, but a gamble at 10 for the Bucks. It is a good draft to gamble in though..

    Its just a conspiracy theory.

Ask your friend how a Sudanese Refugee can afford that expensive private school. He’s a Mirrabooka kid…thats a ghetto of Refugee Immigrants. If you could see the Sudanese communities in Perth like I have, you would know that they don’t pay to go to that School. They’re poorer than Aboriginal kids, who also don’t go to private schools.

He attended that College because they have vocational programs that teach English, as opposed to Public Schools that are not equipped for dealing with the specialist challenges that refugee children face. His guardian has already told the Bucks this.

There is people from my city who say that they know Thon from when his voice broke at around the same time other kids did and think he is very close to 19.

The Australian government provides programs for Migrants who need help integrating. Particularly from war-torn countries. Otherwise, ghettos like Mirrabooka get worse and worse.

Now there is every chance that Thon isn’t the age he states because he has no birth certificate. This isn’t a new allogation. But the evidence in that year book does not prove he repeated High School because he simply went there for a vocational language course that wasnt provided at Mirrabooka HS.

German Rubtov is like 22 posing as a 17 year just got drafted 1st of the NHL draft. People do crazy things for money. All comes down to what can he do for you. Jason Kidd has a vision and thon obviously fits that vision. 22 or 18 his skill set is unique.

I’ve just said that I heard that he’s older. That was well before this currently publicity. My source is pretty reliable.

I didn’t write the article, I just posted it in case anyone wanted to check it out.

I’m aware of govt settlement programs, lol  you are explaining to me, but thats ok, you were not to know that’s my job.

Bottom line is many refugees arriving on XB200 visas have no ID docs and DOBs are often recorded based solely on claims, so he may not even know exactly how old he really is himself.

Still think he’s worth a gamble on a draft pick and that he’ll eventually contribute. I just highly doubt he’s 19.

This topic has been brought up several times before and forever will be due to the fact, that there is simply ne evidence without a birth certificate. Personally I don’t think a picture from a yearbook is any evidence at all especially if things are as Hype said he went there to learn english.

But it’s not like this never happend before and won’t happen again. I know many south american football (soccer) players actually are beein older than reported since teams and most importantly agents can earn a lot more with obvious talents if they are 1 or 2 years younger, means they have more upside to european clubs who are willing to spend a lot of money for this kind of player. Most of us for sure know there has been the same conversation with Mutombo and the maybe best documented story is newly acquired Thunder player Ersan İlyasova who reportedly is 3 year older then listed as his 1987 birth year. Here some words from an turkish article from 2003:

According to a letter of protest sent by the Uzbekistan Basketball Federation to world governing body FIBA, Ilyasova is an Uzbek originally named Arsen Ilyasov. The letter claims that he has become a Turkish citizen by illegal means and without the Federation’s knowledge or permission. According to a report in Fanatik (June 7), it was done like this. On August 7 2002 Arsen Ilyasov, born in 1984, entered Turkey on an Uzbek passport but was never heard of again. On September 19 of the same year an Eskisehir resident named Semsettin Bulut applied to his local population registry claiming that he had forgotten (!) to register the birth of his son 15 years earlier and asking for this to be done. It was. The "son" was duly registered as Ersan Ilyasova and obtained Turkish ID papers on the basis of the registration. Also on this basis, Ulkerspor later obtained a playing licence for him from the Turkish Basketball Federation (TBF).

Personally I have experience with this kind of issues. When I was in 2nd and 3rd grade, we got a few new classmates from Kurdistan, in this case a part of Turkey occupied and home of the Kurish people who try to become an independent national for decades now. All of this 4 new classmates (3 boys and 1 girl) basically had no german language skills and a tough time coming to germany aside from their social and political background. Kemal and Karaca (two of those guys) were a good amount taler than the rest of us and Karaca for example started to growing a beard and his voice broke already in 4th grade. We asked them how old they really were and behind closed doors the admitted they were 3 years older then listed. The reasons for that is also obvious in this case. With basically no propper education as political refugees and no language skills at all it would be tough to for them to instantly go to 5th grade or even higher. Another thingwas the goverment help for their families. Families receive financial help for their children and if you have younger kids, you receive money for more years until they are grown up. Btw I know guys from Kasakhstan who were friends with me and when they immigrated also were older then reported too and for the same reason I already wrote. With the Syrian war ungoing and millions of people coming to europe and especially to germany due to our health and welfare system we are going through this again. There have been reports that refugees who actually have a passport (real birth date or not) burned them or tried to flush them in the toilet to register twice or get new names and passports for their kids for the above mentioned reasons.

People from war crippled countries who bolt to other countries in hope of a better life many times have nothing with them but the clothes they wear. They risk their lives on ‘boats’ and sometimes even sell their children or leave family behind to have enough money to afford the smugglers to come to italy or spain and many of them drown trying this. Can you imagine beeing so desperate to risk your life on a ‘boat’ to europe even if you know thousands before you died trying this and you can’t even swim. I had tough times in my life and right now maybe the worst of them all because of personal struggles and because I lost my best friend to cancer last year but I can’t even imagine how it is beeing one of this refugees. I just can’t.

This are just my personal experiences and have nothing to do with Thon Maker and also with his younger brother Matur who I’m sure will also be in the league one day because he has similar talent and a similar game but at 6’10" he is actually better build for this wing skills. Personally I think there is a good chance Thon is not the age he is listed but from what I’ve seen he progressed pretty well and the fact that he just a year ago or so he started growing into his body makes me believe he isn’t that much older because I’ve seen a lot of other basketball prospects exactly doing this at around 20 years of age. Maybe he is 19, maybe he is 20, maybe he is older than that, I don’t care because what can we do about it? He still is a phenomenal prospect and the skill he possesses for his size are just amazing. And then there is one thing, that not only makes me a believer in him but even more a fan of him and I want him to succeed and it’s not his incredible motor and the chip on his shoulder he is playing with. It’s his head on his shoulders. Go to youtube and watch his Bucks intruduction presser and tell me this is not a smart guy, willing to do everything he can, to grow into the best player he possibly can be!? Just like Giannis he is a smart and humble kid with incredible physical tools and in an excellent enviroment in Milwaukee. Nobody expects anything from him right now.

Oh and the fact that his agility and vertical measurements were totally off the charts for a guy his size can’t be ignored, if he is 19, 21 or whatever. I’m a fan of him right now because I just think he will do everything in his power to become great and when many people try to say he will be busting out like Anthony Randolph for example, who had similar tools, I see much much more motivation to grow into a complete player. Maybe picking him at the 10 was kind of a reach but many other teams like the Raptors for example were linked to pick him around at a similar spot. I believe the Bucks not only saw the immense talent and physical tools but also this humble, smart and hungry personality and last time they did this they went out okay with Giannis I think. This doesn’t mean he will have similar success as they obviously are different kind of players and play a different game but what else do you want from a physical freak like him who already has a better handle than most players his size ever will have and for sure is willing to improve???

I have no problem if the Money Maker is making Money now because I think he earned this up to this point.

There’s no doubt that this kid is over 19, because if you look closely at the yearbook pic in the link, you can see that he graduated with Stephen A Smith (top right corner)….. Just jokes but honestly who gives a shit. He’s in the league now. Guys can still get better at 23 and some guys that come into the league very young never advance past the D league. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens with Thon

During the draft process, especially for a kid like him I am pretty sure the medical staff of the bucks took time analysing his body and all, and their opinion and his body age matter much more than even his true age.

If your body has grown in a way where you have a 19 year old body when you are 23, lucky you. That won’t change his potential growth and his body potential going forward.

With all the medical records and analysis they put into prospects they clearly are able to know if his body is matured or not, and that’s more important that true age. That’s where potential actually is. The kid’s body probably is far enough from his prime that he is woth taking at 10, regardless of age.

Oh he’s definitely older than listed, the question is how much older.  There’s already evidence of him being placed in the 12th grade in 2010, not just pictures either.  There’s a web archived newsletter from his HS that mentions him in the 11th grade in 2009 (Miss me with that conspiracy BS, his old school was not in on a long-term conspiracy as far back as 2009).  There is an article caption of a school play that he was in from 2008 that labels him as a 10th grader.  People have corroborated his class with people who actually attended school with him in Australia and more evidence is being dug up (like pictures of him at formals and quotes from his old teachers and classmates).  Unless you think Thon was a Sudanese Doogie Howser finishing 12th grade at 13 y/o or so, he is at least 22, that’s if you give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he graduated early at 16 y/o before leaving to attend HS yet again in the States.

I have no idea why his people thought that they could get away with this with how easy it is to dig up information on the net.  Or maybe they thought that it didn’t matter once they manipulated the process and got their foot in the door.  It was already out there (SI writer I believe) before the draft that teams were dismissing him as a 1st rounder bc they believed he was older.  Maybe they did more due dilligence into his background than the Bucks did.  What recourse would the Bucks even have if he admitted it?  They’ll probably just have to hold that and hope that he becomes useful, even if he is a raw, weak 23 y/o project who looked meh vs HS kids.

Sht poat as usual hype man.

There’s evidence that establishes a timeline of Thon being in HS since 2007, but hey, maybe he’s a boy genius Sudanese refugee who started HS at age 9, graduated at 13 (there are pics of him at his graduation party) before leaving to attend HS again.  If basketball doesn’t work out he can probably look to a career in astrophysics as a fall back plan.

Ok, how do you explain the photo of his passport that shows he is 19? Personally I think that a passport is more valid than a school yearbook photo that seems to be open to interpretation. Even nbadraft.net’s twitter posted the passport photo.

OFC he has a passport that shows his legal age. What else would the Bucks have as a reference to verify his LEGAL age? As was the case with Yi, Ilyasova , Miguel Tejada, legal age does not equal biological age. That is not new information, but what is that passport based on what information/ documentation, that of a refugee from rural Sudan? The civil registration services to this day in the Sudan are, in a word, lacking. I do find it oddly coincidental that an impoverished immigrant kid with very little means of int’l travel ( the reason why you would need a passport) decides to get a passport shortly after meeting Ed Smith.

There’s also way more evidence that a yearbook photo. Like this one for example, which was time stamped and arcived by his school back in 2007.

Look in the column for year 9 birthdays and note that he was classified as a regular 9th grade student, not only an IEC student which is the vocational education that his guardian refers to when trying to "explain" what Thon was doing at that school. There is also a picture of him on his 9th grade basketball team. 2008 there’s a picture of him being congratulated by his teacher for his role in the school play. In the caption he’s labeled as a 10th grader. There is another school newsletter archived in 2009 noting his birthday as an 11th grader. We’ve all seen the year 12 yearbook photo, but there are also pictures of him attending his school’s formal and graduation party with classmates who have since been verified as being ~22-23 currently. There is a preponderance of strong evidence that points to Thon being a regular HS student in Australia. So like I said, either you believe he started his HS education at 9 years old and graduated there at 13 or you think he’s 19.

Ok, how do you explain the photo of his passport that shows he is 19? Personally I think that a passport is more valid than a school yearbook photo that seems to be open to interpretation. Even nbadraft.net’s twitter posted the passport photo.

I recall back when Serge Ibaka had similar rumors of being older than he claimed he was. He not only always looked older, but the fact that he learned from the game so much so quick was unusual of a young man.

I personally think he’s more around 30 (Serge, I mean), why? He’s supposedly 26 years old which means he should be entering the prime of his career, however as a Thunder fan I’ve watched him a lot and he seems to be regressing, slowly but continiously. That is not the trait of a 26 year old, but it is the trait of a 30 year old.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if Sam Presti was aware of his real age and shipped him out for a younger guy in Oladipo, the trade was lopsided enough as-it-is but if it turns out Ibaka is really closer to 30 then it’s even that much more of a steal.

    What do you guys think?

I’ll agree with you on this one. He looks old and his athleticism is disappearing.

Id be amazed if he could still do that free throw dunk.

The stories about overseas players who have come from countries where they may not have had their births registered have been going on for years.

Wiki now states that Yi Jianlian was born in 1984 – I’m sure when he was drafted his YOB was listed as 1987. Hoopshype had Thabeet listed as being born in 1985 not 1987 at one time too. If Greg Oden had come from a developing country imagine the hype about his true age for example.

Some people regardless of race from certain countries can look older than people of a similar age from different countries.
