MJ's biggest rival in the 90s?
Who do you see being his biggest rival?
I'm quite sure I will see 1 name to standout the most, but I would like to see what the forum comes up with.
I wasn't that old when Jordan played in his prime, so I don't recall a lot of it. But I seem to remember Reggie Miller as being Jordans biggest pest.
Part of MJ's legacy is that during the 90s he had no real rival because nobody was on his level. In terms of guys he matched up against Clyde The Glide was probably the best one, and he played quite well against Jordan from the 80s until the mid 90s. That being said MJ still had a pretty big edge on him.
There was no rival in the 90s, a guy like Olajuwon dominated 1995-1996 but was never a true rival earlier or later.
Jordan never really had a rival, but I used to love seeing him and John Starks go at it. I still remember when Starks dunked on Horrace Grant and Jordan with the left lol.
He was too dominant to have 1 rival...his biggest rival was the entire Detroit Bad Boys team! They held him back and roughed him up for a little bit...until he dominated them like everyone else
Back then it was more of a team rival Chicago had, New York, Detroit, LA, Indiana also don't forget Jordan vs Bird they even had a video game
Thomas and the Bad Boys teams of Detroit for the late 80's real early 90's. Then I feel it became a rivalry between Jordan and Ewing's Knicks. Clyde Drexler was always in Jordan's shadow and trying to prove he belonged in the conversation with Mike so maybe thats another one
Drexler might be the next best thing after MJ back then but there haven't been so many matches with both teams as with the eastern conference teams. Reggie is my take here, he was fantastic in his prime and and a relentless worker, runner and of course shooter. John Starks played always at his best when he played MJs Bulls. I think Jordan himself said that Dumars defended him the best and I know MJ had some respect for Mitch Richmond too.
He had 6 championships in the 90's... he had no rival
Legend has it that Len Bias was supposed to be his rival throughout the 90s
Len Bias was clearly a forward and I wouldn't but his name here but this doesn't mean this was just a terrible and sad story. Best player never made it to the NBA not named Oscar Schmidt.
Kobe is a guard and LeBron is a forward and they nearly have a 10 year rivalry. Since about '05, everybody has been waiting for them to meet in the Finals.
Hell, in the last 5 years, Kobe has 2 titles and LeBron has 2 titles.
You think Kobe and LeBron have had a rivalry?
They've never played in one meaningful game vs each other and they've only gone "head to head" in 19 regular season games.
Can't call that a rivalry.
Not to mention Lebron has spanked Kobes team in the vast majority of those head to heads ;)
Honestly, in the last 10 years, has there been a more hoped-for matchup in the Finals than the Cavaliers/Lakers or Heat/Lakers?
Starks and Reggie were the 2 funnest matchups. But the wind position didn't have as many stars in jordans time. Lebron, Kobe, wade, iverson, tmac would have all given fits.
Because Rival there was no rival at all but there where great matchups he had against some players like
Clyde Drexler- the finals, actually the media back in the days where talking about a rivalry but i don't think so
Joe Dumars- Tough Defender
Mitch Richmond- Jordan said he was a tough player to defend and he was actually a complete scorer
but in terms of show and amazment for me the best games where Nique vs MJ
if you check the BBall Reference Jordan beat every player SF or SG in scoring with a great diference but with Nique was not like that
they played against each other 45 times, 17 times was in the 90's... 14 wins for Jordan their last game was in 96... MJ scored 35 pts Nique scored 25 pts
in 93 playoff time MJ vs Nique the bulls Sweep the Hawks 3-0
MJ- 52 fg%, 46 3pt%, 88 ft%, 6.7 rpg, 4.3 apg, 1.7 spg, 1.7 bpg 1.3 topg, 34.3 ppg
Nique- 42 fg% 25 3pt% 76 ft% 5.3 rpg, 3.0 apg, 1.0 spg, 0.3 bpg 3.3 topg, 30.0 ppg
not much of a difference, the only player i saw that can say hey i beat Jordan is Bird 17w-11L but in the 90's it's a different story Bird lost 7 games and only won 2, in the playoffs Bird is 6-0 in wins but never played against MJ in the 90's Playoff wise
