What do you guys think about Mitch McGary? His back problems have been well documented, but if he was to overcome them I think he’d be a perfect back-up bigman who could give 12-15 quality minutes a night at the 4 or 5 spot.

I think he’ll get taken as a late-first rounder because I think most contenders (heat, spurs, bulls, pacers, clippers) could use cheap front-court depth and that he could contribute in his rookie year at a reasonable level.

And his upside is that if he has no back problems for the rest of his life, he could give Tyler Hansborough type output, which would be very good value in the 25-30 draft range.

I think I might slot him to OKC with their 2nd 1st round pick. He would be perfect for the Nick Collison role and give them some potential scoring from the post if he can get healthy. He was looking like a late lottery pick after last year tournament run and OKC likes to take players that slide down the draft board.

I think it is an absolute JOKE he was banned for an entire year.. the NCAA could have possibly just ruined a kids entire career, and jeopardized his future. i really hope he stays at the university of michigan for educational reasons to finish his degree, because now he will probably need it.  this really makes me hate the NCAA, especially after this football unionization thing.

if U of M were allowed to deal with this, he would have been suspended for maybe 2 games.

As far as his draft status, he will probably go late first to early second. the back injury is worrysome, but the kid has a ton of talent. i think he has the ability to start someday, but he will definitely need to work on his defense.

What happened with his suspension? I heard it was marijuana and he was suspended for a year. But that doesn’t make sense to me. I specifically remember past players testing positive for weed and getting like 1 game suspensions. Klay Thompson comes to mind.

Basically, if McGary had been tested by Michigan during the season or the Big 10 during their tourney, than the suspension would be up to them. This would’ve led to the type of punishment usually associated with a first time positive test. But, since the NCAA caught him, it’s an automatic 1 year suspension.

I have him as a late first round pick. I don’t think the back comes into play much at that point. I think he is a potential pick. Think he could help right away as an energy big but you risk the guarantee because he could be a good player down the road. I have him at the Heat pick right now.

I think he has a shot to be a good player. I would say that his upside is higher than a 15 mpg backup though.

the sixers have 5 second round picks and if they keep them he is the type of player that I would love to take a shot with.

I don think he is a first rounder anymore. Not because of the weed, but because of the back problems. People talk about Embiid as having a scary back situation, but McGary actually required surgery which is a whole different level.

One thing that doesnt show up on the stat sheet about Mcgary is his feel for the game. He is o e of the best passers 6’8 and up in this draft, has soft hands, coordinated feet, and good touch. There is a very limited amount of big men capable of passing well in the NBA. That skill will keep players like Mcroberts and Diaw in NBA lineups for years.

I see Mcgary in play from 26 with the Heat to 37 with the Raptors.

Exactly. Mcgary has a great feel for the game and good basketball I.Q. He makes excellent passes especially those big-big hockey assists.

This may sound lazy or too cliche but he does remind me of David Lee somehow. Lefty with a nice mid-range stroke while also being able to use his off-hand, capable ball-handler of the high post or perimeter good rebounder and plays with high energy and motor.

I also think he has a chance of ending up like Lee in terms of being drafted low(29th) but was able to carve out a niche in the nba with opportunity. I’m telling you, coaches would love to have Mcgary on their team given his intangibles. I highly doubt he would be relegated as a bench warmer in this league.

I think Mcgary will become a better pro than Hansbrough.  After a sparking college career which including 4 first team all-americas, national player of the year his junior year and becoming Carolina’s all-time leading scorer, he has basically dropped off the map in  the NBA being relegated to the bench with the Raptors.  He had average athleticism but just outworked and outcompeted everyone in college which was amazing to watch.  Once he got to the league he didn’t have any one thing he did well and couldnt bully opponents in the paint like he could in college.  I think Mcgary is more skilled than Hansbrough and will have a much better pro career.
